I just wanted to know if i download Debian Squeeze linux-source-2.6.32 from packages.debian.org and try and compile it in debian lenny using lenny's packages will the build succeed ?

But the old version lacks MSN offline message and sametime protocol support and the yahoo protocol doesn't work at all. Does anyone successful in compiling bitlbee and libpurple in lenny 32bit?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had this PCMCIA USB 2.0 card that worked in Lenny when I put this laptop into my closet in late 2009. I brought it back out a few weeks ago and put a fresh install of Squeeze on it, and it does not recognize the card. dmesg says something about "ignoring the device" (sorry, I don't have the machine in front of me).
Laptop in question is a Toshiba Tecra 8000. The PCMCIA card... has no brand on it whatsoever. I thought I had the box somewhere, but I have been unable to find it.
Was wondering if I can upgrade my kernel to squeeze without affecting or hurting my Lenny system?
I want to upgrade the kernel, but leave the system as stable lenny

Have my proxy running on Lenny and tried to upgrade to squeeze. Originally the system was installed on Etch and upgrading to Lenny was no problem. In the system i have two RAID1 volumes, md0 for / and md1 for /home. For upgrading i added the sources to my apt.conf and startet dist-upgrade. During the installation procedure, when installing udev I was advised to install the new kernel first and continue upgrade after booting the kernel. so I installed the kernel by "apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686. When generating initramfs there was a message, that there are no arrays defined in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf I took a look and there were none. mdadm seems to have been update before.
I then added the lines for RAID definition and added the data for UUID The UUID I got from the output of "mdadm --detail /dev/md0"
What I don't understand: blkid gives the same UUIDs for the first partitions of the RAID and a different UUID for /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 than mdadm --detail The update of initramfs for kernel 2.6.32 then gives this result:

i recently buy an MSI 770-45 motherboard with 4gb (2x2gb) Gskill 1600Mhz Ram. The CPU is an athlon2 x4 620, everything tested and working fine except i can`t get lenny or squeeze 64bit linux running because of kernel panics when creating ext3/ext4 partitions during install or running fsck on the system i installed on another PC and moved to this one. The boot shows a screen related to IOMMU problem saying must enable it in bios but no option related to it and no memory remapping also. The question is how i can get IOEMMU working with 4gb of RAM (if i remove one of the two modules everything is fine). I`ve tryed ioemmu=memapper/off/noagp/soft and any thing i found on the web, moving to test debian installation was my last hope really before starting to use the 32bit one, i am planning to add more RAM which with this version is just can`t be.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to get my WLan working, i do have a Broadcom BCM4312 lpphy WLan-Adapter (pci-id according to lspci -vnn is 14e4:4315) in my Lenove ideapad S12. My System is Debian Lenny, but in order for the WLan-Adapter to work I installed the 2.6.32-3-686 Kernel from debian squeeze (using apt-pinning). I than installed the b43-firmware as described in the debian wiki [URL]. I updated the init-ramfs, everything is working as expected, except for WLan.
It shows up using iwconfig, i can get it up and down using ifconfig (or ifup, ifdown). I can't do a scan using iwlist - it says: % iwlist wlan0 scan > Failed to read scan data : Resource temporarily unavailable
It always fails, but not with the same error message. Sometimes it also comes up with > device or resource busy
Using dmesg I see reports about a fatal DMA error, resulting in a controller RESET. It says it's loading firmware 478.104 .
Compiling latest compat-wireless on up to date squeeze install I get this:

I'm in need of a bit of assistance from you Debian users. I have two servers that I thought were identical installations, both running Debian Lenny. Tonight I started the upgrade to Squeeze on both servers and one of them went smooth. The other one started out good but fails on the postconfiguration of openssh-server. I'm getting the following message:

It looks like there's an error in one of the files in openssh-server that prohibits it from installing correctly. However on the other server it all went well.
So I completely fail at making a kernel x86_64, used to make them fine for just x86 but I haven't a clue on how to make them specifically for 64-bit systems.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Lenny kernel version 2.6.26-2-686.I am trying to install some drivers and they need kernel source. I installed kernel source through Synaptic, but the driver installer doesn't find it at the place it expects.
1) Where does Lenny keep the kernel source?
2) Are the kernel sources from Debian and www.kernel.org the same?
3) If I want to download the kernel source manually, where do I get it from?
I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)
is it save to install linux kernel 2.6.35.2 on Debian Lenny 5.0.5 or stick with automatic updates...
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am not able to use the touchpad, etc. on my laptop because the hardware is not supported until kernel 4.5. (This was confirmed by installing fedora-rawhide with 4.5: all the hardware problems were cleared up.) So I tried to compile a 4.5 kernel and install that in a testing version of Debian, but the hardware is still not working.
What I tried: copied the kernel boot config from the testing installation to the directory where the kernel was to be compiled, in order to keep the configuration of the current system. After compiling the kernel the first time I thought that perhaps the issue was that the right options for the new i2c-based hardware had not been selected in menuconfig and were not the default in the kernel config, so I compiled the kernel again, selecting the necessary hardware to be installed (and not as a module). But after the second (and third) kernel compiles the hardware still does not function (appears not to exist).
This is the first few times I've tried to compile a kernel, so I may be missing something obvious. After the second compile, I was wondering how to tell if the right kernel was in use, but grub only saw one 4.5 kernel (besides the original one) and I don't know where to look to see if the kernel has the different --revision=xyz it was assigned when running fakeroot make-kpkg. I was also wondering if it is possible to add the missing hardware by compiling the modules separately and adding them as boot options.
I installed Debian Squeeze from a net install to a raid 1 array. I have been having a lot of troubles related to being able to write to one or more of the mounted drives - even touch gives me errors.

I found a thread that indicated that this bug was fixed in the next kernel version: 2.6.32-6. I am willing to upgrade the kernel to get rid of my problems. Is a squeeze kernel at 2.6.32-6 or higher available? If so, where? I have not compiled my own kernel, and am not very interested in getting into that.
downgrade my squeeze installation to kernel 2.6.32-29 (I think I have -30 now).
- what is the proper way to downgrade to that version of the kernel (I got my current kernel version when I installed squeeze few days ago and the official repo does not seem to have the -29 version anymore)?
- how to prevent that future automatic updates "upgrade" me again to the non-working version?
Laptop Amilo L1300, installed Debian Squeeze from netinstall from scratch a month ago. Installed Xfce as a DE afterwards.
This laptop usually has problem with: ACPI, Wifi and tons of other stuff usually Kernel related and is really picky about kernel version!
Now - with Lenny it worked without problems, but it had gnome and ext3 so I took a gamble and did a fresh install of Squeeze with Xfce with Ext4 filesystem and overall performance of the computer was faster and more responsive.

It all worked 100% until a week ago (roughly).
I do not use synaptic nor update manager, so I updated the system via terminal (as root of course) "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade". And I noticed it will upgrade kernel. I went through the upgrade process, as I thought it's all a 2.6.32-5-686 kernel version and it will not brake anything since it IS a stable branch of Debian and it will not install new kernel. Of course it did not install 2.6.34 or anything like that...
After the update I began experiencing problems, first with mouse pointer, it became invisible and goes back visible and resume from suspend, also wireless randomly disconnects and sometimes won't reconnect to wifi network, as I found out it's all kernel related problems (googled it up). I do not know how to go back to previous kernel version, since in Grub2 menu it only points to one and only kernel version, as I reckon it's the same version but with bugfixes? Or should I say buy UNfixes. I tried using a liquorix kernel 2.6.32 but as he works, has problem with ACPI as I presume since it freezes the system on random occasions.
Please, what EXACT version of kernel was in Squeeze like 3 weeks ago? And how can install that particular version of kernel, since it was the only one that worked besides the one from Lenny.

I have squeeze with Gnome and 2.6.32-5-686 kernel. Due to problems with graphics card (kernel bugs), I'd like to update the kernel. The problem is, 2.6.32-5-686 seems to be at the moment last kernel for squeeze.Is it any way to update just a kernel and stay with squeeze or I must upgrade squeeze to the testing (wheezy)?

I've got a fresh install of Squeeze on a 32bit host and I have been unable to boot into XEN/dom0.The Xen Kernel is "linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-686" (pvops) and Hypervisor is xen-hypervisor-4.0-i386.The system default installed with grub2.It boots quite happily in normal mode, using the above Kernel, but just reboots itself if I try run it as Xen/dom0. (reboots within a second of pressing <enter> ... there is no messages displayed on the screen that I have noticed)The relevant menu (generated by /etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen) entry for running Xen is as below;

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed 2.6.38 from backports. It boots OK, and among the start-up messages it says it has started kdm, but then it offers only a console login prompt, no GUI. I assumed (perhaps optimistically?) that newer kernels would be backward-compatible, and that any dependencies on other software would be enforced by the package mechanisms. Running amd64, Squeeze, KDE.

i'm using this guide videos - howto: debian linux kernel compilation, part 1 and the author says i need kernel 2.6.26 this version of kernel doesnt longer exist in kernel.org website and the only 2.6.26 i found is a patch here. should i use the patch? or download another version of kernel?

It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? I am currently running Debian Lenny on one of my external HDDs and Debian Squeeze on the other one. I found a package I like in lenny but it seems it has not been added to squeeze (yet). The package is ksirc and i like it because it looks and feels like mIRC that I used in windows. My question is can I install the lenny version on squeeze with out it having an adverse effect? My other question is what do I put into the /etc/apt/sources.list to do this? i now see that ksirc is also available in a sid (unstable) version. Is it safe to install this one to my squeeze distro? and again what do I need to add to my sources.list to do this?
Or could I just download the deb package and install it using dpkg? New to this and just looking for the best way to get a favorite software package.
I run into a problem when trying to update from lenny to squeeze. Seems that util-linux fails to install due to some error and that this causes xorg as well as udev to fail. If this is the case then it might be a bug in the post-installation script for util-linux..Am I on the right track or is it completely wrong?
