View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using a server where i need to login twice. The first time i login as my boxname and pass. The 2nd login is 'root' so i can access the content of the box (i dont understand it but that hasnt stopped me from using it as normal). Now i like a GUI so i can browse files easier and drag and drop multiple files instead of using the command line. WinSCP doesnt work as it locks up. I suspect its because there is a prompt to log in again.
What can i use to drag & drop files?
I figured out how to fix the no eth0 present error. I ran depmod -a, and also removed the HWADDR line from the ifcfg-eth0 file.
My problem now is that WinSCP cannot log into the system - the error is that the shell is not set properly.
I have set root's shell to /bin/bash. But am not able to log in. WinSCP is using ssh, port 22. I have allowed root login on the Fedora server.
I installed the Syncrify server and client on a Linux box. From what I've read on their site, Syncrify comes with a built in self-signed SSL certificate. However after setting the SSL port on the Syncrify Admin Set-Up, I am still unable to login with a client through SSL. This works: (5800 is the default port for HTTP)[URL]...
However the following do not work:[URL]...

I am unable to login as root to a linux machine through SSH. Login through console is working fine. SSH is not working only for root user. It is working fine for other users. I have checked the sshd_config file and it says:PermitRootLogin yesI'd be grateful if somebody can give an idea about what is going wrong.
View 15 Replies View RelatedWe have a Debian Lenny / Samba server sharing files on a LAN with Windows clients. We also have several remote users who login in via WinSCP to do simple file transfers. (A OpenVPN was too slow due to bandwidth issues.)
Is there a way to lock the WinSCP connections to a specific directory?
My first thought was to move the remote users' home directory to the portion of the directory tree shared via Samba:
usermod -d /data/public/ username
but that does not stop them from going up the directory tree.
i am not able to do root login even from terminal also. I was trying to block remote login through this ........

after this i am not able to make root login from su as well.
I have a Linux machine which I set up for my personal use at home. I installed Fedora Core 11 a long time ago, and recently I noticed that I am not able to log in as root (I didn't realize this issue until recently since I always have been logging in as a user account that I created during the FC11 installation). When I login as a user account instead of root, I can use the su command with the password I set up for the root account. Even when I'm in GUI mode and try to make changes to the system from the user account, the GUI asks to enter the root password, and I type the password I set for root and it works. However, if I boot the machine and try to log in the system as root, password that I set up is rejected.
I'm very puzzled with this problem because with my limited knowledge on Linux system, I thought the root password and the su password are the same (i.e. when you install Linux OS, you set the root password, and you use the same password for using the su command). I do not know exactly when this problem started, but the only thing that I can think of as a cause of this issue is that I once changed the root password from GUI using System > Administration > Root password since the system one time complained about the low security strength of the root password.
I newly installed Ububtu 8,04.3. I formatted my hard drive and erased Windows XP and tried to do the manual partitioning but don't have enough knowledge so picked the guided tour. Everything seemed to install but when I restarted it comes to "computer log-in" and wants a user name and password. I put in the user name I chose during installation and tried to put in the password but it wouldn'd type in - it also seemed to want a name for "computer." Does anyone know where I went wrong? I've been struggling to learn computer stuff on my own.

I'm using ubuntu 9.04 formy web developments. today morning i boot my syste, normally. but it does not allow me to login. it displays some routine messages like command prompt. These messages are like this given below.,

I installed Fedora 11 and was trying to setup a Web server for pure LAMP development and wanted to port forward with router so that my webserver can be access from inter net.
Server installation was perfectly fine. I was able to login from the user which I created during the installation. Instead of auto get ip I assigned 192.168.1.100 and then I set a HTML Server port forward.
Where the problem started.
I wanted to configure few users on vsFTPd and I tell you truly there is no place on Google where some one has defined a descent way which any person can understand that we can add some users.
Somewhere I found that Linux normal users can also access ftp if the local_user directive is set YES which i did and I added 3 users.
I wanted that whenever user is connected by vsFTPd returned them /var/www/html directory. Where as vsFTPD was taking them to their home directory (respective to each user)
I was unable to find any way that I can configure vsFTPd to set one default directory path which take every user to www/html directory so that developers can deploy websites.
I notice Gnome GUI offers each user a home directory path so I though why not I gave every new user and existing user /var/www/html as their home directory
which i did... and this is how my Server stop responding to any further login attempts.
FTP is still working fine if I left it open It let the ftp client to connect but Linux server is not allowing login by any user
It gives an error 'Could not update ICEAuthority file /var/www/html//.ICEauthority'
And when i click close then next message is : 'There is problem with the configuration server (/usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)'
Is there any way i can undo? Is there any way i can go directly to shell and remove those users and re-add some new users in the default way - I believe if I can add one new user with default directory /home/user I will be able to login
After this is resolve still I will need to search how we can add FTP users and take them to the directory /var/www/html
I installed dtc, dtc-postfix-courier and a few other depend software. When I re-started the server, I was unable to login with my usual login information. I am able to go to recovery mode to change the password but I am still unable to login to the system. Essentially, only root is able to access data on the server.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
System was fine with :Ubuntu 9.04 (had also installed kde )then....I wanted to try some change to gdm so i downloaded gdm while building it , it asked "PAM" libraries to be installed so i installed PAM ... but ignored the instruction to reinstall SHADOW (library i guess..),Now :on booting system i get login menu but i am not able to login , it says some critical error occured
1) install new copy of UBUNTU and remove old
ps :1) i can log into system through live cd

I am currently running Ubuntu Server 9.10 as an FTP server. It has become a necessity to allow users access via SSH terminal or sftp via WinSCP. I need to be able to monitor what users are doing at any given time and be able to pull up each users activity history. Essentially I need to be able to pinpoint who modified a file at what time. Also what is the best method to monitor things like nmap probes?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an iMac G4 that I installed Jessie on successfully. However, when it boots, one of the last messages is:
[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
Last line is something along the lines of:
fb: switching to nouveaufb from OFfb NVDA,NVMac
And then the text starts dissolving, and the entire screen cycles through different colors. I presume it is sitting at the graphical login prompt but it's not displaying correctly.
Based on some Google searches, it seems like I should be able to resolve this by editing /etc/modules but I can't get to that point. I have tried to get to a terminal using ctrl-alt-F1 through ctrl-alt-F12. No luck. I tried different yaboot options that were supposed to avoid using the video driver. No luck. How do I get the machine to boot straight to a regular text login instead of the X one?
This machine worked fine running Mac OS X this morning, so I don't think it's the hardware. What I can do.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a local computer (local), and remote computer (remote) behind of remote server (server). Also, I have user access to all of these 3 machines. Now, I want mount some directory, located at remote, to my local mount-point via sshfs. How should I setup my local sshfs and what should be done on server to make this mounting?
I'm stuck with ssh tunneling because the default method for tunneling requires root access while WinSCP somehow could do this with only user access (the tunnel server could be configured there in 'tunnel' panel).
