OpenSUSE Network :: Backup / Clone Of Server In Case It Goes Down
Apr 20, 2010
The place I work has a web/dns server on opensuse 10 up and running hosting a few websites (our company one & a few vhost ones). The box was set up before I got here. Now we are wanting to create a new 11.2 server that is basically a backup / clone of 1st server in case it goes down.

We have a ldap server which has been running for a couple years now, and I was told to make a fallback / backup ldap server. So should the old one fail we won't be officially screwed.

I have a file server running in an office that's mostly used for file sharing and a scanner saves pdf files to the server. I'm running the latest LTS ubuntu server edition and I really only have ssh installed and samba. My question is that I've done so much to the server as far as premissions and configuration and I'd like to make a clone of this to another computer and not sure how I would do this?
I'm not sure if clonezilla or something like this can perform this task? I basically just have a very old computer and now I have another very old computer that I want to make into a spare just incase something happens to the original. Any recommedations on how I would accomplish this?

I am new Ubuntu. I have a new Dell Mini10 running that I have configured and running. I want to clone or backup the system at it's current state. I have been looking at the options and Clonezilla seems to be recommended often. Are there other choices that are easer or better? My real goal is to make a bootable DVD that will restore my system back to the point it was cloned.

I'm looking for software that can backup all the files in my /home directory including hidden files.
I liked Lucky Backup, but it puts everything in a tar file, meaning that the backup fails if the file gets too large (4 GB I think). I would prefer to avoid using tar/archives anyway, as often I only need to recover 1 file from a backup (an archive holding my 50 Gb of data would take ages to open).
Does anyone know of a program or a way to get rsync or the like to copy all the files in a directory, including hidden files, into another directory ( so I end up with effectively a carbon copy of the original). Disk space is not an issue so I don't need to compress anything. I'm not bothered whether its a fancy GUI-based program or a rsync command, just so long as it can save my previous files from.... myself.

I have been researching the web for a program which will allow me to backup my entire hard drive so that I can restore my system if need be. I am however unsure which is the best one to use if I want to achieve this:Somehow I want to back up my hard drive containing my ubuntu system byte for byte so that if the hard drive were to fail I could simply go to the store, get a new hard drive, restore my backup and be up and running again without having to do any re installments of ubuntu or any other programs for that matter.
What is the easiest program that does this? I would like it to support incremental backup.rsync with the "Back in Time interface"?bacula?

Kernel 2.6, Slackware 12.0
mkisofs 2.01
I do 'mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt'. Only an example. When I mount image, ls outputs john_smi.txt. So it has shorten to 8.3 and translated ' ' into '_'. This is in accordance with the manual, although it doesn't say the conversion will be done.
Quote:
-iso-level level
.........................
With all iso9660 levels from 1..3, all filenames are restricted to upper case letters, numbers and the underscore (_).
...........................
However, as it did not reject the file name, it should have converted it to all upper case, it seems to me. And -iso-level 2|3 does the same thing.
Code:
root@darkstar:~# mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt
Total translation table size: 0
Total rockridge attributes bytes: 0
Total directory bytes: 0

This should be a quick one. I'm trying to backup a single directory and it's subdirectories on my Lucid Server to a freenas box across my network. This is what I'm using to do that..
rsync -r -a -v -z * --delete freenas:dSIBackups It almost works perfectly except for one problem. When a file is deleted at the source, this command doesn't seem to delete it on the receiving end. I assumed that the --delete would do that but aparently not. Can anyone think of a reason that this would happen?

I want to clone an SGI IRIX hard drive over the network. The hardware is ancient, no usb, and the CD rom is shot, its scsi and Im worried I wont be able to get it to boot a live cd.
if I run dd on a running computer, what consequences might there be?
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda | gzip -1 - | ssh user@hostname dd of=image.gz
where /dev/sda is the local IRIX computer and of=image.gz is a free partition else where.

I do have one question about the latest Ubuntu server edition 9.10. Currently I am using 8.04 on a server at home and have nothing but great things to say about it.
With that being said, what would be the use case for an average joe like me to harness the new capabilities in 9.10, more specifically in regards to the new EC2 features?
I am a web designer and video geek...I was wondering if this would take some of the workload off my Macs. For example video rendering, etc. Should I uprgrade and try this out?

Does anyone know of any decent enterprise level backup solutions for Linux? I need to backup a few servers and a bunch of desktops onto one backup server. Using rsync/tar.gz won't cut it. I need like bi-monthly full HDD backups, and things such as that, with a nice GUI interface to add/remove systems from the backup list. I need basically something similar to CommVault or Veritas. Veritas I've used before but it has its issues, such as leaving 30GB cache files. CommVault, I have no idea how much it is, and if it supports backing up to a hard drive rather than tape.

It can tell me 'trying nth attempt at www.website.com'

I installed opensuse 11.2 64-bit edition. I installed all of the software I wanted.I now want to clone the installation to 6 other workstations that are 100% identical to the first.I used clonezilla to create the image, but all of the new workstations will not boot. This is due to the fact of the fstab being 100% cloned and other boot volume problems.Does anyone know of a good, easy way to clone opensuse 11.2 that will work?
