this is my first post here at LinuxQuestions and to start it off I have a question that may be simple. I will provide as much information that I can to help explain what it is I am trying to accomplish. Information: My server is running CentOS latest version I am booting to GRSEC
My problem is that my phone's IP address changes every 10-30 minutes, and my server is IP whitelisted. So in order for me to login to my server I need to somehow record my Phones IP address into the "/etc/hosts.allow file". Getting the IP of my phone is simple, for this I set up an account at dyndns.org. My phone successfully updates it's ip to the site whenever it changes. For this example I will use "linuxquestions.dyndns.org" In order to get my phones IP I will run a "nslookup" on linuxquestions.dyndns.org every 10 minutes. For this I will set a cron job to run every 10 minutes.

I don't know if the title is a correct description of the problem I have. I registered a domain name in godaddy, created a subdomain name and pointed it to some name servers. After some time, I moved my website so I change the name servers of this subdomain name. But the problem now is it is still pointing to the old name servers. Everytime I visit the website in my computer, I get errors. But I try it in another computer, I works. So I suspect there is something left in my computer that still tells my browser to go for the old name server. I've cleared cache and temporary files of this browser but it still does not change.

I found that Mike Oldfield "Tr3s Lunas" being played backward (from the end to begining) is an addictive, magic music. For this I used alsaplayer. Now I want to record these reversed music, not everyone player is able to play backward, how I can do that?
Now I am using some kind of a mutant ubuntu, say version between 9.10 an 10.04, with gnome desktop and alsa sound system.

I currently have pclinuxos 2007 (updated to kde4). I put on webinars, and like to record them using recordmydesktop. All is working fine by putting a splitter in my speaker out, and feeding it back into my line in. This only works when I have analog loopback not muted. My problem is that pclinuxos is now putting out there 2010 version, and there is no way I can see to un-mute the analog loopback. It does not show up as any options onkmix.... I am going to attach a couple pictures one with my old kmix, and one with the new 2010 version. My question is, how can I get back that analog loopback, or is there another way to get the sound to record from both my speaker and my mic?

I'd like to try transcribing a few of my old vinyl records to my ogg player for the car. But which application to use? Sound Recorder is there in the default install of course, but it doesn't seem to have any kind of level meter in it. I have used audacity in the past, but maybe that's overkill.
The sticky howtos don't seem to mention anything as basic as this question. Which application would you recommend?

I would want to record/edit/save music from the microphone (convert a tape to CD). But. I start audacity, leave everything at default, record the music, and play back. It plays agonisingly slow. I can change the sample rate manually such that it sounds good, but this is just a guess (I could for example measure the recording time, and adjust the sample rate after that, such that the displayed time on the timeline fits this time). Why the hell do I need to do this? Why is the recording sample rate = playbe sample rate not producing correct output?

I would like to record music streams on my computer, coming from the Firefox FLASH plugin, with audacity or something else.In ancient times I had a soundcard that allowed to enable loopback by sw, but my current soundcard (realtec ALC88 doesn't support it. I am looking for a sw based solution to record the sound (not a hw loopback cable). I need a GUI.I tried JACK, but this is horribly complicated, Audacity seems to support it, but does the FLASH player? Anyhow, I never got any sound stream rerouted to audacity through JACK.Isn't there a simple solution that allows to tap the digital audio stream at the output of the Flash player and write it to a file

I have a strange problem with my browser(s), even Epiphany....when I go to my music site [URL] then log in, go to my page and click on link to play a song the browser Crashes. It never did this before and I dont know what I could have done to cause this. It only does this on this website. Could it be that they use a Quicktime plugin to play the music? I don't know cause I used to be able to play music on there before. It doesnt do this on my Reverbnation site page, just Icompositions. If I click on the icon to restart browser a box comes up saying "we're sorry"...your browser crashed for no apparent reason.....and offers a choice to either reload the page (that repeatedly crashes) or start new session. It isn't a big deal but this never used to happen before. Could it be some bad code on that website?

What is the best and easiest way to download music from an external website onto Ubuntu? I have both Rhythmbox and mplayer installed, but it's not clear to me how you download music so that it is recognized by those players. Would it be easier to use a terminal for downloading?

Sound can play but music can't in the game "second life" and I'm using it on ubuntu. I don't know how to fix the problem or where to begin and I had asked a tech in that game and they said it might have to do with the firewall, but wouldn't help me out because I wasn't premium. The first sentence is the problem.

I've been using Linux for about a week, now, and yesterday I finally got my audio to work. Before shutting-down yesterday, I installed some more audio-plugins. When I started-up my computer today, there were errors in the console-text that appears while the Debian Linux OS is loading. When I got to the desktop, I tried to play music, but no sound came-out. So, I tried to uninstall the plugins I installed yesterday and restarted. I got similar errors in the console-text as earlier. When my desktop loaded, I still had no sound. I had several problems with the entire sound architecture of the computer. I made some more changes in the application-download-manager-thingy and restarted and I no longer got the errors at boot-time.
Unfortunately, I still have absolutely no sound, and it appears as if ALSA is effectively dead. My soundcards are Rocketfish (PCI) and Realtek HD Audio (Integrated). I got Realtek to work yesterday with OSS.
Another problem is that WINE doesn't work, with the exception of WINE's default programs. I've been trying to get this thing to work for at least four days now, and I've made absolutely no progress...
Also, after fighting with it for a few days, I finally managed to get the internet to work, but Linux still thinks that I'm offline. It's really weird. This one's not so much of a problem as it is annoying. In addition, if I click-on the network-manager-thingy, it says that none of my connections have ever been used. Odd.

For those not familiar with the "motion" project it monitors your camera and when enough motion is detected in the video field of view it records that to a video file. The project website is here What I'm looking for is something like that but for audio, does anyone know of any Linux apps that can accomplish this?

I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04, then rapidly to 9.10, when support for 8.10 was finally phased out. I've been trying for a few days to figure out how to record sound and can't get anything working. Sound playback works fine.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Code:
The terminal programs execute and quit after ten seconds, as expected, and create a sound of the appropriate length in my home directory, which is what I want. They don't report any errors, but the sound file they create is just soft background static with occasional soft clicks. Audacity also just records soft static with soft occasional clicks. The Gnome Sound recorder does slightly better, recording almost-intelligible sounds with bad static distortion.
I've verified that sound levels are not muted using the mixer, and have run through the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide [url]. No joy.
Here's the output of lscpi -v:
Code:

I have input the sound from my TVcard into the line-in port of my soundcard. In VLC, I could view TV signal with both video and sound but when i click on "record"it only records video without the sound at all. When I view this in pulseaudio volume control, under the recording tab, there seems to be no application taking over when I click on record button under VLC. Yet if I start up gnome-recorder, I could capture the sound when I view TV with VLC and clearly under pulseaudio volume control I see recording application is that of gnome-recorder. What's the deal here? How could I make sure under VLC it will record the sound?

I've got sound - I hear all the system sounds, I can play sound files, CDs, etc. But I have not been able to record and play back anything with success.
Originally, when I would record (either with arecord or with audacity) I would get extremely low quality sound, with lots of noise and crackling, and my recorded voice was barely audible (even with volume turned up to max). I played with alsamixer for hours without being able to improve matters.
Things are worse now. I tried installing alsa-firmware, as indicated at SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE. I also tried updating alsa following instructions given at SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE. I'm not sure which of these changes did it, but the result is that I can no longer record ANYTHING at all. I get absolutely nothing, not even the low quality noise and crackling I was getting before. It's as if there is no audio input at all.
Uninstalling alsa-firmware and reverting back to the older alsa version (1.0.20) didn't change a thing.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2, kernel 2.6.31.14-0.6-desktop, alsa 1.0.20. My sound card is a Creative X-Fi (by the way, yast cannot detect my card, another problem I have never solved).

After upgrade today, I cannot record sound. All the equipment works fine when I boot into Windoze...
Running Audacity from a terminal gives me this message as it starts:
Code:
Expression 'stream->capture.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 3653
Google has thrown up some old posts (some here) - none really relevant and a hint on a mailing list that it may be a bug...
