Problem: After restarting DNS decided that on of 2 existing HDD (in Standard, not in RAID, etc.) is new and asked to format it.
DNS indicated problem HDD by Purple LED instead of Blue LED.
What I tried to do:
- re-started device few times (thru web interface and pressing 'button')
- insert this HDD in the place of another (working good) one - the same result
How to get under linux (without Wine) such information about Windows EXE/DLL file:
CompanyName
FileVersion
ProductVersion

In linux we can make it output bootstrap instructions,
what about windows?
Back in the old days of PC-DOS 3.1, computers are much simpler than today's. I can learn a lot of how File System works with tools like PCTools, Norton Disk Doctor, and [URL]. Have been working exclusive in corporate database application area for over a decade, my knowledge of how these stuff work is diminishing. Standard-clean OS (Windows, Linux) installation is all I can do now. And it starts to cause me many data-loss troubles, when I have to perform something that I don't have much insight, such as install and remove peer linux os or move and resize partitions.
I'm looking for books, web resources, or communities where I can educate myself on how various file system works, for which I can have in-depth answer to questions such as:
How to remove ubuntu and grub2 ? (I recently did that, but with a lot of frustration when I was not really sure what I was doing and confront with some scary error message like "Missing BootMgr" What kind of disk-partitioning operation can be performed non-destructively, and why ? What is Active partition ? Primary Parition ? Extended Partition ? How it stored on the disk. There are many free partitioning tools out there, which one is safe to used ? NTFS, Ext3, Ext4, .. What the differences ? How to choose it wisely.
I am using virtualbox to run windows xp.is there a way to access the harddisk occupied by linux and copy the information to the virtual memory in windows xp

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently built a small Intel Atom 330 based server for my home. I'm using the Vortexbox Fedora-based OS to run the server (primarily used as a media server). So far everything is working great. In addition to my media server, I've got a DLink DNS-321 NAS. I would like to setup a scheduled, incremental backup of my main server to the DLink NAS. I understand rsync is an excellent option, and am willing to undertake the task of setting it up on my server, but I am uncertain how to make it all happen with the DLink NAS. The NAS is very barebones, and I don't know if I can even install rsync on it. I don't even know if I can get to any kind of command line on the NAS box. 1. Can I mount the NAS drive on my main Linux server and then just run rsync on the server?

I use the cube as mainly a workspace switcher but it would be nice to know how to enable the other effects without breakage , a guide would be nice and I realize Unity in 11.04 is new so it may take time before a guide/ work arounds will be posted.

had 9.10 and had truble with this usb wirerless dongle but was able to fix with some help from the formes so now with the fresh install the wireless maneger sees my network and says its conected but no lights on dongle and web pages wont come up

I have a desktop running Ubuntu 10, a D-Link DIR 320 router which allows my laptop and desktop to share printers/internet. I can get my Canon MP250 to print directly from Ubuntu via USB, and it works wireless from laptop, but I don't know how to get it printing via the usb port connected to the router. Documentation suggests I use 192.168.0.1 but just can't figure out what needs to happen to make the darn thing connect!

ifcfg-wlan0 is set for DHCP. Notice above no IP. If ifcfg is given an IP/mask still no IP. So it seems to be up and running, just not accessible.
I've just recently installed opensuse after being an ubuntu user for about a year. For some reason I can't connect to my Dlink router, but I can connect to my neighbors linksys router. To be more specific it actually connects but acts as if the DNS isn't working. I can ping the router, but can't ping anything past the router. Right now the router is unsecured.

I have tried all of the suggestions I have come across, some simple, some complex. Nothing works. At home in Guangzhou, I have no problem connecting to a WPA-secured wireless router.Now I'm on vacation in another city trying to use a dLink DI-624 router. If I connect immediately after reboot, no problem. If I suspend the session and then wake the machine up again, it will try to connect and then tell me WPA authentication failed.This happens both with network manager and wicd.sysinfo says the network controller is an Atheros AR9285 (ethernet is Realtek RTL8101E/8102E, probably not relevant).Since everything works correctly with routers other than the dLink, I'd have to guess it's not a general wireless configuration problem, nor a wireless card malfunction. Maybe some bad handshaking that manifests only after waking from sleep?More out of curiosity -- I'll only be here for a few weeks and a wired connection is readily available. But, say I end up in a hotel somewhere that uses dLink for WiFi

When using wireless i can't even connect to any online messaging service and I need to reload pages oftenly. My security setting is WEP 128 bits ASCII and since I'm trying to follow the format suggested on the thread "HOWTO post a Wireless issue" I'll try to provide the infos like requested on it. Does anyone have experience with the D-LINK DIR-655 gateway OR router OR wireless access point? On the surface, I like this box, but it is giving me grief. First, it wants me to use a win-dose CD configurator application. I use the embedded web page configurator. Next, there are several configuration wizards at the embedded web page. After trying the wizards, I went to the manual screens to tinker to get something working.
So what is going on? When a LAN client connects, I want DHCP to present at least two "nameserver" values ... which then make their way into /etc/resolv.conf The DIR-655 plays some nameserver games like caching and blacklisting and other things. However, I get some ad-vert page from "dnssearch" or "yahoo" or similar when names don't resolve. I really don't want this behavior. Network-manager does not report the connection down, however streaming anything stops or "reconnects", browsing times out, LAN side traffic seems to stop as well.
I have a dual-boot windows and Suse linux 11.1 setup. I can save and restore a linux image. Trying to save an image of Windows results in Partimage freezing at the "NTFS Information" window before the "save partition to image file." I have two SystemRescue CDs of versions 1.2.2 and 1.2.3 I have two computers one with Windows 2000 and one with Windows XP I have defragmented the partitions several times over. Users are told that use with "NTFS is experimantal". Several up-beat webpage tutorials also mention this but go on to say how marvellous it works for them. Naturally, such sites do not mention problems. This is the province of the forums. I have found nothing that relates to my problem though. Hence my post appealing for any guidance on offer.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I view a file in Linux with the 'less' command, I often only get a ":" prompt in the bottom left corner. There's no clue about how long the file will be, or at which location I am currently. When reading manpages with 'man', there's a file title and line number in that corner. And once I hit the end of the file, there's even a percentage shown. I've learned about 'less -m' but it's not that powerful. So what does 'man' differently from 'less'? They appear to be the same viewing programme, except for that file information difference.
