Applications :: Backup Over A Network ?
Sep 18, 2010
After several years of loosing data over stupid things, I have decided to start backing up my hard drive. Does anyone know of an app I could use to backup a Linux system to another network computer?
It would be great if it had the option to only backup changed/new files instead of copying files it has already backed up.
Right now I'm looking at Bacula, the Open Source, Enterprise ready, Network Backup Tool for Linux, Unix, and Windows. I'll see what I come with on that.
I do not have an external drive large enough drive to backup my HD. I will continue my searching but so far, I haven't found anything very good.

Does anybody know any programs that might facilitate the spanning of a hard drive over multiple DVDs? I would like to backup a windows system that may have become corrupted however; but I don't know how to automatically span the files over multiple DVDs (which is what I'd like to do.) I may or may not use Ubuntu, but does anyone know any good applications for this?

I have searched and searched for answers to this question, but I can't find what I'm searching for anywhere. At least with the search terms I'm using.So, my question is, is there a backup software for Linux that backs up not only a user's home folder, etc, but also the user's applications, and its associated data.
I am about to upgrade my mother's computer to Lucid, but I don't want to do that until I can find a backup solution that will ensure she doesn't lose any of her application data. She has a lot of apps on her netbook, so just finding out where each individual app stores its data and backing it up is kind of out of the question. Unless every app that the end-user uses (that isn't run as root, obviously) stores its data in the home folder, then it would be easier.Honestly, I use a Mac and I guess I'm just used to the simplicity of Time Machine, which certainly backs up applications, application data, user data, and even extra executables in all the /bin folders (which Macs don't typically use to store most applications). I've heard TimeVault is like Time Machine, but when I tried to use it on her computer, it wouldn't work because it wasn't compatible with the version of Ubuntu that was (and still is) on her computer.

I'm having a bit of a problem with drives connected by NFS and KDE4.4.4. The setup is that a server running oS11.2 and KDE4.4.4 gives access to it's shared drives via NFS to two laptops (one with 11.2 the other with 11.3, both running kde4.4.4) and a desktop PC (running oS11.3 KDE4.4.4). The clients have no problems accessing the shared drive on the server via NFS. The problem comes when the network goes down or the connection to the network is lost.
Any applications open at the time that are 'looking' at the shared drive just hang forcing me to kill the application. Dolphin is a classic example. Even after the network comes back up Dolphin will not start properly and just opens a blank window. Starting dolphin from a console reveals nothing and the console just drops back to the command line with no output. Logging out and back in doesn't help so it's something at system level.My question is how can I make this more robust and allow the system recover gracefully and without taking down the applications when the network is lost?

I have several machines that I'd like to backup various folders through the linux box onto DVD-RW media.I want to keep log files of what was written and when to dvd on one machine and have it automagically assign a unique serial number that I can print on the dvd in case I need to recover.I'd like a user friendly UI that I can point and click to schedule the backup and it's type.Is there a good Fedora backup application (read easy to use/understand and configure) I can use to backup machines across a network and across multiple dvd's (if needed)? The host machine is a F11 box.These are a mix of Win server 2008, win 7, win XP and several Fedora boxes.Speaking of dvd media is this a good idea and how many erase/write cycles are they good for?

Is it possible to route different applications through different network interfaces?
Let's say (hypothetically) I want to route /usr/bin/thunderbird through vlan0 but /usr/bin/firefox through eth0.
Is there a way? And if so, is there a graphical tool for it as well?

I'm looking for a tool to control network bandwidth (per application i.e. totem), something like trickle (a userspace bandwidth shaper).Trickle is a bit outdated, latest ver. 1.0.6 (2003), and it won't compile under -current. There's a slackbuild available, dated 2004.
Quote:
$ make
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -Wall -Icompat -g -O2 -c trickle.c

I am currently trying to figure out what's the best way to backup several PCs (about 5 computers each with Windows 7) from my family.
As I want the same solution for all Computer - I set up my old computer (Windows 7) and added some hard drives and there should now be enough space to backup the data of everyone from my family via the network. (Lets call this computer "Server")
But now I am wondering whats the best way to do this? What I do not want:
I do not want to start the Server each time manually when a computer tries to backup. (I thought about using WakeOnLan.. but I do not know if this is a good idea) I do not want the Server to run permanently I do not want to make the backups manually they should backup about every week automatically.
So which Software on the Computers / or the "Server" would you recommend?
Or would you eve recommend me to use Linux on the Server? If so, which Software would you use then?

I have recently moved countries and have finally got my internet connected today after a lengthy wait. I have a pretty fast connection - it's a fibre connection at approx 100Mbps Between my onu (modem) & computer (Lenovo SL510) I have a cisco wrt120N wireless router. I'm using Opensuse 11.3 (also dual boot with Win7)
My problem is . . . When I enter url in firefox (4) I get the message "looking up www. . ." for approx 5 to 15 seconds before anything starts to load. I also have the same behaviour in konqueror, firefox and yast software manager.
If I use Google Chrome the pages load instantly. Even never before visited pages.
A typical webpage such as Stuff.co.nz - Latest New Zealand News & World News, Sports News & NZ Weather Forecasts takes approx 20 to thirty secs to load in firefox and 3 seconds in Chrome. I can see the same behaviour always whether Chrome used first or firefox used first - so cache does not appear to be the issue.
If I boot into Win7 - websites load instantly there also.
I have updated to the latest wireless drivers for my system - but the behaviour is also evident if I attach a lan cable.
Here is a little info
Code:
/sbin/ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 60:EB:69:AE:C6:28
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

This should be a quick one. I'm trying to backup a single directory and it's subdirectories on my Lucid Server to a freenas box across my network. This is what I'm using to do that..
rsync -r -a -v -z * --delete freenas:dSIBackups It almost works perfectly except for one problem. When a file is deleted at the source, this command doesn't seem to delete it on the receiving end. I assumed that the --delete would do that but aparently not. Can anyone think of a reason that this would happen?

After I spent some time discovering The BIG BANG of Universe and The Meaning of Life :
I managed somehow to create a script to make some backup of files on server and TAR it and then FTP the archive to another location FTP server and then emails result.
It also measures time needed to complete it and deletes archive older than XX days (set in find -mtime +20) and makes incremental backup every weekday and FULL on Sundays (which suits me bcoz no heavy load).
Files for TAR to include and exclude are in txt files listed each line separate name:
file: including.txt:

This script simply deletes files older than a certain age (in this case 7 days) from a certain location; I use it to purge old backups nightly, and it works as expected:
# delete backups older than 7 days
find /mnt/backup/* -mtime +7 -exec rm -Rf {} ;
The problem is, every morning I get an email with an error message something like this:
find: `/mnt/backup/subfolder': No such file or directory

I have a scheduled backup to run on our server at work and since the 7/12/09 it has be making 592k files instead of 10Mb files, In mysql-admin (the GUI tool) I have a stored connection for the user 'backup', the user has select and lock rights on the databases being backed up. I have a backup profile called 'backup_regular' and in the third tab along its scheduled to backup at 2 in the morning every week day. If I look at one of the small backup files generated I see the following:
Code:
-- MySQL Administrator dump 1.4
--
-- ------------------------------------------------------
-- Server version`
[code]....
It seems that MySQL can open and write to the file fine, it just can't dump

I've tried to google but not much luck. What I would like to do is have anumber of folders on my desktop and their contents, replicated/duplicated into another folder on the same PC in real time. So for example, if I were to change an OpenOffice document in a specific folder on my Desktop it would be replicated/duplicated in real time. If I had three folders on my Desktop A, B and C they would also appear/be backed up (in real time) in a folder called /home/backup. Can this be done?
