General :: Boot Disk Recommendations For Grub And Ubuntu?

May 18, 2010

I'm still kinda new to linux. I've been learning my way around the command line and been experimenting with linux on a couple computers of mine. Occasionally after trying a few things, grub or linux won't load right. I've done some research on possible tools to help but I was wondering if any of the more experienced users had some recommendations for boot disk or tools to help repair grub and/or linux desktop/server editions.

p.s. I would also be interested in any fun and interesting tools, programs, and/or repository's that other users have found beneficial.

Even I cant restore Windows XP using "fxmbr" command in... recovery console .

But I can boot from that drive by "chainloader" command in grub. code...

Running above command in grub terminal boots my hard disk ("hd1" is my "unbootable disk")

Ubuntu :: Grub Out Of Disk Error On Boot

Sep 4, 2010

Edit: This is somewhat inaccurate, please see post #16 on page 2 for my actual situation

I'm more than a little confused by this. A little while back I had to reinstall my machine because I had a hard disk failure and I replaced my primary drive.Everything went perfectly smoothly, but then a couple of weeks after that when I rebooted, it dumped my into the grub rescue console

Code:

error: out of disk.
grub rescue>

So, I found a solution to the problem on these forums, rebooted perfectly fine, and thought everything was fine. Until the next time I rebooted, when it happened again. And now, every single time I reboot, I get the same issue.I have to do the following, each and every time I want to reboot - and i'm at a loss to explain why grub is borking itself every time.Boot off a live cd.Open a konsole window

Code:

sudo su -
mount /dev/sda6 /mnt
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual-boot `GRUB Hard Disk Error'

May 9, 2011

My system has Windows XP Pro SP2 installed on /sda1 and originally a 10.04 on /sdb1-3, now upgraded to 11.04. The Ubuntu system works fine (teething troubles with nvidia drivers on upgrade but fixed now), and the Windows system shows up in the grub menu, but when it's selected, I just get `GRUB Hard Disk Error' and nothing else. Windows installed properly, and booted successfully until I installed Ubuntu in the first place. I can still access the files on that drive from within Ubuntu.

I've tried fixboot in the Win Recovery Console, which sounded like it did something, but didn't fix the problem. This problem isn't new to grub2, by the way - I just haven't needed Windows in a year.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot - Windows - Grub Hard Disk Error ?

Oct 1, 2010

I have a dual boot System with Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix and Windows XP SP3 on an Asus eeePC 1000HE. I had some troubles with updating kernels etc. and I ended up with following problem:

After grub reinstall, I am able to boot Ubuntu, also I can mount the windows partition properly. Trying to boot into Windows, I get the error:

Code:

It's all on one hard drive which doesn't show any errors:

Code:

Partition table entries are not in disk order

Code:

Some partitions don't show a file system because they are luks-encrypted.

As I mentioned earlier, I am able to mount sda1. I think the problem is that the Partition Boot Sector is corrupted, even though I am not sure if the ntfs partition is damaged at all or if GRUB is the problem.

As I said I had problems with a kernel update and therefore had to reinstall GRUB. I think, but I am not sure, that I accidentally installed GRUB on sda1 (the windows partition) instead of on sda. After I installed GRUB on sda again, I was able to boot linux and fixed sda1 with testdisk. Before, sda1 showed as four partitions (sda1p1, ... , sda1p4). I was not able to mount sda1 till I fixed it with testdisk. testdisk says the Boot Sector of sda1 is OK, so does ntfsfix.

Finally, an extract from my /boot/grub/menu.lst:

Code: ...

The Windows XP entry is added by myself. I don't know much about grub, so there might be the error.

I tried to keep it as short as possible (this is only the end of the story), I hope I didn't forget anything important. Please ask if there is something not clear.

I am in Tanzania with this netbook, so it is not possible to boot Windows CD and fix the windows partition with it, also I don't have a very fast Internet connection.

Is there a way to fix this without a Windows CD? Maybe it is just a dumb mistake in the menu.lst?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04.1 Install Fails To Boot -> Error: Out Of Disk, Grub Rescue

Jul 13, 2011

Downloaded Ubuntu 10.04.1 Desktop AMD64, tried to install it to a cleand HDD using the whole HDD, i.e. gave it permission to use the whole HDD. Installation process appeared to run OK but when it came to the restart it just fired up the message

error: out of disk
grub rescue>

I've searched this forum and found numerous references to these error messages but cannot make head nor tail of the diagnostic suggestions. Apart from anything else they suggest strings of command lines which I don't understand and can't enter anyway since they don't correspond to my keyboard layout (if I hit > or ) something completely different appears on the screen). Is there someone here who can provide a step-by-step solution in lay language ? Or is there such a thing as a bootable file which can be downloaded and inserted into my CD drive to correct this problem ?

I cloned F14 with Clonezilla from 80GB to 320GB hdd(both sata disks), and then resized the partitions with GParted. But I can not boot into fedora on the new/bigger disk, it stops and the display writes "Loading stage 1.5" if I remember corectly,I tried to fix it with the live cd but with no efect.

Then i found Super Grub Disk live CD, and with that i tried to use their fix, which was the same as with the Fedora live cd i tried before, again no efect. Then i played around with Super Grub, and found the option to boot GNU/Linux indirectly, and with that metod i got results, found my menu.lst file and chose the kernel i wanted and it boots into desktop.

But i would need a more permanent solution, because now i allways have to use the same procedure with Super Grub Disk CD to boot into my Fedora 14.

Debian Installation :: Grub Rescue - Will Not Boot From Mdadm RAID - No Such Disk

Sep 19, 2014

I am running a 14 disk RAID 6 on mdadm behind 2 LSI SAS2008's in JBOD mode (no HW raid) on Debian 7 in BIOS legacy mode.

Grub2 is dropping to a rescue shell complaining that "no such device" exists for "mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f".

Output from mdadm:
Code: Select all    # mdadm -D /dev/md0
    /dev/md0:
            Version : 1.2
      Creation Time : Wed Nov  7 17:06:02 2012
         Raid Level : raid6
         Array Size : 35160446976 (33531.62 GiB 36004.30 GB)
      Used Dev Size : 2930037248 (2794.30 GiB 3000.36 GB)
       Raid Devices : 14

[Code] ....

Output from blkid:
Code: Select all    # blkid
    /dev/md0: UUID="2c61b08d-cb1f-4c2c-8ce0-eaea15af32fb" TYPE="xfs"
    /dev/md/0: UUID="2c61b08d-cb1f-4c2c-8ce0-eaea15af32fb" TYPE="xfs"
    /dev/sdd2: UUID="b1c40379-914e-5d18-dddb-893b4dc5a28f" UUID_SUB="09a00673-c9c1-dc15-b792-f0226016a8a6" LABEL="media:0" TYPE="linux_raid_member"

[Code] ....

The UUID for md0 is `2c61b08d-cb1f-4c2c-8ce0-eaea15af32fb` so I do not understand why grub insists on looking for `b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f`.

**Here is the output from `bootinfoscript` 0.61. This contains alot of detailed information, and I couldn't find anything wrong with any of it: [URL] .....

During the grub rescue an `ls` shows the member disks and also shows `(md/0)` but if I try an `ls (md/0)` I get an unknown disk error. Trying an `ls` on any member device results in unknown filesystem. The filesystem on the md0 is XFS, and I assume the unknown filesystem is normal if its trying to read an individual disk instead of md0.

I have come close to losing my mind over this, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling grub numerous times, `update-initramfs -u -k all` numerous times, `update-grub` numerous times, `grub-install` numerous times to all member disks without error, etc.

I even tried manually editing `grub.cfg` to replace all instances of `mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f` with `(md/0)` and then re-install grub, but the exact same error of no such device mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f still happened.

[URL] ....

One thing I noticed is it is only showing half the disks. I am not sure if this matters or is important or not, but one theory would be because there are two LSI cards physically in the machine.

This last screenshot was shown after I specifically altered grub.cfg to replace all instances of `mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f` with `mduuid/2c61b08d-cb1f-4c2c-8ce0-eaea15af32fb` and then re-ran grub-install on all member drives. Where it is getting this old b1c* address I have no clue.

I even tried installing a SATA drive on /dev/sda, outside of the array, and installing grub on it and booting from it. Still, same identical error.

General :: Changing GRUB From An External Hard Disk To The Internal Hard Disk?

Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

General :: Multi Boot Grub - All Systems Recognized But 10.10 Will Not Boot - Cannot Locate The UUID Specified

Dec 20, 2010

Problem: I have installed two Ubuntu servers, 10.04 32-bit and 10.10 64-bit, in a multi-boot environment (also have FDOS and WinXPsp3). The 64-bit will not boot because grub can't find the UUID for the disk with the 64-bit system.

Brief Background: Installed 10.04 LTS two months ago with no problems. 10.04 is in a primary partition on hda with FDOS.

Installed 10.10 (64-bit) in a new primary partition on the same hd. The install seemed to go ok, but the MBR and the fs on the 10.04 were corrupted; could not boot. Restored drive, and rebuilt grub.

Installed 10.10 on separate hd (hdb). In grub step all OS's were recognized so I pointed the grub to hda. Grub failed to boot.

Rebuilt grub from 10.04 on hda. All systems recognized but 10.10 will not boot because it says it cannot locate the UUID specified.

Compared the grub.cfg for both systems, the UUID specified for hdb is the same. Also, when I mount the drive for 10.10 on the 10.04 system the drive UUID is consistent.

I know I must be missing some thing, but I know not what. Have searched and can't find any clues. All other OS's boot ok.

Hardware: AMD64 4GB, 2 internal IDE drives (hda and hdb), 1 internal SATA (hdc WinXP), various USB and Firewire Drives (no bootable systems).

Reading various hardware support list gives some information about if a card works or not, but not if its good. Also, I would like to buy a card from a vendor that actively supports linux. Can someone recommend a really good DVB-T card?

I would need: DVB-T support.Radio as an option. Two or more channels, three seems like the maximum that I would ever need, but who knows. Doesn't matter if its one or two cards, as long as it works. CAM support. Additional card or built in. I have no idea of how this works actually, but I think the CA module must support mpeg4 too? HDTV/Mpeg4 support (Software is fine, I guess.) I would also need a good remote control (bluetooth) that not neccesarily needs to come with the card, and a decent fanless graphics card that handles hdtv on linux...

Assistance in choosing a no frills rolling Linux Distro. Over the past few months have gotten my feet wet with Mepis, Linux Mint, Ubuntu and other distros. I really like these Linux distros. However, I dislike the need to frequently "reinstall" a distro as often as every 6 months just to keep it updated.

My computer:

PC with 1.4 GHz Athlon

320 Gig hard drive partitioned equally between Windows XP and a Linux Distro.

My computer is used primarily as a jukebox connected to my stereo system, and for email, browsing, etc. I am not a gamer.I'm tired of Windows and its problems; malware, viruses, and currently if I upgrade to Windows 7, I'll need a new computer just to meet the hardware requirements when what I have works for my needs, but the XP operating system is becoming obsolete.
