Ubuntu Security :: Advance User Setting Shell

Jun 22, 2011

As I was researching on how to create a kiosk Ubuntu setting I came upon a suggestion to create the user with '/usr/bin/screen' shell option.Hope you all would forgive me for this noob question but what does this mean? I saw when I checked the Advance Settings Advance tab that there are a couple of possible options there, what do they mean and how will they affect the user profile I'm creating? I tried google for this and if my understanding is correct, these shells are suppose to be programmable and a scripting language for linux but I'm confused on what effect this has on the user profile I'm creating?One thing I notice though is that with the '/usr/bin/screen' option, the user account is refused of the Applications > Accessories > Terminal option.When I googled each one of the options I'm getting more confused as to the relevance of this to the user profile.

As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user.However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory.Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.

Is there a way to delete files on the commandline that uses the KDE-Wastebin?It appears that I never ever need the KDE4 Wastebin for files that I deleted through Konqueror or Dolphin. It is only when I delete files on the konsole with rm that I wish I could undelete them. It always happens like that, mostly by being in the wrong directory or using a wildcard when I should not have. (I don't have any erroneous deleted file right now, and I do have plenty of backups, but I just wonder whether there is something better than rm to use generally on the commandline.)

Programming :: Setting Variables In C-shell?

Jul 12, 2010

I'm running into a problem when I try to set a variable to an awk output in c-shell. Right now my command is Code: set STR_MSG_TYPE = `awk -F{ '/msg_type/ {print $2}' <filename> | tr -d }'/''*' ` I then run echo to see what the output is and it returns blank, however, when I run the same awk command from the command line, I get an actual output of "MT-715". Am I setting my variable incorrectly? I do something similar using the date command to set a STR_DATE variable earlier in the code and it works fine and I use the same syntax.

Ubuntu :: Setting Root Password For Maintenance Shell - Failed

Aug 10, 2010

I'd like to keep root pw==sudo pw==user pw on a box with Code: $ lsb_release -ds Ubuntu 9.10 $ uname -rv 2.6.31-22-generic #61-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 02:02:56 UTC 2010 Just now it hung going to sleep, so I shutdown via BRS. On cold boot, HD mount failed and I got the prompt to hit Esc to goto maintenance shell. I did that, got the prompt for the root password, and entered my sudo.

That failed! though it has worked before ... but I changed my user password on that box recently, and I'm pretty sure I haven't needed to fsck between then and now. I'm wondering: What do I need to do to set my root pw? I was able to C-d out of the shell, and karmic took care of itself, but I'd prefer not to rely on that. Is there a way to make my root pw always equal my user pw? If so, is that a Very Bad Idea?

General :: Executing Shell Script - Setting Permissions And Providing Path

Jan 4, 2011

I've been looking around the net for executing a shell script. My basic understanding is that after setting executable permissions and providing a path (#!/bin/sh) in the first line of the script, I can type ./myscript to execute instead of sh myscript. This is not working for me. I can run "sh myscript" but not "./myscript" even though I know for sure I have across the board execute permission and my sh path is correct. I'm working on a redhat linux station.

Ubuntu Servers :: Run A Shell Command As Another User?

Apr 26, 2011

The short version: I have to manage some virtual machines using php shell_exec function, so far I cant do this because apache is run by the user www-data and virtualbox by the user vboxuserFrom what I've read so far, I've thought of 3 possible solutions: 1.- Create a script on my vboxuser that I can call from php to manage the Virtual Machines.2.- Change the apache user from www-data to vboxuser so I can manage the Virtual Machines through php
3.- Reinstall VirtualBox, this time using www-data as my user. I'm not sure if any of these will work and I'm not too sure of which would be the best solutionNow the longer more detailed version:

I have a remote server running Ubuntu 10.04.2, in that server I have set up VirtualBox so I can run several instances of WinXP to perform different tasks. Everything is setup and I can manage the virtual machines through SSH. If I want to run them as a different user than the one that created them (a user that so far only has been used to create the Virtual Machines) I have to do sudo -u vboxuser.Now, I need to create a PHP script to manage these virtual machines (I know about phpVirtualBox, but it's not what I need). If I try to run the virtual machines using shell_exec() from php, I get no answer at all (And I have tested that shell_exec is working on my server).

Ubuntu Servers :: New User Shell - Tab Completion Does Not Work

Could not chdir to home directory /home/scaldwell: No such file or directory

Echo PS1 yields nothing. There is also nothing in /etc/skel. I didn't have to do anything special to get my initial user setup with the right prompt, and the second user has been added to the admin group as well. I have noticed that if I issue the command sudo chsh -s /bin/bash the account gets the correct prompt.

Ubuntu Security :: Testing Shell Codes In 10.10

Feb 9, 2011

I am learning exploit development and learning some stuff about shellcodes now! The shellcode is absolutely right and have tested it. I am using the following code...(created by me) to run my shellcode..

Code:
// #include<stdio.h> we will not be needing this as we are not using any functions from the C library...Just basic logic of Pointers..
char shellcode[] = "x31xc0xb0x01x31xdbxb3x07xcdx80"; // basic exit shellcode
int main()
{ int *ret; // a simple integer pointer pointing a address
ret = (int *)&ret + 2; // change the address pointed by
(*ret) = (int)shellcode; }

Compiling :-
Code:
aneesh@aneesh-laptop:~/articles/C$ gcc test.c -o test -fno-stack-protector
Compiling gives no errors as expected..

Now the problem I am facing is that As I run the program :-
Code:
aneesh@aneesh-laptop:~/articles/C$ ./test
Segmentation fault

Strace output :-
Code:
aneesh@aneesh-laptop:~/articles/C$ strace ./test
execve("./test", ["./test"], [/* 37 vars */]) = 0 .....
set_thread_area({entry_number:-1 -> 6, base_addr:0xb78016c0, limit:1048575, seg_32bit:1, contents:0, read_exec_only:0, limit_in_pages:1, seg_not_present:0, useable:1}) = 0
mprotect(0xf5e000, 8192, PROT_READ) = 0
mprotect(0x8049000, 4096, PROT_READ) = 0
mprotect(0x15c000, 4096, PROT_READ) = 0
munmap(0xb7802000, 81274) = 0
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
Segmentation fault

I have some feeling that its because the program has no access to the memory containing the shellcode (May be???)..

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Shares For Non-user Owned Folders?

What I'd like to do is share the Moodle main folder (and descendents) likewise. The problem is that it's owned by root. For ther user folders, as long as the owning user was logged in they were able to mark the folder as shared and everything worked very smoothly. When I try to mark the moodle folder as shared, no suprise I get a permission error. Is there a way of doing a "sudo su" from the GUI desktop to allow this to happen? Or do I have to set up the share from a command line (after having done a sudo su)? Can anyone give me the magic commands needed to do such?
