I recently built my second general-purpose server, and recently installed fedora core 10 on it. The first thing I attempted to set up after installation was the network - and that's where it's gone wrong When editing a network device using the graphical system-config-network utility, I find that the subnet mask is being automatically changed to match the default gateway address every time I attempt to modify any of its settings (or sometimes even when I cancel the changes). This also means that I cannot set the subnet mask, as it simply won't accept my setting for it. I seem to be able to get around this glitch by setting the subnet mask using the shell version of the same utility, but that doesn't solve my network issue.
Even when I use the shell utility to fix the subnet mask, I'm unable to ping other computers or routers on the network even when ifconfig indicates that the desired ip address has been taken, and other computers on the network are also unable to see the server. I'm using a wired connection and a static IP address on a network with no DHCP.

Basically, I have a windows 2003 server virtual machine (vmware) inside Ubuntu 9.10.
The Ubuntu machine has IFconfig:
Code: sam@sam-laptop:~$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:15:c5:b8:c8:8b
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
Interrupt:17
Why can't I ping or simply access the internal server on my ubuntu machine from a another computer on the 192.168.1.0 (slash)25 physical network? Do I need a bridge? Iptables?

I am using centos box as a router. WAN side has a public ip and lan side also using a public ip. I configured dhcp server on the LAN side and it is working perfectly, pcs on the LAN side can able to access the internet.
Problem: Considering the fact that LAN IPs is using Public IP and it is presumed that from the internet it can be able to ping IPs inside the LAN but, alas, it couldn't.
No firewall has been config!
Question: What config should be done on the box so that IPs inside the LAN can be ping from the internet?

I was just wondering if using a non-smp kernel would be ok on a older p4 system with no x. I am wondering due to some functionality in IPTABLES that is broken in the SMP kernels ( -m owner --sid.pid,cmd-owner).
Could someone that is running a NON-SMP kernel advise as to whether the support for -m owner --cmd-owner is working in iptables with those kernels? Also, could someone advise me if running a NON-SMP kernel is even advisable? The machine will not have x.

I've got two routers, 10.0.0.0/23 and 192.168.2.0/24, which are joined by a Linux box with interfaces eth0 (10.0.0.2) and ra0 (192.168.2.2). I've got masquerading for ra0, and a route to 192.168.2.0/24 on 10.0.0.0's router. I CAN ping hosts on 192.168.2.0 from 10.0.0.0 just fine, but I CANNOT access web pages.Strangely, If I enable masquerading on eth0, and add a route to 192.168.2.0s router to 10.0.0.0, I can ping AND access web pages from 192.168.2.0Here is my current iptables
Code:

I have connected xp and fedora through crossover cable . xp has ip address 192.168.0.1/24 (manually assigned) fedora has 192.168.0.2/24 with default route equal to 192.168.0.1
I can ping fedora from xp computer but i can't able to ping xp from fedora computer.
I have manully edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file with correct subnet mask and ip address because when i tried to give ip address manully in network manager the subnetmask is replaced with gateway address don't know why.
Now i want to share internet through crossover cable . xp is connected to internet through wireless usb adapeter.

i have set firewall for centos of 192.168.1.21 server like this.
it has a gateway of 192.168.1.2
iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -A INPUT --in-interface lo -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --destination-port 22 -m mac --mac-source 00:0F:EB:91:00:01 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --destination-port 80 -m mac --mac-source 00:0F:EB:91:00:01 -j ACCEPT
the mac source is my laptop's mac address. But when i try to ping from my laptop of 192.168.0.2 (my gateway is 192.168.0.1 but share the same server that has 3 network gateway including gateway for the centos)it failed. what i should do to enable this ping.i also cannot connect to the centos server unless i change my ip to 192.168.1.x and same gateway as centos.can someone suggest what should i modify my firewall to enable connection to centos server from my 192.168.0.2 laptop? is that related to nat and forward chain in firewall of centos?

I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.

I'm using Ubuntu server 9.10 with 2 NICS (Internet-router-eth0, eth1-LAN). I use iptables to generate rules for 20 computers, but when I execute the script, ALL TRAFFIC DROPS, including the server. What am I doing wrong?
Code:
#!/bin/sh
#eth0 192.168.0.50 - connected to Internet
#eth1 192.168.1.51 - connected to LAN
#192.168.1.52 - workstation1
#set default policies
iptables -P INPUT DROP
[Code]...
iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -s 192.168.1.52 -j ACCEPT. The reason I'm doing this is, I just want to open necessary ports in the server and restrict LAN usage.

I just installed my first EVER bind DNS server. I am running bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything seems to be working great except one thing: If I ping a host that I have set up in bind by its HOSTNAME the pings take 5-6 seconds to reply/print to the screen between each echo response. If I ping by the host's IP address, they echo back very quickly.
I have read that IPv6 can cause this, but I have disabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf and the problem still exists.
I know everyone says this can't be a DNS issue, but this never was an issue with dnsmasq (which i was using prior), and it doesn't make sense that the ping are ONLY slow when pinging by hostname and not IP.
Configs below:
Ping by hostname - there is a 5-6 second delay between each one of the responses:
Code:
Ping by IP - the responses come VERY quickly one after the other:
Code:
/etc/resolv.conf:
Code:
Code:
rev.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa:
Code:

So, I have an Virtual Machine running CentOS 5.4. It sits behind a hardware firewall which also does NAT'ing. I've set up plenty of these, so I know for sure the firewall and NAT rules are set up correctly. From the host, I can ping anything in my subnet and the gateway. But I can't ping anything else beyond the gateway. I can perform DNS queries and when I try to ping, it finds the appropriate IP address. But from the outside, I can ping the PUBLIC address (It's a 1 public to 1 private address NAT, not 1 public to multiple private). I've tried it with IPTABLES on and off, with no change.

I have Mandriva One 2009.0 (192.168.1.100) on one box and Mandriva Free 2010.0 (192.168.1.118) on the other. I can ping router (192.168.1.1) from both of these boxes but I can't ping one box to the other and the other way around. What's going on?.
Do I have to change some settings in router?. Or is it firewall issue on those two machines?. Both of these boxes are connected by cable. Symbol of the router: TL-WR340G.

I have an ubuntu server virtual machine with a webhost. I am trying to configure the firewall. I am having a problem with sendmail and the required firewall configuraiton If I type the command:
iptables -F
Then sendmail works perfectly. I can see the emails sent in my googlemail inbox. I then configure my firewall as follows:
iptables -F
iptables -A INPUT -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 2252 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
[Code]....
(I have moved SSH to a diffrent port) Once this is setup sendmail no longer works. I had assumed that sendmail will establish a tcp connection and the first rule will allow all established connections to pass. why this iptables/netfilter config stops sendmail from working.

My ISP (Insight if you know them) says I had open ports. OK I did! Shame on me! I'll blame my $15.00 router but I know it's my fault. OK took care of that. But when I run Shields Up from grc.com it keeps telling me it can ping (IMCP) me. I tried to get the firewall to stop, or drop the ping and it seems to on my local network, I can't ping my my boxes locally and I can't even ping my router. But Shields Up keeps telling me it can ping meAny one know how I can see what's sending the ping, or I guess they call it the pong, back to echo the ping?

Have installed fedora 14 on a HyperV virtual machine, have added a Legacy network adapter in the Hyper-V settings for this virtual machine that fedore pics up as eth0. I'm pretty sure this card is able to pick up an IP address from a DHCP server on our network but I'm unable to ping any boxes from this fedora virtual machine or ping the fedora machine from another box on the network. I have tried to disable the firewall and SELinux incase it was that stopping the pinging each way but that didn't help.

I have 4 installations of Fedora 14 running on a Win 2008 R2 server in Hyper-V.
When I try to ping my desktop or the host server via the hostname from within any of the Fedora installations, the ping fails. I can ping by IP without issue. Also if I try to ping the VMs from my desktop it fails. I have an XP VM setup that I can ping without issue via hostname and IP.
All of the VMs can access the Internet without issue. I have disabled all firewalls on all systems with no luck. My desktop can ping the Hyper-V server without issue so it would appear that the problem lies with the Fedora installations.

I'm using FC10 on my box at work. It is behind an anthenticated proxy for internet connection. In Gnome, I configured the Network Proxy through the GUI, as my browsers too.
So I can browse internet pages, install packages thru Add/Remove Software GUI, but I cant do it in the command line, using yum install, for example. Then trying to figure it out, I saw that it cant reach the package mirrors. It isnt a DNS problem, I set the /etc/resolv.conf correctly, as the host command works correclty. I can ping the local pcs on the network too. Firewall is disabled. Below some simple tests:
[rtovo@davinci ~]$ ping mirrors.fedoraproject.org
connect: Network is unreachable
[rtovo@davinci ~]$ host mirrors.fedoraproject.org
mirrors.fedoraproject.org is an alias for wildcard.fedoraproject.org.
