General :: Ubuntu - Setting Alarms To Alert User?

May 3, 2010

I am running few tasks in my linux console and want to be notified by some kind of alarm, so I don't keep checking the progress of the task.

Is there a way to customize the alarm by specifying additional filters like "ERROR" message, etc? I think it will be a useful thing to have.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2: Long During Boot After Rtc - Alarms Up?

Dec 1, 2009

I have just upgraded from 11.1 to 11.2. Many problems! Here's the first. During the boot sequence, my system stalls after rtc0: alarms up to one month, y3k, hpet irqs. and before device-mapper: uevent: version 1.0.3 The system waits for maybe 3 or 4 minutes before continuing the boot sequence, so one of those two commands is causing the problem.

How can i grant permission for files to specific user or specific group ??

Updated:

We have 3 groups: "g12" ("u1" and "u2), "g34" and "g56".

"g12" should only read the file.

"g34" should write and read it.

"g56" should have all permissions (rwx).

And others should not access the file at all.

General :: Setting Up User To Use Sudo For Specific Commands?

Jan 17, 2011

I did some digging on the sudo command and I do know the config file is /etc/sudoers Read the manual for sudoers and found out that I must use visudo to edit the file I read some of the examples at the bottom of the file and tried entering my own account in following the example. one of the commands I was trying to allow my account to perform without root login is the mount command So I tried adding this in (kreid8 /bin/mount ALL) I then saved & exited the file and logged out of root and tried sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media. I got an error saying I had to be root in order to do that But when I use the visudo -l option it shows that I have that privellege. Did I edit the file incorrectly?

General :: Setting User Mountpoint Permissions In Fstab Without Uid / Umask

Jan 30, 2010

I'm struggling to understand an aspect of mounting and mountpoints with /etc/fstab. There is a large number of sites and threads that make recommendations using things like uid, gid, umask, and other options. These methods, however, which I've used, are file-system specific, useful only for filesystems such as (V)FAT and NTFS that allow them.My current situation is that I am mounting partition /dev/sdb5 in, let's call it /media/myMount. My goals:Mount this partition automatically upon boot using /etc/fstab...The partition should be fully accessible only to a specific user or group. What I've done is create the mount point in /media:

If user michapma were to carry out the mount, I believe it would work; however, I want the mount to happen automatically during boot. So, how can I achieve my user (or group) permission goals for this and any other such partitions using fstab? The manpage for mount has been helpful, but after reading many tutorials and forum threads, the only way I know how to do it is to have the user do the mounting or rely on the file-system specific options.

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Shares For Non-user Owned Folders?

Mar 11, 2010

I've setup a Moodle server on 9.10 server, and have been able to share user folders back to the windoze machines on the home net. What I'd like to do is share the Moodle main folder (and descendents) likewise. The problem is that it's owned by root. For ther user folders, as long as the owning user was logged in they were able to mark the folder as shared and everything worked very smoothly. When I try to mark the moodle folder as shared, no suprise I get a permission error. Is there a way of doing a "sudo su" from the GUI desktop to allow this to happen? Or do I have to set up the share from a command line (after having done a sudo su)? Can anyone give me the magic commands needed to do such?

Ubuntu :: Changing Icon And Setting User Permissions?

Oct 29, 2010

I tried to place a mono icon in usr/icons/etc but I didn't have the permission to do so. I tried to change my user profile to Admin, thinking I could go back to custom, but that hasn't and it isn't allowing me to go back to my previous setting.

Within minutes of being an Admin user I noticed I couldn't even unmount something. I really need to figure out how to change my profile back to default.

After that has been dealt with, I would like some guidance on how to gain root access to put my icon where it needs to be.

Ubuntu Security :: Advance User Setting Shell

Jun 22, 2011

As I was researching on how to create a kiosk Ubuntu setting I came upon a suggestion to create the user with '/usr/bin/screen' shell option.Hope you all would forgive me for this noob question but what does this mean? I saw when I checked the Advance Settings Advance tab that there are a couple of possible options there, what do they mean and how will they affect the user profile I'm creating? I tried google for this and if my understanding is correct, these shells are suppose to be programmable and a scripting language for linux but I'm confused on what effect this has on the user profile I'm creating? One thing I notice though is that with the '/usr/bin/screen' option, the user account is refused of the Applications > Accessories > Terminal option. When I googled each one of the options I'm getting more confused as to the relevance of this to the user profile.

Ubuntu Networking :: FTP Server - Setting Default Directory Per User

Jun 21, 2010

I am using VSFTPD as my FTP daemon. I want it to be set up so that my user (cj) will have a default directory of / when I log on to the FTP server and I want the secondary account (guest) to have it's home directory as the default location without any access to the root of the drive.

I need my account to have the default as / because the FTP client that I use in Windows won't go up to the parent directory of the default. Therefore, I cannot access the rest of my drive.

When I set "local_root" to "/" , it brings both users to the / directory when they sign in, even though the guest account is set to open the home directory with the "chroot_list_enable". It seems like the local_root option overrides the chroot_list_enable option.

Is there any way to set the default directory for each local user separately?

Also, Let me know if this is impossible with this FTP daemon

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up Samba For Windows 7 WITH User-login?

Oct 25, 2010

I am currently attempting to setup Samba 3 (installed) for a basic home-network file-sharing server via Ubuntu 10.04. It seems like (based on my extensive googling and research) nobody wants or has a configuration like I do, but surely SOMEBODY knows how to do this.

The following is my goal for a basic setup.

Folder 1 (share is called "Read-Write"):

-Users from Windows 7 can see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 1 as they so desire.

-Users can accomplish all of this from as "guest."

Folder 2 (share is called "Read-Only"):

-I can log in as my user to see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 2 as I so desire.

-People other than me can log in as "guest."

-"Guest" users from Windows 7 can see, read, and execute programs as desired.

Things I have accomplished:

-Directories exist

-Directories are browseable via Windows 7

-My user has a password for Samba (assigned via "sudo smbpasswd -a matthew)

Things I have not yet been able to accomplish:

-Configure Folder 2 so that Samba asks for login credentials when someone tries to access it SO THAT I an use my Samba user to log in.

-Configure Folder 2 so that, when I log in as my Samba user, I can see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 1 as I so desire.

-Configure Folder 2 so that Windows 7 users can easily access it as guest to browse, read, and execute files and folders in it.

-Configure Folder 1 so that any Windows 7 user can easily access it as guest to see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 1 as they so desire.
