Fedora Servers :: Network Backup To DVD-RW

Oct 7, 2010

I have several machines that I'd like to backup various folders through the linux box onto DVD-RW media.I want to keep log files of what was written and when to dvd on one machine and have it automagically assign a unique serial number that I can print on the dvd in case I need to recover.I'd like a user friendly UI that I can point and click to schedule the backup and it's type.Is there a good Fedora backup application (read easy to use/understand and configure) I can use to backup machines across a network and across multiple dvd's (if needed)? The host machine is a F11 box. These are a mix of Win server 2008, win 7, win XP and several Fedora boxes.Speaking of dvd media is this a good idea and how many erase/write cycles are they good for?

Ubuntu Servers :: Mysql-admin Won't Schedule Backup But Will Manual Backup

Jan 19, 2010

I have a scheduled backup to run on our server at work and since the 7/12/09 it has be making 592k files instead of 10Mb files, In mysql-admin (the GUI tool) I have a stored connection for the user 'backup', the user has select and lock rights on the databases being backed up. I have a backup profile called 'backup_regular' and in the third tab along its scheduled to backup at 2 in the morning every week day. If I look at one of the small backup files generated I see the following:

Code:

-- MySQL Administrator dump 1.4
--
-- ------------------------------------------------------
-- Server version`

[code]....

It seems that MySQL can open and write to the file fine, it just can't dump

Software :: Backup A Few Servers And A Bunch Of Desktops Onto One Backup Server?

May 10, 2010

Does anyone know of any decent enterprise level backup solutions for Linux? I need to backup a few servers and a bunch of desktops onto one backup server. Using rsync/tar.gz won't cut it. I need like bi-monthly full HDD backups, and things such as that, with a nice GUI interface to add/remove systems from the backup list. I need basically something similar to CommVault or Veritas. Veritas I've used before but it has its issues, such as leaving 30GB cache files. CommVault, I have no idea how much it is, and if it supports backing up to a hard drive rather than tape.

Fedora Servers :: Tar Backup Of Webserver On FC10?

Jan 27, 2009

I want to backup my apache website using tar. I want to make sure all the permissions and such stay the same so that if I restore a website, it's ready to go exactly as it had been.I am using the following command and would like to know if there is anything else I should neeed to do?

tar --xattrs cvzf backup.tgz /path-to-webserver-files

Now my other question is since tar doesn't store absolute paths, when I run the restore I have to be in the root directory? In another words if I run the command in a user directory will tar do something retarded like encode the paths as ../path-to-webserver or will it just be path-to-webserver so that when I run the restore from the / folder it will automatically go into the right place?

How do I do that? I create an image file an iso file? or what? How?

I want to do this incase my server burns up over there. I don't want to reinstall all the programs and do the set ups manually again.

Fedora Servers :: Crontab Backup Job Works / But Gives Chown / Chgrp Errors

Jul 3, 2010

As root, I use crontab to run mirrordir to backup directories. Everything gets copied over properly, but owner information isn't preserved and root is the owner of all the backed up files. I can deal with that, but crontab reports tons and tons of chown/chgrp errors for mirrordir every time I do back ups--which is every day--and the multiple emails to root of thousands of chown/chgrp errors is very annoying. The error is "Operation not permitted," but that doesn't make sense to me because the job runs as root (right?) and clearly the job is permitted to create the backup files, so why would it fail to chown and chgrp?

I've had the exact same setup on another server for years, and crontab has always run mirrordir without error. Any suggestions how to clear the errors on my new server?

Ubuntu Servers :: Backup Multiple Servers ?

Jan 19, 2010

I currently have a group of 3 servers connected to a local network. One is a web server, one is a mysql server, the other used for a specific function on my site (calculation of soccer matches!).

Anyway, I have been working on the site a lot lately but it is tedious connecting my USB hard drive to each computer and copying the files. This means I am not backing up as often as I should...

I have a laptop connected to this same network that I use for development so I can SSH into to the computers, is there any software for ubuntu that can take backups of files that I choose on multiple computers? I know I could rsync but is there something with more or an GUI?

Then I can just every 2 days move the most recent backup from my laptop to the USB drive. Then I will have the backup stored in 2 places if things go kaboom somewhere.

Fedora Servers :: Mounting A Nfs Network Partition?

Mar 11, 2010

I am having trouble mounting a nfs network partition. I think my problem is related to the firewall in my server.

1. - When the firewall is disable in the server, all the clients are able to mount the network partition without a problem. This is good, but I want the firewall active.

2.- When the firewall enabled, without any port opened, none of the clients are able to connect to the server (expected behavior). This is the message I got:

mount -t nfs 192.168.1.103:/home/username /mnt/myHomeCaraota/
mount: mount to NFS server '192.168.1.103' failed: System Error: No route to host.

3.- When I open port 2049 only (see lines below) Nothing changed. I got the same message. No connetion

-A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 2049 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m udp -p udp --dport 2049 -j ACCEPT

4.- If I open ,additionally, ports tcp/udp 111 thre is an improvement because at least I get:

usename@laptop ~]$ sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.1.103:/home/username /mnt/myHomeCaraota/
mount: mount to NFS server '192.168.1.103' failed: timed out (retrying).
mount: mount to NFS server '192.168.1.103' failed: timed out (retrying).
mount: mount to NFS server '192.168.1.103' failed: timed out (retrying).

[Code]...

But in the last case I am opening everything to the clients (192.168.1.100-192.168.1.104) and I believe it is not a good use of the firewall. In summary, I think my nfs configuration is o.k, because I am able to mount the partitions when the firewall is down or when all the ports are open for a given number of clients. I also believe that I need to open ports 111 and 2049 because at leas the server is responding, but I know that I need something else, but I can not figure out what that is.

Ubuntu Servers :: Set Up A Backup Of The Windows 7 Pc?

May 16, 2010

I have been hassling with this for several days now. I have 64-bit Ubuntu Server 10.04 running on an Acer Aspire EasyStore H340. I have windows 7 running on a 64-bit desktop pc and on a laptop. I mainly wanted to use the Ubuntu server for a file server, so I installed Samba and created three shares. These do show up in Windows explorer, and I can read and write to them. My windows applications seem to be able to see the shares and open & save files.

My next step was to try and set up a backup of the Windows 7 pc to the Ubuntu server. Windows integrated backup sees the shares and sub-directories within the shares, and the initial part of the backup seems to run OK, but when it tries to save an image of the 'C:" drive it works for a long time and then ends with an error (cannot complete backup).

So, I looked for some free backup programs to try, but these do not allow me to select the shares as a destination (invalid destination). The dialogue sees the drives I have mapped the shares to in Windows, but does not show any sub-directories, and selecting the mapped drive letter does not take as a destination. If I try to browse down through "Network" in the destination dialogue, it selects "Network," but does not expand it or accept it as a destination.

So, I partitioned, formatted as ext3, and mounted my 2nd 1TB SATA drive on the server, and mounted it as "storage." I set this up as share in Samba and gave everyone read-write access, but still no luck selecting it for a backup destination. After some Googling, I downloaded and installed Ext2Fsd-0.48 (a windows 'driver' for Ext2/Ext3). This installed correctly, but when I open the program, neither "Network," the shares, or the mapped drives show up anywhere.

Server :: Production Servers HD Backup

Feb 24, 2010

I administer several web hosting (combined with mail relays and other services) production servers under Debian GNU/Linux. I began giving these public services two years ago via three boxes: the first is a gateway which controls traffic via iptables (it's attached to a DSL modem) between a public subnet (the DMZ) and a local network which connects several workstations. In the DMZ subnet I maintain two Pentium-III era boxes, they've grown in services since I set them up. Actually, I think I should buy new ones, but, you know, I want to save money and lenghten its life.

So, they've grown in data hosted, but I've never implemented a resilent backup system. I've set up some rsync tasks sheduled via cron jobs to copy the entire UNIX file system in each of the DMZ boxes, but I'd like to be prepared before an unexpected "real" crash of some HDD, I mean, some problem that renders a disk unusable.

AFAIK, sysadmins sync entire HD backups which are capable of recovering a system via swapping the unusable unit with the backup unit. Maybe the best fashion is to implement a RAID mirroring the unit, I'm I right? So, keeping my systems as they are, I mean, capable of using 4 parallel ATA units, what would you do? Use dump, rsync or some other way to have an operational second unit with an exact copy in a bootable second drive, in order to quickly swap it if the main unit fails?

Comes to my mind to partition a second unit (so making it bootable) and backup daily via rsync only those parts of the unix file system hierarchy which are necessary to boot a system properly. What do you think about this workaround?

Fedora Servers :: Apache Will Not Serve Beyond Local Network

Jan 6, 2009

I've tried, but now I give up. I'm trying to run Apache on FC9. Nothing fancy, no extras, just the default installed apache. [correction, I have coldfusion installed, however the service is not running] I've set the Listen variable to every combination I could think of, with no success. I can set it whatever I like (such as my local IP) on any port other than port 80. If I try to set it to 192.168.x.x:80, it gives me the error message:
Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 192.168.x.x:80

I've run netstat commands to try and find applications listening on port 80 and found nothing. Whenever I chose a port other than 80 to get the service to start successfully, I am able to serve pages locally. But even with my ports forwarded correctly, no one outside the local network can see it. I've checked with nmap that my machine is opening the ports and even cheated, disabling the firewall during testing to ensure it was not part of the problem.

I noticed while locally nmaping my server that whenever I set Listen 192.168.x.x:8081, 8081 is opened, as well as normal port 80. When I stop the httpd service, both those ports are simultaneously closed. Why is httpd opening port 80? I'm assuming this is related to why I cannot assign Listen to port 80. If I run remote scans from sites like www.nmap-online.com and www.canyouseeme.org, nmap-online will report filtered on ports 80 and 8081 if my httpd is running, and if httpd stopped, 80 is closed, filtered 8081.

Can you seem reports success on ports 80 and 8081 if httpd is running, fail if httpd is stopped. I'm sure thats all a lot of information cluttered in to all that. To summarize, I cannot start my httpd server on port 80, and I cannot ever see my webpages beyond my local network. Am I missing something extremely is simple and I'm just over looking it?

Fedora Servers :: Sendmail And Home Network Woes?

Feb 22, 2011

I have a rather interesting issue. I have set up a home network and a fedora 14 box as a server. I am running the version of Sendmail that came with fedora 14. I wrote a PHP script that changes http access passwords(to give authorized access to the outside by multiple users) once a week and emails the users their new passwords. It also finds out my WAN IP (because it is dynamic, and I am using a Linksys router with NAT), and E-Mails users when this has changed along with the new access password. I have Sendmail set up so that it should log on to my websites mail server (smtp.example.net) and send the email through it.

The problem I am having is that I have set up my home server with an internal domain like exampledomain.home, but the wan IP reverse lookup returns xx.xxx.xxx.xxx.static.xxx.xx.charter.com, so that when my sendmail server connects to my smtp server for my website it gives "EHLO server.exampledomain.home" then my smtp server rejects it because the connecting IP (WAN IP) resolves toxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.static.opls.la.charter.com gives a host not found error. Or it gives the error because server.exampledomain.home is obviously not a valid host name on the internet. I was hoping someone out there had some insight on how I could get around this without editing or adding any DNS entries to my websites domain. I would also like to avoid getting a static IP for my house as it is more expensive. I thought about making a dynamic DNS entry with dyndns.com and then making Sendmail use that host name. I dont know how to trick sendmail like that though. Here is a copy of my sendmail.mc (scrubbed of course).
