Hardware :: 3d Won't Initialize With Radeon 5470 And Debian Lenny With Custom Kernel

May 13, 2010

I recently got a new dell studio 1558 with radeon hd 5470 video card. So far have had lot of small problems and such but been able to fix the via google and a lil luck but now I'm stumped with this one and decided to try and turn here for some possible help. Now on to the details.

Distro - Debian lenny with 2.6.33.3 custom kernel propriatory lgrfx 10.4 drivers installed direct from ati (installed no problem)after compiling the kernel and installing the drivers from ATI my card IS recognized and X will boot up with the proper resolution, but that's where all the problems start. I can no longer switch to virtual terminals (ctrl-alt-F1,F2,F3,F4 etc) and graphics performance in X is extremely poor due to the fact that 3D fails to initialize, and catalyst control fails to load (it tries to but then just disappears)

Debian Configuration :: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 Non-free Driver Installation?

Jun 6, 2011

1- I'm trying to install the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 driver over the non-free repository ...the problem is that until now i didn't found a recent documentation ...and to be honest i don't know which procedure should i use to rightly install the driver .

2- I have two graphic cards (integrated Intel with the i5 processor), and i can't change the default one to the ati! because debian had set the intel card as a native one...! that's why i´ m wondering if just an installation of the non-free drivers will solve this or not! I think every body will ask me how the lspci output looks like so here is it : 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 02) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor PCI Express x16 Root Port (rev 02) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset HECI Controller (rev 06) 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset USB2 Enhanced Host Controller (rev 05)00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)

Debian Hardware :: Poor 2d Performance Lenny Radeon 9600 Firmware?

Jun 15, 2010

i had recently loaded squeeze and had an issue with the 2d performance.i.e when being prompted for the root password, the shading slowly draws down the screen several times before stopping at the final darker shade. i then added the linux-firmware-nonfree package. all worked extremely well, even compiz, but i don't really care about compiz. i just loaded it to see how it performed. i then distro-hopped a bit and when i came back to squeeze the first thing i did was add the package, but the video is acting like i haven't added the package. i've searched for an answer, but have not found anything recent to indicate if xorg was upgraded or what.stable lenny works fine, but i'd rather have the nice console fonts when not in x and more up to date apps like gimp and xsane in squeeze.

Debian Hardware :: Video Card - Failed To Initialize NVidia Kernel Module

Aug 9, 2011

I am trying to get my Debian system running. I have an older Dell Precision 490 with two dual core CPUs. It has 16G Ram, an 150G Intel solid state drive, a 230G data drive, and a 600G backup drive. I have two Samsung monitors attached to the NVIDIA Geforce FX 5xx card. I have been using this machine for several years with Etch, then Lenny, running KDE 3.5. I recently needed to upgrade to Squeeze and KDE4 and have had nothing but problems since. I keep having issues with the video drivers, every time I touch anything the drivers seem to upgrade from the legacy 173 to the current 195.

There have been other library compatibility issues as well (gclib) and the machine has not been stable. This morning the system was running very slowly with X running at 100% (from top) and then the entire system froze. After a hard reboot, X did restart. The Xorg.0.log has the following message:
"Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly..."

At this moment, no fglrx packages are installed.

System is Toshiba laptop.

I do not think ATI dropped support, however, even without fglrx, nothing works.

2) Are the kernel sources from Debian and www.kernel.org the same?
3) If I want to download the kernel source manually, where do I get it from?

Debian Configuration :: Install Custom Kernel Image

Mar 11, 2016

I've a problem running jessie on a XEN supervisor; my running kernel and the installed kernel image differ, because the host system forces the kernel at boot time. Current loaded kernel is

Code:
Select all$ uname -r
3.18.12

But I'm not able to install this version from the standard repository.

Code:
Select all# apt-cache search linux-image
linux-headers-3.16.0-4-amd64 - Header-Dateien für Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 - Linux 3.16 für 64-Bit-PCs
linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64-dbg - Debugging symbols for Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-amd64 - Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)
linux-image-amd64-dbg - Debugging symbols for Linux amd64 configuration (meta-package)
nvidia-kernel-3.16.0-4-amd64 - NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 - Linux 2.6.32 for 64-bit PCs, Xen dom0 support

Now I'm facing issues loading kernel modules for iptables, because the module path does not exist. Is there an easy way to install a proper kernel image from the standard repositories?

Debian Configuration :: Compile Custom Kernel Without Debugging Symbols

Aug 3, 2010

I've compiled 2.6.35 for my eeepc, but I have noticed that resulting .deb file is 30mb large. After investigating i saw that modules (and maybe kernel) are compiled with debugging symbols enabled.I've checked my lenny router and modules there are without debugging symbols. So stock 2.6.26 from lenny comes without debugging symbols and linux-image .deb file is around 20mb.Stock 2.6.32-5-686 from squeeze comes with debugging symbols enabled - linux-image .deb here is 26mb. (I have used 2.6.32's .config file to build my kernel, then i did make oldconfig.)I guess this is what increase my kernel size, but how to disable it?Or maybe enable stripping of debugging symbols.

Debian Configuration :: Slow Custom Kernel Build Amd64

Aug 17, 2011

I used make-kpkg to build the 3.0.0 source debian wheezy on a dual 3.4GHz Xeon/L1-16k/L2-1mb/800Mhz bus with 4GB PC2-3200 ECC ram and Ultra 320 SCSI, using CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=4 (2 hyperthreading cpus=4 cores). The build was slower than molasses in January! Top reported cpu usage total between 10% and 25%. Why won't the build use the amount of machine it has available. One footnote: I wasn't using swap space. It literally took over an hour to build the deb kernel package.

My notebook from 2003 is at least three times faster building the 3.0.0 debian kernel source. Is it possible that this might cause improvement: make -j4 KDEB_PKGVERSION=version deb-pkg

over

CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=4 make-kpkg --initrd --revision=123x kernel_image?

Could amd64 vs. i386 have some influence? Could the small processor caches on the XEON cpus have an effect. The 64-bit machine absolutely flies doing everything else. I'm miffed! I've used debian since woody, although I am not an expert, but I'm no slouch!

Debian Hardware :: Lenny/squeeze 64bit Kernel Panic On >4gb Ram?

Apr 27, 2010

i recently buy an MSI 770-45 motherboard with 4gb (2x2gb) Gskill 1600Mhz Ram. The CPU is an athlon2 x4 620, everything tested and working fine except i can`t get lenny or squeeze 64bit linux running because of kernel panics when creating ext3/ext4 partitions during install or running fsck on the system i installed on another PC and moved to this one. The boot shows a screen related to IOMMU problem saying must enable it in bios but no option related to it and no memory remapping also. The question is how i can get IOEMMU working with 4gb of RAM (if i remove one of the two modules everything is fine). I`ve tryed ioemmu=memapper/off/noagp/soft and any thing i found on the web, moving to test debian installation was my last hope really before starting to use the 32bit one, i am planning to add more RAM which with this version is just can`t be.

i'm trying to get my WLan working, i do have a Broadcom BCM4312 lpphy WLan-Adapter (pci-id according to lspci -vnn is 14e4:4315) in my Lenove ideapad S12. My System is Debian Lenny, but in order for the WLan-Adapter to work I installed the 2.6.32-3-686 Kernel from debian squeeze (using apt-pinning). I than installed the b43-firmware as described in the debian wiki [URL]. I updated the init-ramfs, everything is working as expected, except for WLan.

It shows up using iwconfig, i can get it up and down using ifconfig (or ifup, ifdown). I can't do a scan using iwlist - it says: % iwlist wlan0 scan > Failed to read scan data : Resource temporarily unavailable

It always fails, but not with the same error message. Sometimes it also comes up with > device or resource busy

Using dmesg I see reports about a fatal DMA error, resulting in a controller RESET. It says it's loading firmware 478.104 .

Debian Configuration :: Change The Driver File And Compile Custom Kernel

May 3, 2011

When I only change a driver file manually, for example /newkernel/linux-source-.6.32/drivers/gpu/drm/i915_drv.h, do I need to run "make config" or similar like "make menuconfig" or can I just skip? I mean these steps:

1.) apt-get install linux-source-2.6.32
2.) mkdir ~/newkernel/
3.) cp /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.32.tar.bz2 ~/newkernel/
4.) cd /newkernel/
5.) tar xjf linux-source-2.6.32.tar.bz2
6.) cd linux-source-2.6.32
7.) cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) ./.config yes "" | make oldconfig
8.) change the driver file /newkernel/linux-source-2.6.32/drivers/gpu/drm/i915_drv.h manually
8.) make-kpkg clean
9.) make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --initrd --revision=custom.001 kernel_image kernel_headers
10.) dpkg -i *.deb

Is this way OK or do I miss something?
