Have been working exclusive in corporate database application area for over a decade, my knowledge of how these stuff work is diminishing. Standard-clean OS (Windows, Linux) installation is all I can do now. And it starts to cause me many data-loss troubles, when I have to perform something that I don't have much insight, such as install and remove peer linux os or move and resize partitions.
I'm looking for books, web resources, or communities where I can educate myself on how various file system works, for which I can have in-depth answer to questions such as:
How to remove ubuntu and grub2 ? (I recently did that, but with a lot of frustration when I was not really sure what I was doing and confront with some scary error message like "Missing BootMgr" What kind of disk-partitioning operation can be performed non-destructively, and why ? What is Active partition ? Primary Parition ? Extended Partition ? How it stored on the disk. There are many free partitioning tools out there, which one is safe to used ? NTFS, Ext3, Ext4, .. What the differences ? How to choose it wisely.

Ubuntu :: Wrong Monitor Resolution At Bootstrap
Sep 3, 2010Sometimes, randomly, when turning on my Ubuntu laptop (HP 6730b, Ubuntu 10.04) I get a wrong monitor setting (much lower resolution than normal) and it is not possible to set it correctly because the menu buttons are wrongly placed and some are not present (probably there is not enough room for them) I have no other way than to restart the system to get the right resolution. Can someone tell me this inexplicable (to me) behaviour? Of course I didn't change anything in monitor settings...

May 24, 2011I have successfully created an iso of my current running system using live build with the --bootstrap copy option..As expected, the image is gigantic. I would like to be able to use live-build to create copy-of-host iso's, but with specific options to -exclude specific pathways (ie. music folders, picture folders etc). Is there a way to do this? I did run a configuration and build using an option similar to that found in tar (something like -exclude=/home/user/music) and it ran through without any apparent errors, however, there was not any iso image to be found.

Feb 28, 2010I have two machines on a local area network (xp box and xubuntu box) and I want audio from both machines to be played from the same set of speakers. The problem is, the xubuntu machine doesn't have any sound output. There is no onboard sound card and all expansion slots are pci-x, so short of buying a pci-x sound card my only option for playing sound is to route audio through LAN to my xp computer.
I already have a program that will let me play music on one computer from another's speakers, but I am trying to set up a stream so that games and internet sound can be heard. Is it possible for me to do this?

May 2, 2011I have changed my Compiz profile to enable the cube in unity and I'm worried about using anything beyond the basic cube. I have not found any information about using 3d windows or other cube effects , so I was wondering if anyone was doing this with Unity ?
I use the cube as mainly a workspace switcher but it would be nice to know how to enable the other effects without breakage , a guide would be nice and I realize Unity in 11.04 is new so it may take time before a guide/ work arounds will be posted.

Any ides how to make it work?
EDIT: I tried the suggested approach to add a new file to /etc/grub.d, which generated an entry in grub.cfg, but it does not appear in the grub menu on boot :(

Although I thought this would be an easy task for a simple window manager like fvwm, I didn't get it to work.
I've tried fvwm in combination with the FvwmPager, but I keep getting problems to place the different windows in the different virtual desk or page (automatically).
e.g. if you do: xterm -title "Hello" and xterm -title "There", I want Hello to go to virtual screen 1 and There to go to virtual screen 2.
I've also tried using metacity and switching between workspaces.
Is there an example configuration available? I'm not fixed on a specific window manager.

Programming :: Bootstrap Not Starting U-boot In The Normal Boot Sequence
Oct 5, 2010I am facing a problem with my AT91SAM9260 customized board. Board is almost same as the evaluation kit.
I could download the binaries ( Bootstrap-v1.16, u-boot-1.3.4, linux kernel 2.6.20) successfully to the DATAFLASH/NANDFlash in my board by using atmel SAM-BA tool with usb/serialport/jlink.
Here I describe the problem.
When I power up the board, boot strap is not jumping to U-boot location, in the normal boot sequence and board stuck with bootstrap.
But when I disconnect/connect the JTAG USB cable ( provided with SAM-BA ICE) , it's jumping to u-boot location and booting the board properly. I'm getting the same error in NAND FLASH also.
I have tried one more test case.I copied bootstrap binary at the flash location, [location which is specified for u-boot binary] instead of U-boot.bin (location: 0x8400 in dataflash), I got continous bootstrap debug messages in my console. [ So can I conclude SDRAM doesn't have any problem? ]

General :: Windows - Make Rsync Case Insensitive
Mar 12, 2011I'm rsync'ing a bunch of files between a Windows and a Linux system. Since not all Windows care about case, some of the files on the Windows system no longer have the same casing as they had on the Linux system. But rsync now treats these files as different and uploads a new copy.
Is it possible to have rsync ignore the case?
