Would a representative from each Linux distro be kind enough to tell me what the command is for installing the Ruby interpreter in their distro? In Gentoo it is "emerge Ruby".
View 4 RepliesI'm the noobiest noob you'll find on here. I'm having trouble getting ruby on rails to work with mysql on redhat. So on their forum I asked how to install the latest "sqlite" database package on linux.They told me to run.Now, I don't think I need "sudo" because I am the root user on my database, and I don't think I can use "apt-get" because I'm using redhat, not ubuntu.
1) Is there a way of running the above command on redhat? (A redhat command for installing things?)
2) How can I be sure I'm using redhat and not some other OS?
I just wanted to install Maya 2010 on Fedora 12 x86_64, but setup alway ends with the following error (right after having started that):

Autodesk recommends Fedora 9 for Maya, but I wanted to give it a try on F12. So before giving up on that one, I've got some questions:
1. What's an ELF interpreter, anyway?
2. Is there any workaround for that problem, or do you have some suggestions on what I might try?
I'm studying Information Technology and doing Linux as part of it. One of the questions in my text book is: Describe three different ways to start a command line interpreter when using the Gnome desktop of openSUSE Linux. I can't for the life of me make sense out of it.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been using rubyripper quite happily on Karmic, now I've moved to Lucid and discovered a bit of an issue. rubyripper will pause for several minutes between tracks with ruby 1.8. If I upgrade to ruby 1.9.1 the gui client won't run due to an issue with libgtk2-ruby not being available for 1.9.1.
The cli version of rubyripper under 1.9.1 is blazingly fast, so that is what I'm using at the moment, but I do prefer the gui.
Anyone have any insight into this? Googling suggests there may be a bug in ruby 1.8.7 that caused the long pauses, but it was supposed to have been fixed in 1.8.7.249 i.e. the default Lucid version.
I have a problem installing mysql ruby gem on 64bit CentOS machine.

There are a few things not working properly. Ruby version manager seems ok but untill i get working with ruby i don't know if it is working properly. One thing that is not there is irb Interactive ruby is not available according the the message i get.
Well i have no idea what readline is but i did everything that is on that webpage referance page [url]. I have got a lot of progress and learned heaps about linux shell and bash terminal. The thing is i need to get this going and have tried feenode but it is very foreign and how it works i do not have a clue. I have got 2 things resolved so far through this forum but using other threads in it. i need to get irb going before i can progress to using ruby on Rails properly.
I am using a Eeepc running ubuntu easy peasy its version 9.04 of ubuntu. I need the whole of rails to work and want to get a handle on using ruby version manager along with the apache stack with mysql/phpmyadmin and am using this as a dummy run for setting up a development system.
Maybe it's just the program i downloaded and maybe something's missing, but when I run ./configure I get the error: ./configure: line 4: ruby: command not found it told me to try cnf configure and it says no such file Is this me, suse or the program I downloaded? Something's wrong here.. Maybe ruby needs installed?

I am attempting to start ruby in interactive mode from the command line. However, when I type ruby at the command line, it simply hangs. I know that I have ruby installed. Any ideas as to how to resolve this problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOK, I've tried to install:Mint 6, 7 XFCE, and 8jolicloudeasypeasyand probably another or two..Oh, I'm installing this on my Acer Aspire One 751h, so I am using a USB key and UltraISO, with the exception of jolicloud, which has its own USB creator, and most recently I tried Mint 6 using UNetBootIn.Anyway, I keep getting the same general error, but with different files... Sometimes its errno5: input/output error, and other times its parts of a file (blah/doowop/dadada/video....) I don't know if its a driver problem or what, but I've seen video, sound, and other random stuff.. each time it gives a different one though.Either way, the main paragraph in the window talks about having a dirty CD, needing to replace my hard drive, or burning a new CD at a slower speed... I've checked the md5sum, and that's not the problem.
I'm wondering if my problem is that I'm creating the USB from one computer, and then trying to install it on the 751h. Another thing that might be causing the problem, but I doubt, is the fact that when I set up the partition, I select "use entire disk". Another question, Does it make a difference if the drive letter changes? On our main computer, the USB is mapped to drive E:, but on the 751h, it shows up as D:. If I have to change it on the 751h, how can I without an OS? when trying to install linux, it wiped out my windows, and I don't feel like re-installing it just to change it in a few minutes.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm excited to try Linux/Ubuntu, but I hate command line - I've tried to use it before with disastrous results, so I'd like to try something that requires the least amount of command line use -- or none at all, if possible. I'm not looking for a Windows-clone per se, just something light that will work well on my netbook, and which is entirely GUI for everything/most things that it needs to do.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI use Debian 6 as my main distro, installed on partition 1 (sda1) on my laptop. After installing a second distro on sda2 everything still worked fine and both distros show up on the boot up screen. After installing a 3rd distro on sda3; suddenly my cursor (in Debian) is frozen and I can't use either the touch-pad or the 'left and right clickers'. It seems unlikely that this would have anything to do with installing another distro but on the other hand it is a bit of a coincidence...or? The cursor works on the 2nd OS. The 3rd has not yet showed up on the boot screen (I want to do a 'update-grub from within Debian)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had setup my system for triple boot with Windows, F10 & Suse. I had the Windows partition and then installed F10 setting up Grub to load the other two. All went fine and was able to choose to boot to Windows which worked. I then installed Suse, choosing the bootloader to be on the partition for Suse. This installed fine and can now choose to boot into Suse which works. F10 still works as expected, but when I choose to boot Windows, I just end up with a Grub command line. I can't see how the Windows partition could have been affected. I can still see all the files in there, but it just wont boot.

This is not really a Linux issue but does anyone know how I can 'repair' this Windows partition without affecting any other partitions. I don't have a Windows install CD. If I boot off FreeDOS, is there a command to repair the 'bootability' of the Windows partition only?
We have the need to install an older Linux distribution (Suse 10) on a brand new laptop. The kernel that comes with Suse 10 doesn't have new enough drivers for the NIC and the drive controller. We've been able to find the source code for the NIC and build a working NIC kernel module however, we can not find the source code for the drive controller outside the kernel tree. Newer kernels see the drive fine; the controller is the Intel ATA_PIIX. Its included in the kernel, the hardware we have it just newer than the version in the old suse 10 kernel supports. I've crawled all over the intel site looking for the code outside the kernel source and have been unable to do so. Is it possible to lift the code from a newer kernel source tree? Is it available for download anywhere?
Edit: (from a comment below) SLED-10-SP2-x86 is the OS. The installation of these systems in an automated process, trying to change the process to include a VM (if we had the memory) or install a different base OS; while doable- can't be done in the time allowed. To get through process development, testing, UAT, staging and deployment takes much longer than the time we have. The old laptop had this same issue and the fix by my predecessor was building the NIC and drive modules by hand. We need to simply update those modules for this new laptop
I recently got an ASUS laptop with a Core i5 processor and an ATI VGA card. I would like to install a fast distro and keep my Win7 installed. [dual boot]. I hate Windows 7 because it boots really slow even on a 64-bit system like mine (they claim it's 60% faster, and it still takes about 2 minutes to boot). So I want a distro that boots really quick (in less than 25 seconds). Also, I need it to have the very latest drivers because my laptop is quite new, and I read that the same VGA card I have already has problems when running under Ubuntu. (Not sure though)
I like programming (Python and Processing), so I did lots of research and figured out that Fedora is pretty good for programmers (it has many programming languages and IDEs already configured in the system..no need to install anything!) + I think it's pretty secure since it is based on RedHat Linux + I read some stuff about Fedora 11 and their promise to boot in less than 20 seconds, donno about 12 though? is it true anyway?
On the other hand, some say that Fedora's package management is not very cool when compared to openSuse's decent package manager and system administration tools...etc. Linux Mint looks very elegant and it can run Ubuntu's packages [I suppose] so it's another possible choice too. CrunchBang is also really attractive and minimal, they say it's also quite lightweight..so that's another possible choice for me too
My questions are:
- Which of the above distros is the fastest when booting? This matters the most for me.
- Which one has better support for the most recent drivers? especially for laptops?
Is there any other distro that boots faster than the above distros (in less than 25 seconds on a Core i5) and still has good hardware support and security? I don't really care for the distro's appearance as long as it does the job.
First off I am new to Linux and fairly new to working in Networking and Server config's. I have been using Windows for years and have been learning Windows Server 2003 as I have a Technet account, I can get any MS software. I would like to learn Linux and use this as my Server environment. My project looks like this: I have a Quad core, 8gb machine. I want to install a distro of Linux (server or desktop) and run Virtual Machines on it.
My perferred way would be to use Virtual Box but I could use VMware products if that was better. I would like to run WS2003, WS2008, Linux Distro and anything else that will run in a VM. I can figure out that part pretty easily. I want the Linux host machine to run all these VM's and access and use them on my MAC remotely. I have done some research on ESXi as well, but I don't think my Hardware is going to support that. My exact PC spec's are:

8gb DDR2
Gigabyte MA770-UD3
2 Velicoraptor Drives
GTX 260

I'm looking for a fast Linux distro to put on a USB key. The goal is to be able to boot in as few seconds as possible, with just enough to mount a hard drive and do some basic operations in there (bash would be enough).
I do need:
x86 and x86_64 support
EXT2/3 and NTFS mounting capabilities (read & write)
Networking support (/etc/network/ config is fine, no need for detection) Bash (another shell would also work, but I would have to modify some of my scripts I would prefer if I didn't to have to build these programs for the selected distro, but that's always an option. I do not need:
X, or any form of GUI
more languages (english is enough)
anything not mentioned
I don't care about the size on the USB key, but the bigger it is, the longer it will take to load. My research pointed me towards these distros, but I not sure which one to choose:

I currently have 10.04 installed as my primary OS. I also have windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha installed. I would like to be able to play around with the 10.10 without any risk of damaging my 10.04 install. However, it seems grub2 control was transfered to 10.10. How do I return control to my original distro?

We are having a lot of trouble with this.
We need a command line version of Linux like ttylinux. Any command line will do with the latest kernel. It should be around 50 megs.
But the problem is, all these small Linux versions are LiveCD or have a compressed file system.
We need a SMALL linux distro, that we can install UNCOMPRESSED (no squashfs etc) on a hard disk.

I have installed fc11 x86_64 on my machine. When I try to install .bin files, it displays 'ld-linux.so.2 bad elf interpreter no such file or directory' error. I have also installed glibc but it didn't fix the problem.
