Mar 18, 2010I have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).

Dec 3, 2008I have ubuntu-8.04.1-server installed on virtual machine. It works perfect. Now, I made copy of this virtual machine. I started that copied machine and it works fine, except one thing: network does not work!
I have several others VMs with freeBSD, openBSD or Windows on it, but only ubuntu machine hes network problem after coping. I tried some other VM with ubuntu on it - same problem! I downloaded VM with ubuntu - same problem.I take a look into /etc/network/interfaces file and it looks just as it should (same as before coping) but ifconfig command returns parameters for lo only (before coping there was eth0 and lo).

Bothf them are configured for static IPs. The trouble is that when machine B goes offline or hits a kernel panic, machine 1 goes offline too. Ubuntu :: Restore A TAR Backup To Virtual Machine?
Apr 9, 2011I'm trying to use this tutorial (URL...) to backup my Ubuntu 10.10 (ext3) operating system. I've successfully gotten it into a TAR file on my external hard-drive, but inside the archive are 2 folders: sda5 and media (/media/sda5/), sda5 ofcourse containing my operating system.
I run VMWare as my virtual machine software, but I could easily run Virtual Box if the situation calls for it. On my virtual machine I created an Extended partition, made a 2GB swap space and the rest is ext3 (ext3 space is mounted as sda1) (at this point, Swap is OFF) here is what I've tried to do inside the virtual machine to restore:

mount /dev/sdb1 /media/FROM/

but instead it just creates the directory sda5 under media of the live ubuntu cd Do I need to CHRoot in these conditions? AFTER I get the files successfully into the virtual machine, how do I go about restoring the grub2 bootloader? Right now I haven't tried to restore grub on my hardware, but I would be interested in doing so. There are a vast immense amount of forum posts about this subject, but all are to mixed results. Can anybody tell me the absolute definite way to restore grub2 successfully, I don't want to try something if it's going to mess up my install, whether I've backed up or not.

I scp stuff from my mac to it quite a lot over my local wireless network.At the moment, it holds a .sparsebundle backup of my mac created by SuperDuper! (mac backup application) that I periodically transfer over. I'd like to make this system a little more sophisticated and use Apple's Time Machine to automatically backup to my Ubuntu box if possible.

Connect Machine (desktop) To Server To SSH Into Box And Backup Some Files
Feb 7, 2010I have an old pc currently running ubuntu server 9.10. It was configured during install to connect to the home wifi router by a PCI ethernet card, which worked all well and good. However, at the moment I cannot connect to the router (I have moved the machine too far from it). I want to connect this machine (desktop) to the server so I can SSH into the box and backup some files. I need help creating a simple wired network connection between the two, as I have no clue as to where to start.

Jan 27, 2011I have two desktop machines, each with U 10.10. I want to backup data on my main machine to a partition on the other machine. I am going to use luckybackup for that. Problem is, from the main machine, I cannot access the backup partition on the other machine (but I can see it). I get prompts for passwords and when I enter them nothing happens, it seems they're not valid. Bottom line, I can't access that partition.

Oct 12, 2010I'm wanting to setup a file server for home. I'll probably use the following: Ebox, Firefly Media Server, TorrentFlux I'm still not sure about how to go about redundancy for the store, possibly software RAID 5. ZFS would be cool but the linux support through FUSE and large memory requirements are a bit of turn-off. I'm also not sure how to go about supporting TimeMachine on my new Macbook Pro. I've seen a couple of old guides on the web discussing Netatalk and Avahi but noting new.
I'm thinking I'll probably use a spare 2.5" 80GB SATA drive for the OS drive, and then probably 4x2TB HDD (for 6TB of useable storage in RAID 5). I'm not sure about what mobo and cpu to use yet. I was originally thinking to go with an atom based Mini-ITX mobo but to get one with 4x SATA ports is hard enough, let alone trying to get one with 5-6x (1 for OS and 4 for data) so I'm thinking maybe I should get a low power Intel or AMD based Micro-ATX mobo with 6x SATA. I'm also thinking I'll setup CrashPlan for online backup from the server (plus directly from my Macbook Pro and my Desktop).

OpenSUSE Network :: Network 11.3 - Connection Refused When Try To Connect To SSH From Another Machine
Sep 27, 2010I installed OpenSuSE 11.3. The only "extra" package I put in after the install was VirtualBox-ose. The firewall is disabled. I gave the machine a static IP address. I can get to the Internet from the machine. I enabled sshd to start on boot with "chkconfig sshd on" and also verified the service is running on the machine. I can ssh user@localhost from the machine as well.
When I try to connect to SSH from another machine, I get a connection refused. I verify that the firewall is down. I also try to get to VNC -- same problem: Connection refused. I ping the machine for fun. If I try to SSH again, it sometimes gives me a logon? I would check the server logs for the connection refused, but I wouldn't know where to look. I started in /var/log/messages, but nothing seemed to jump out there. I also find it strange because I can RDP to a windows guest running under VirtualBox. The Windows guest uses Bridged Network and DHCP.
I also find it interesting that I sometimes type a "ping google.com" from the 11.3 box and it will just hang - no output. Then I open firefox and get to the internet. All of a sudden, ping starts to give output. Could this be a neetwork card issue? A configuration issue? I don't know where to start.

Sep 28, 2010Recently loaded 11.3 onto a virtual machine, however none of the network settings will allow me to connect to the internet. First time Ive had this happen, other distro's Ive experimented with connected with no problems. I recall seeing a similar topic some time ago (dont remember if it was here or another forum), but at the time, there had been no fix. Anyone know if this has been fixed?

It would be great if it had the option to only backup changed/new files instead of copying files it has already backed up.
Right now I'm looking at Bacula, the Open Source, Enterprise ready, Network Backup Tool for Linux, Unix, and Windows. I'll see what I come with on that.
I do not have an external drive large enough drive to backup my HD. I will continue my searching but so far, I haven't found anything very good.

Apr 27, 2011I am currently trying to figure out what's the best way to backup several PCs (about 5 computers each with Windows 7) from my family.
As I want the same solution for all Computer - I set up my old computer (Windows 7) and added some hard drives and there should now be enough space to backup the data of everyone from my family via the network. (Lets call this computer "Server")
But now I am wondering whats the best way to do this? What I do not want:
I do not want to start the Server each time manually when a computer tries to backup. (I thought about using WakeOnLan.. but I do not know if this is a good idea) I do not want the Server to run permanently I do not want to make the backups manually they should backup about every week automatically.
So which Software on the Computers / or the "Server" would you recommend?
Or would you eve recommend me to use Linux on the Server? If so, which Software would you use then?
