I am trying to setup a putty session to putty from one Ubuntu machine to another. I know how to setup to connect to the machine from Windows and I am using the same settings for the one I am trying on the Ubuntu machine but it fails to connect. It fails immediately so I believe that putty is not able to find ssh. Is there some configuring that I need to do.

General :: GUI File Manager For Ssh/linux With A Shell - WinSCP Doesnt Work As It Locks Up?

I am using a server where i need to login twice. The first time i login as my boxname and pass. The 2nd login is 'root' so i can access the content of the box (i dont understand it but that hasnt stopped me from using it as normal). Now i like a GUI so i can browse files easier and drag and drop multiple files instead of using the command line. WinSCP doesnt work as it locks up. I suspect its because there is a prompt to log in again.

What can i use to drag & drop files?

Fedora :: 10 - WinSCP Cannot Log Into The System

Nov 16, 2009

I figured out how to fix the no eth0 present error. I ran depmod -a, and also removed the HWADDR line from the ifcfg-eth0 file.

My problem now is that WinSCP cannot log into the system - the error is that the shell is not set properly.

I have set root's shell to /bin/bash. But am not able to log in. WinSCP is using ssh, port 22. I have allowed root login on the Fedora server.

Software :: WinSCP Logins To Specific Directory?

Feb 16, 2011

We have a Debian Lenny / Samba server sharing files on a LAN with Windows clients. We also have several remote users who login in via WinSCP to do simple file transfers. (A OpenVPN was too slow due to bandwidth issues.)

Is there a way to lock the WinSCP connections to a specific directory?

My first thought was to move the remote users' home directory to the portion of the directory tree shared via Samba:

usermod -d /data/public/ username

but that does not stop them from going up the directory tree.

Fedora Networking :: Samba Guest Account With Password Of 'guest'?

Mar 16, 2009

I have a local file server running Samba on Fedora 9. It's already configured and serves a few people without any problems. I am now trying to set up a new read-only share with the username 'guest' and the password 'guest'. However, with no success so far! If I log on as 'guest' with the password 'guest' like so:

Code:

su - guest
No problem. Once logged in, if I try:

Code:

smbclient //samba/share

I'm prompted for a password. If I enter 'guest' I get:

Code:

session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

If I enter nothing (null) I get:

Code:

Anonymous login successful
Domain=[RIVER] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.8-0.26.fc9]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

OpenSUSE :: Virtualbox Guest Additions: Set A Shared Folder In 11.2 Guest

Mar 4, 2010

OpenSUSE installed in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine and I want to set a shared folder.

1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2

2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder)

3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices > Shared Folders...

4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel

5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices > Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest.

6 - Open a root terminal and run

cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep
cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers .
make prepare

* A commenter on previously mentioned thread says this step is unnecessary but it doesn't work without on my system. I suggest trying step 7 first and returning to step 6 if that fails. *

7 - Run ./VirtualboxLinux yourhosttype .run from the mounted iso image.

8 - Create shared folder in OpenSUSE (GuestFolder)

9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access.

10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0

11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a

Fedora :: Installing Guest Additions Virtualbox 13 Guest?

Jun 3, 2010

I had a lot of trouble installing Guest Additions within the Fedora 13 Guest on a Linux host. I had to mount the vboxGuestadditions.iso from the Device --> CD/DVD Devices menu. Then I located the appropriate package for my system. In my case it was the AMD64 Linux version.I ran this as administrator in Terminal. I used the "bash" command followed by the package name. This was after CDing the the appropriate directory. The packaged installed, I then rebooted and it worked fine. (Something that would make this easier is to load a script into nautilus that would allow me to open a locatation as administartor at the open window. I'm sure there is something in Fedora to do this but I couldn't find it in a hurry so I used the command line way).

Is it possible to configure PuTTY to have me some nice colour scheme like vim's desert?

I'm an PuTTY user under Windows and my login shell is tcsh. The current PuTTY theme setting is a very boring "black background and white character" user interface.

If it is possible, could you illustrate a little bit about how it works?

I've goolged this issue, but it seem both client side and server side settings are involved in changing PuTTY's appearance, which makes me quite confused.

General :: Vps With Putty Closing, Or Freezing?

Apr 30, 2011

I recently purchased a dedicated server and have been having trouble with putty. I have been using the server to try and host the game called minecraft. Hosting the server is not a problem however. What is the problem is being able to exit putty without stopping the server. I looked this up, and it sayed to create a screen. I did that after installing screen. I then created a screen, ran the server, then tried to disconnect using the ctr-a-d.However only two things happen when i push the buttons. The majority of the time the window just closes, along with my server stopping. The other thing that happens is putty just stops. I cant type in anything, but I am still notified when I try to close putty.
