Jun 21, 2010I'm looking for the .config file for the kernel which ubuntu uses to compile the standard generic kernel which is delivered in compiled form. I downloaded the following kernel archive ( 2.6.31.8 ): [URL]... I need the original file, because I'm not able to configure a working kernel, so I want to try to compile the kernel with the standard configuration. Afterwards I'm going to change some options.

Jun 24, 2010I did the UPGRADE from Karmic Koala to Lucid, and everything was going well. But now I've been having problems with the UBUNTU UPDATE tool for the last 2 weeks. Every time I try to do an update check on the packages, I get the following message:Failed to fetch http:[url]....Release Unable to find expected entry deb-src/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. I've also checked for other posts, but haven't found a solution yet. Here's my SOURCES LIST (gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list)# See http:[url].... for how to upgrade to # newer versions of the distribution.
Debian :: RIPIT Can't Find The Config File?
Jan 20, 2011I've installed RIPIT 3.6.0-1 for Lenny and have been following this tutorial to define a config file that saves all my options and which I can call every time I want to rip a CD [URL]
Following that tutorial I copied the config file in etc/ripit/config to the new director ~/.ripit/config. The new directory and file exist as I can see them when I do ls -a and can edit the new config file.
However when I type the command ripit all I get is the error message No config file found!

Ubuntu :: Sudo Aptitude Install Fbpanel / Can't Find Config File
Jul 9, 2010I installed fbpanel with sudo aptitude install fbpanel, but I can't find the config file. according to the readme it's suppose to be under ~/.config/fbpanel/default, but it's not there. Where else can it be? I did a whereis fbpanel and it's located in a few areas, but no default config file is there!

Jul 24, 2010My sound card (Soundblaster 24 live! USB) stopped working shortly after upgrading to 10.04. everything was fine until the upgrade as well a immediatly after, so I assume that an update was to blame. If I boot the PC off a live CD, all is well and the sound card works fine.
I've tried running
aplay -l
but it assured me that I do not have a sound card on the system to setup! how I find the broken config file or busted driver?

General :: Ubuntu 11.04 - Unable To Find Medium Containing Live File System
Jul 13, 2011I'm new to this and I'm sure I've just gone and done something silly. I used pendrivelinux.com's live usb creator to install ubantu 11.04 on my USB. I tried booting my laptop with this, and i get an error message saying "unable to find a medium containing live file system" and I cant get any further than that. The laptop I am using is a Dell XPS with an i7 processor and 6 gigs of memory.

Aug 15, 2010I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

(cached) /usr/bin/pkg-config checking pkg-config is at least version 0.14 checking for GLIB - version >= 2.0... 2.0, bad version string no configure: error: Cannot find GLIB version >= 2.0: is pkg-config in path?" I have glib-2.24.0 installed on this system so I don't understand where this issue is coming from or how to fix it.

Oct 8, 2010I have an ubuntu server virtual machine with a webhost. I am trying to configure the firewall. I am having a problem with sendmail and the required firewall configuraiton If I type the command:
iptables -F
Then sendmail works perfectly. I can see the emails sent in my googlemail inbox. I then configure my firewall as follows:
iptables -F
iptables -A INPUT -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 2252 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

(I have moved SSH to a diffrent port) Once this is setup sendmail no longer works. I had assumed that sendmail will establish a tcp connection and the first rule will allow all established connections to pass. why this iptables/netfilter config stops sendmail from working.

Jul 31, 2010I was just wondering if using a non-smp kernel would be ok on a older p4 system with no x. I am wondering due to some functionality in IPTABLES that is broken in the SMP kernels ( -m owner --sid.pid,cmd-owner).
Could someone that is running a NON-SMP kernel advise as to whether the support for -m owner --cmd-owner is working in iptables with those kernels? Also, could someone advise me if running a NON-SMP kernel is even advisable? The machine will not have x.

Aug 2, 2010So I decided a while ago to download the newest distribution release, Lucid Lynx, and try it out on a LiveCD. The first thing I installed onto the LiveCD environment was CompizConfig Settings Manager. One question I have about it is... Why are so many of the plugins missing or limited?
In 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, there are many plugin options, and to be honest, I use a large quantity of them. For example, a plugin I use on 9.04 called "Reflection." For those of you who don't know, reflection allows you to show an image in window decorations and shadows. This plugin is completely missing from CompizConfig Settings Manager in 10.04!
Another example, this time a limited one, is the Animations plugin. It's missing the option for closing animation called "Burn." This is an animation I LOVE showing off and using, yet it's... Gone.
Am I missing something? Did I do something wrong on installing it? Is there a way to get the parts that are missing?
Just in case you're wondering how I installed it, it was the popular method of using GNOME-Terminal and typing:
