I have a computer running XP with a wireless Internet connection. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a second computer. I would like to connect my Ubuntu computer to the internet through a wired connection to the XP computer. As I am a newby to Linux commands could someone explain how to do this in laymans terms.
View 9 RepliesI am in college and live in a dorm room. As a dorm resident, I have access to only one wired network connection and I am not allowed to connect it to a router. My primary computer is multihomed and I was hoping I could share network access (eth1) through eth0 to a router. Then I want to hook up my secondary system to the router. I am not using the WAN port on the router. I believe this makes it act like a switch, which seems to be what I want.Here is my /etc/network/interfaces file on my primary computer

I was able to ping between the GW and a client on the LAN but couldn't access the internet from it. So I started to configure different things to get it to work which failed.
Now I can't ping between GW and the LAN. I tried to follow the same guide over again and even flushing the tables but still...

Note that I have REMOVED my wireless card in case there was some kind of hardware conflict or failure. I am using a wired connection through a Linksys WRT54G router that is supplying an Internet connection to another computer and an IP phone without any problem.
When I run the command network-admin (or select System > Administration > Network) I can see only 3 tabs (General, DNS and Hosts) It seems that the Connections tab has disappeared (and I believe this happened when I upgraded from Ubuntu 9/Karmic Koala). If I click Help it shows me that there should be 4 tabs, not 3.
The connection dropping began prior to my decision to upgrade. In fact it took several attempts to complete the upgrade. Should I attempt to re-install the upgrade? I am not sure how to do it without losing my connection. When I visit System > Administration > Update Manager, I am informed that my system is up to date.
I want to settup a proxy server who just redirect the internet connection to my second computer. I try Squid Proxy but its too complicated for me. Can you sugest me another more simple program to do what i want?

I tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 Maverick as dual boot on my laptop. However when xubuntu is on, I can't find a way to connect to internet. When I try the 2 arrows on the up-right corner the option for wireless is deemed. I tried offline/online, that did not work either. when I click the firefox It says you are not connected.

I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.
The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. The contents of ifconfig are:

If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.
How I can make this "link" with Ubuntu 10.04?

I have a problem with my internet connection. It is turning on and off all the time. I can maybe surf 3 sites without a problem then the internet goes really slow and after that I wont be able to surf at all. After a while it works fine. I can't even look on ..... videos because all of them stop at half or before. I have connected to my router through my cellphone and my ps3 and those two are working just fine.
I am running ubuntu 10.04 64bits. I don't know what network card my computer has.
I'm trying to get internet to my old server through a laptop. The laptop is running ubuntu 10.10 and the tower is running ubuntu server 10.10 X86.

My main computer is running Ubuntu while the other is Xubuntu.
When both comps are on, the internet works fine, but when my second computer is off, my main computer has super slow internet. Sometimes it takes 2 minutes and I get "This webpage is not available", and then I refresh that and it finally loads.
Why does it work when both comps are on? What could cause this?
Lately my computer, while connected to our router and using the internet, drags the connection speed of everyone in the house down tremendously, to the point of being unusable in many cases. Even buffering a ..... video causes tremendous lag across the network, making second-long load times stretch to a minute or more.
Now, our connection isn't the greatest, but ..... shouldn't cause that much lag, so I'm thinking there's something else at work. Is there some application I could use to monitor what programs on my computer are accessing the internet?
I'm not really a newbee in Linux but I am a newbee in networking. I have both a Ubuntu laptop and a Gentoo desktop computer. I have just bought me the MBR1000 Cradlepoint router and it works great with my Verizon USB 760 modem plugged in it. I can now send and receive email on my Ubuntu laptop. I like it.My Gentoo desktop computer is just sitting there with no Internet access because my Verizon modem is no longer plugged into it but plugged into the router instead. Only my laptop now has Internet access. The laptop has an integrated wireless card built in the MB but my desktop has no such capability.
Is there a way (besides buying a wi-fi adapter) to get Internet access on my desktop computer through networking so that the router would give both computers Internet access at the same? I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.
Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

My desktop computer, running 11.04 (fresh install) sometimes can't establish a wired Ethernet connection. Sometimes when I boot, it keeps trying to establish, but with no luck. Can the SFQ queue be used to divide bandwidth not only per connections but also per computer? E.g. if two computers download something each computer gets half of the bandwidth. I'm trying to do my own script based on wondershaper and would want to divide the bandwidth between all devices so that one device can't saturate the uplink.

But when im in windows xp i can surf and use the net. Is their a way to diagnose whats causing the problem. View 2 Replies View RelatedOS is Ubuntu 10.04. I have HomePNA-connection which is converted to Ethernet by Netsys NH-300 HomePNA-Ethernet adapter.
The problems that I have: Sometimes when I boot I don't get IP from DHCP. If try to ping any address I am told that host is unreachable. Sometimes this I can get IP by using command dhlient -r and dhclient to request new ip. Sometimes only way to get my connection to work is booting the computer.
Sometimes the connection works fine from the start but disconnects later for short time. Sometimes this happens every ten minutes, sometimes less often. If I wait for a while the connection might start working again, if not dhclient -r or reboot helps usually. But not always.
while my brother was browsing the web on my windows partition he had a blue screen pop up, one of the soft/hardware error ones, not a true BSOD, anyways, ever since my lan port on the computer seems to not be activiating as no wired connection is recognized. The lan port/card is directly attached to the Mother Board, it's a gigabyte motherboard in a self-build computer. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to troubleshoot this and see if it is truly a hardware problem or if its something else.

I'm using a mobile broadband for internet connection, with DynDNS wich updates the host with public IP-address.
I've managed to set up the connections and installed the needed packages. The problem appears when I connect to the VPN server through another computer;
When I get connected to the VPN server the remote computer recieves an IP-address from the server (xUbuntu) wich is great! But the server changes prefered network, from the mobile broadband to the wired network wich results in the remote computer losing it's connection to the server.
