I would like to setup a remote desktop for my Ubuntu computer so I can use my computer on a Windows computer that is on a different network. How can I do this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI may have to work in another state for some time, and I'd like to access my home machine desktop remotely, like this: Server - home machine, oS 11.4 64-bit, KDE 4.7, 1920 x 1200 screen (currently set to 24-bit color depth), 1 Mbps upload speed, behind a Dlink DL-524 router I manage.
Client: laptop, oS 11.4 64-bit, KDE 4.6.5, 1280 x 800 screen (also 24-bit color depth), unknown up/down speed - probably huge at work, crappy at apart hotel. I'd like to keep the server resolution, if possible, even if the client's is smaller. I want to be able to star/stop KDE apps in the server, move files between folders, and fix the issues that only happen when my wife is at the keyboard (it's a machine conspiracy, she says ). So I'd need to connect to the server's current session/user (which is myself, i.e., same login/password).
What do you recommend for this? I've read Swerdna's tutorial for 11.2/11.2 (a million seen malcomlewis xrdp 0.6 packages for 11.4 (you rock, malcomlewis!), as well as this thread: RDP into OpenSUSE 11.2, however most seem concerned with rdp between windows and linux boxes. Is there something better/faster/simpler for oS-to-oS RDP or should I use xrdp all the same?
I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it
I was wondering what the best way to secure RD would be? What's the best one to use? I'd prefer a method that isn't always active, so maybe something that I need to enable via ssh first?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a VPS by my host running on a linux server, and they have given me SSH access. Is it possible to remote desktop into the server, like you can on Windows, so that I can physcially click on things rather than having to use SSH commands?
Surely this must be running on Fedora or Ubuntu etc. so there is some type of OS. You would probably have to install something on the servers end I suppose but just want to know if its possible and what the options are.
I have been reading up around the internet that although it is possible to use MSTSC.exe under Windows XP to connect back to a Suse machine running XRDP (I believe).I had been working fine with Suse 11.0 until today. I had not made any changes to my local network but now whenever I try to connect in, I am told that I can not start the session as the sesman logon fails!
I tail'ed /var/log/messages but there is nothing written to that log when I try (interestingly enough, I do get the logon prompt that requests username, password and session type - I usually select KDE3 but have tried all options - and get the error after clicking OK).
My questions:-
1. Is XRDP under 11.1 any better (more stable as when it worked, I use to get kicked out a lot under 11.0)
2. What log file should I be trying to tail so I can see what is happening?
I must use Linux as the back end, I don't want to use a hacked copy of XP anymore and don't want to pay �� for a real version when Linux is free and should by now be able to grant me access to my network from a remote location!VNC is not an option as I will be wanting to log on more than one user at the same time.

For the purposes of this guide I will use a Desktop as the Server (Host) which is at home. The Client will be a Laptop that I can use to control the Desktop remotely. First you should already be familiar with the Terminal which is where you enter commands (anything in a "Code:" box).
In Ubuntu it is in Applications > Accessories > Terminal In Kubuntu it is usually on the lower left taskbar and is called Konsole I am using Ubuntu so you may have to make some adjustments to this guide if you are not using Ubuntu. I need to securely control my home computer from work. My home computer is connected to the internet via a wireless router using Tomato. I'm using the latest Ubuntu on both ends. Is the Remote Desktop that's installed by default good enough? What settings do I need for my home router to safely allow my remote connections and not leave it open to intruders?

The trick is that I just want to have a remote session without having any local screen sharing. I have a remote desktop session to a Windows 7 Workstation that keeps timingut/disconnecting after a minute or two of idiling. Also, sometimes it disconnects while I am in the middle of using it.I have tried turing off all NIC power saving options, the sound option for remote desktop, and all the go to sleep power saving options. I don't have any issues with remote desktop connecting to various Windows Server 2008 R2 Machines and VMs.

Also, the personal wiki I set up on it to be viewed via a normal web browser cannot be accessed, either. Both time out when attempting to connect to them. I can still ping the Debian machine when on the same network, though.
This started some time ago when we had a failure occur on our main server.had to powercycle everything in order to restore things back to normal, the Debian machine included. Since that time, this problem started to occur. This is a major thorn in my side in attempting to prepare for our website to move,I've been unable to figure out how to fix it.Originally, I thought it would be something in between the Debian machine and anything else, which would mean something like our firewall box or our hardware switch was the problem. But the tech support people who maintain those for us confirm that there is nothing wrong with them, so now I'm not certain anymore.
I have a Win7 deskptop (host) and want to run a linux virtual machine; but I want that linux virtual machine to be able to access a directory on the host machine (in this case, to serve a web directory).

I want to use a headless (no monitor) and armless (no keyboard/mouse) PC as a Linux box that I can remotely access from my other machines. That is I want to make it look like I'm sitting at the console on the Linux box with a monitor/keyboard/mouse.
I've tried that via the instructions at [URL]
but, the moment I disconnect the monitor and reboot, the remote desktop connection fails as apparently X fails to start for lack of a "screen". Removing the keyboard/mouse does not seem to be a problem.
Is there a workaround?

I have recently installed fedora 14 and configured vpn to access my work network. I need to access some windows machines which although I can ping I cannot remote desktop into. When I go to Applications>Internet> Remote Desktop Viewer and put in the machine name (either just the machine name or the FQDN including the domain name) I get an error "Connection to <machinename> was closed".

I can remotely bring up CUPS and print a test page, but I would like to be able to add a printer in windows like I normally would. Add printer, network work printer and so on, but I am not sure how to implement this on Ubuntu server. Do I need to use IPP or do I have to share it out using Samba? Oh, my server does not have a graphical desktop, it is strictly console based.
