Hardware :: Area Marked "/" Not Accessible By Tablets Cursor
Aug 4, 2010
I recently got an Aiptek Hyperpen Mini. Now I am trying to get it to run under SuSE. The Tablet was sold as "Aiptek Hyperpen Mini". Linux correctly identifies it however as a Waltop Tablet (waltop sells it under the name QPad). It is much closer related to wacom then to aiptek, to the point that waltop offers linux drivers and tools which are mostly identical to the wacom tools. In short: This "Aiptek" uses the wacom driver. At least on a kernel level. I have managed to get the tablet to be recognized and installed correctly. wacdump shows the available data correctly (x/y/pressure/buttons). What doesn't work is X. I am trying to use the tablet in a 2 Monitor environment (screen 1 leftof 0). As long as I treat the tablet as a USB/HID, it acts like a mouse (two buttons, no pressure). Since I need the pressure, I have declared it as a wacom tablet like so:
[code]...
The Area marked "/" is not accessible by the tablets cursor. When entering into it from the left (on Screen0), the cursor jumps to the left screen's white area. Equally, when entering the "/"'d area from the right (on Screen1), the cursor jumps back into the right screen's white area. Somehow the wacom's coordinates get mapped to the screen in a really weird manner. I have tried all combinations of TwinView, MMonitor and ScreenNo with no avail. ScreenNo "0" keeps the cursor on screen 0, but again: only on the right half. Does anyone have a solution for this?

I am thinking of getting a graphics tablet for my Fedora box, probably a Wacom Intuos4 or a Bamboo Pen and Touch. I'm looking at those models simply because they seem to be the most popular ones out there. Before I buy I want to know if they work with Fedora 13. The company seems to officially support only Windows and Mac. It is easy to find the drivers and install them? What graphics software do they work with? I've never had a graphics tablet before.

A few weeks ago, I was configuring my wacom tablet with the Wacom Control Panel by QB89Dragon, and suddenly xorg crashed. I remember specifically that I was modifying the pressure curve of the pen when it crashed. The screen went black, but the computer stayed on. Since then, every time I start up ubuntu normally, it would show the splash screen, but would then drop me to a black screen. But if I boot up under recovery mode, failsafeX, and generate a new x configuration, and restart X, it will work fine until I restart.
I've tried looking for an xorg.conf, but since I'm running 10.04, I guess it doesn't use an xorg.conf anymore. I tried uninstalling the program I used to configure it, but no go. I tried generating a new configuration with the tablet unplugged, with the tablet plugged in, even with a different tablet. And, since nothing is ever that simple when I do something wrong, nothing so far has worked.

Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.

Am running Ubuntu NBR as the sole OS on my Dell Mini 9. Switched over in March to 9.10 NBR. Everything worked fine.Upgraded to 10.04 when it was released. It's awesome EXCEPT for this busy cursor thing. As soon as I log in, all the time my cursor is the spinning wheel of busyness.... It works just as a normal cursor would - my computer also does not seem to be slower due to any operations. If I open an application, the cursor will behave as usual within the window but if I more my cursor to the title bar or switch out of the application, the "busy cursor" resumes.

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.4 and having problems reinstalling an app I used to use routinely on 9.10 using wine 1.2 - Is there way round this? I tried installing from USB hard drive and CD and just get this: I don't know whether it is a wine or OS issue. The file '/media/Data disc (23 Jun 10)/macromedia8/Fireworks8-en.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. I want to run minecraft, but when clicking Minecraft.jar it wont cuz of Ubuntu's policy crap. Is there a way to turn this off, because this is worse than Windows UAC. If not, using Java SDK 6, how can I run it? I'm assuming it's a terminal command since wine lets you get around the restrictions with a sudo wine command.

when I have updated my ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, many PPA have been disabled & I can't use them right now. I have checked about them in the repositiries & they are marked as diabled since updated to naty(11.04)...
So my question is, can I enable these repositiries(PPA) ?? Is it safe to re enable them or not ?? if not... what should I do now ?? I have many PPA that have been diabled, such as: rhythmbox,wine,weupd8 team ... much more...
I hope there is a soulution with that, since each time I upgrade my computer to the new version I'm facing this issue..

So I'm following the online tutorials I've found to install sketchup, and I've run into a snag right off the bat. The instructions I've found say to open the Sketchup exe file by right clicking and selecting open with Wine I do this and I get a box stating that the file is not marked as an executable. How do I fix that? Step by step instructions would be best since I only just installed ubuntu for the first time two days ago

"The file '/home/Downloads/Firefox Setup 5.0.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied from an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit."
I looked into this, but I don't understand what I'm doing well enough to assign file permission to this program.

I did a clean install of 11.04 this morning. Upon logging in, Update Manager appeared, telling me there were 67 packages to upgrade. I obliged, and the update progress window appeared, as usual. At this point I realized it was not a convenient time to install the updates. No progress had yet been made; Update Manager had not downloaded anything, the progress bar had not moved, and the status was "waiting". I canceled the update and closed Update manager. However, upon running it again, it thinks that it successfully installed all the packages. In the "Ubuntu Software Center" Update history, it shows all those packages as having been updated with a timestamp of when I canceled the update. Apt-get and aptitude will not update the packages either. It seems like the packages have been marked as updated even though no update was installed. How can I rectify this problem and get the package managers to actually install the updates?

I found this really cool guide / info about creating an internet portal where users have to register (their MAC) with the server to use the internet. basically if users MAC's are in the list they get routed to the internet if not they get routed to an internal page asking them to register. It works great and works well. I was wondering if there are some smart people out there who could help me reverse the process.. eg if your mac is not in the list you can access the internet if it is, you are redirected to an internal page saying "youve been blocked"
The firewall rules are as follows.
Code: IPTABLES=/sbin/iptables
# Create internet chain
# This is used to authenticate users who have already signed up
$IPTABLES -N internet -t nat
# First send all traffic via newly created internet chain
[Code]...

I have just bought a new computer and I want to partition it to be dual booting as I have done a few times in the past.
Currently (alternatively, see attached screenshot):
There are three partitions:
/dev/sda1: FAT16 DellUtility (takes very little space and is of no concern)
/dev/sda2: ntfs RECOVERY (takes up 17.58GB and is marked boot)
/dev/sda3: ntfs OS (the rest of the computer, on which windows is currently installed)
[Code].....
it is safe to delete the current boot partition. I am also not quite clear on when the recovery partition would be used and whether it is really all that necessary (18GB doing nothing seems like a lot to me). Should I make a system recovery media for windows before repartitioning? Also, I am not sure which type of ext partition to use. Finally, I am not sure how big to make the swap space. I think I recall the normal rule being twice the RAM (6GB RAM in my case), but 12GB swap space seems like a lot. Although I do sometimes run memory intensive programs (simulations for research). I normally use other computers for such simulations since they have far more RAM than my computer can possibly have even with a large swap space.

I have been having problems hibernating my windows 7 partition recently. It happened approximately right after I set up the dual boot.
I have found other topics where it says to make sure that the windows 7 partition is marked as the active partition. I have since done so and it has not changed anything. I did it with Partition Magic on Windows. I did find it suspicious though that my Dell Recovery partition is labeled as boot while the Windows one is marked as Active and System.
However when I looked at it using disk utility in Ubuntu the windows 7 partition is marked as Bootable while the recovery partition is not.
Hibernation works on Ubuntu with a couple error messages while shutting down and some weird screen issues while booting up. But it ends up working decently.
Under Disk Utility the Ubuntu Partition is not marked as Bootable. Should it be?

When I move files from Windows to Linux using a USB drive, all files are marked as executable. Then double clicking on a ".txt" file gets you the ridiculous dialog box asking whether you want to display the file or execute it. (NOTE: The /etc/fstab entry for the USB mount includes the "noexec" option already and it hasn't helped.) Now that my wife and daughters are moving files back and forth between the two OSs, I'm getting pestered for a solution to this and I haven't been able to track anything down. Yet.
What can one do -- presumably on the Windows side of the transfer -- to prevent these files from being marked executable? Or is it a hopeless problem caused by some dainbread decision made by a Windows developer?
