Ubuntu Networking :: Control Internet Traffic Without Router?

I have a desktop, a laptop, & a wireless router. The router, unfortunately, doesn't support dd-wrt, tomato, etc firmware, but I would still like to prioritize voip/web browsing over bulk Internet traffic. I hope I can offload the router's missing QoS to my desktop.
Is it possible to have the laptop's connection go from the wall to the router to the desktop, where the desktop could perform the QoS of tomato, then continue on to the laptop? I'm a bit of a noob to networking (subnets?) but do well enough following good instructions.
As for the program that would do the QoS... Don't some Linux machines basically work as super-powered routers for businesses? So there must be some package but couldn't find one. The closest I got was wondershaper but it only shapes traffic for the computer on which it's installed; it might form part of the solution but falls short on its own. other devices should be able to access the Internet normally if the desktop is turned off, & work with other devices like a (jailbroken) iPod Touch.

I'm currently reading through the Linux Advanced Routing and Traffic Control HOWTO from lartc.org, and I'm wondering whether anyone knows of a file where I could keep qos rules persistent across a reboot, similar to /etc/sysconfig/iptables for netfilter. Should I just write my own script, or does something already exist?
By the way, iproute-2.6.29-4.fc12.i686.

I am looking for a solution for our LAN traffic monitoring and would like to use some opensource linux application. I have a linux box with two NIC cards and what I thought is the following: Our setup is as follows. Internet comes in through the router and into the firewall. From the firewall it goes into our switch and distributed among the workstations.
I have no access to the router or the firewall as they are centrally configured. I would like to place a device into the loop through which I could monitor the LAN traffic.
Can I put a linux box between the firewall and the switch and have all packets going through registered and logged? I have a proxy server (non transparent) and that captures some but not all. I would like to get all packets registered without interfering with the LAN etc.

In my "computer room" I have an ATT U-Verse TV decoder box and my computer connected to a Netgear Switch. The third port on the switch connects to the ATT router. I've just noticed that when I power on the U-Verse TV box I start getting a lot (200-250 KiB/s) of received packets on my Debian Lenny machine as shown in the System Monitor app. I don't show any outgoing traffic in response. That explains why the lights on the switch are blinking at the same rate for both devices. So, what, if anything, is this telling me? Is this normal, or is the ATT router spamming my Linux machine for some reason? Is this a potential problem?
Added: Or is this just telling me that the NetGear FS-105 is not actually an ethernet switch?

I am using Debian 5 and I have some networking experience, however I want to learn to do this the best way possible. I have a Debian box with two nics and I want to connect that to a switch and use my Debian box as a router basically, as well as having a firewall setup within that too.
Should I use iptables to set up nat or the route command or what? I just want to know the group of tools to use in order to set up my network. Network diagram: Internet <------> Debian Box <----> switch <----> hosts I found some guides but they are for linux 2.4 and i'm not sure if they are right.

We have something on our network that is reaking havoc with our content filter. I am trying to track it down, but so far I have been unsuccessful. We have approximately 500 devices in 100+ different locations spread across 9 states. Looking at each computer is not really feasible.
I need a machine that can sit in between our network and our internet connection and graphically monitor in real time and logs how much traffic each device is sending and receiving. It would need to sit inline so it has to have two nics and be able to pass traffic. The machine also needs to be transparent. Reconfiguration of our routers or workstations is not an option.
I have used ethereal and wireshark before. Ethereal may be a viable option, but wireshark seems to provide lots of information, but no practical way to make use of it. how to set up the box to be a transparent device on the network that will allow internet bound traffic to flow (freely)?

I am sharing my DSL internet connection using a modem+wireless router (single device) to 5 systems. I want all my internet traffic to go through one of the linux boxes in my network.
The problem here is that wireless devices connect directly to the modem+wireless router.
Is such routing of traffic possible??
PS: I am not sure if i could convey my situation clearly...

I have the standard wired LAN NIC and a wireless NIC installed. What my problem is, the wireless NIC will not take any internet traffic. The LAN connection gets it's internet from my LAPTOP with a Clear 4G module. I have a very strong wireless connection, but when I remove the LAPTOP from the network, I get nothing on my Ubuntu computer here, even though I have a solid connection. What is needed in the config to let the wireless run in the "back up" internet connection mode?

Is there a nice easy to use tool that displays (in KB/s) the internet traffic from every IP on a network?
Currently I'm using iptraf, but it's very hard to understand at times.

My PC is part of a LAN so while configuring eth0, we specify the Gateway to access all other resources in the network. The PC successfully access Internet through a proxy server configured in Mozilla(manual proxy config) but the update option or the Synaptic Pkg mngr are not able to access internet anyway. I have tried the option "Apply System Wide" in "Network Proxy" but no progress so far.
I also tried to forward all request coming for udp/tcp on port 80 to the proxyserver on a specific port, but with no success. Also I can't ping any website from terminal, reiterating the fact that I can access internet in firefox through the proxy on a specific port.

My ISP has given me 3 IP addresses to use for the internet (76.148.200.3, 76.148.200.4 and 76.148.200.5).
If I do a "wget whatismyip.com" or netcat into another server, I am appearing as 76.148.200.3.How do I change my route (command line) in linux to route internet traffic through 76.148.200.5?

I have eth0 and tun0. tun0 is a VPN tunnel going over eth0. Everything on the other end is setup and working fine, when I type Code: traceroute 4.2.2.1 I see my the ping is going over 192.168.2.99 (eth0). When I then type Code: route add -net 4.2.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.255 dev tun0 traceroute 4.2.2.1 I see ping is going over 10.8.0.1 (tun0) instead of eth0, so that is working
What does not work however is when I do Code: route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 dev tun0 traceroute 4.2.2.1 I get no ping! I believe the problem is because all traffic is routing over tun0, which means even the VPN tun0 needs to go through eth0, it can no longer do this. Is there a way around this where I can route everything except for 114.77.31.26 (which is my VPN gateway for tun0)?

I have a 2 machine LAN with both machines having an ethernet card and a wireless card. There is a Netgear router, both eth and WiFi, allowing both machines to access the internet.
On my Linux machine I am looking for some software that allows me to keep track of my broadband usage on that machine, excluding traffic between the two machines.
There are numerous such programmes for this in XP, which use Winpcap and a GUI frontend. The "other" machine on my LAN is XP and uses just such a program.

My internet gateway is 192.168.1.1 with a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask. I have a router connected to it running ddwrt with an ip 192.168.2.1/24 creating a second subnet behind it. I have a tenant moving in that will be wirelessly connecting to the ddwrt router, so to the 192.168.2.0/24 subnet. What I am looking for is a rule that will pass internet traffic to and from this client, but restrict him access from the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet otherwise. The ddwrt router is connected to the 192.168.1.1 gateway through its wan port, btw. For example, the client would get an ip address of 192.168.2.100 wirelessly from the ddwrt router. I want him to be able to surf the internet through the 192.168.1.1 gateway, but not to have any other access to the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet (ideally not have access to ANYTHING besides the internet).

Ubuntu system monitor applet doesn't show internet traffic although my wireless is working just fine. I use a conky to monitor bandwidth through vnstat and had no problem till I upgraded to maverick.

just installed Ubuntu Netbook remix on my acer aspire one, and come across a problem Ive never faced before. Im able to Connect to my router (and access it through the internal ip address) but as soon as i try access anything outside of my network there is nothing!
This i found odd as first i thought it might have just been my Routers problem, but seeing as all my other computers were connected to it with no problems (wired and wireless) I quickly traced the problem back to the laptop.
After this i decided to see if after a simple update would fix the problem. so i connected it up through the Ethernet port once again it connects to the router but no internet! I have tried everything in my knowledge, but with no success!

I am trying to set up a basic router. I am running ubuntu server 10.04(just installed it today!) I have a verizon aircard(mobile broadband card) that is connected via usb. I am using wvdial to "dial-up" the connection. This works just fine and gives me a device on ppp0. There is a single lan connection on eth0 set up as a static ip address under /etc/network/interfaces. I don't even have any firewall running yet. For whatever reason, I can only get out on the internet when eth0 is set to get its ip address through dhcp. When I set it up with a static ip, I get for example:
$ping 4.2.2.2
From 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable.
$ping google.com
ping: unknown host google.com
If, however, after I have booted and the wvdial has been started, I set up eth0 as dhcp, run /etc/init.d/networking restart, set it back as static, run /etc/init.d/networking restart again, all work well. When I reboot the system with the static ip on eth0, and connect to wvdial, I get no internet again.

My internet works fine if I plug directly into the modem, but if I go through the router either using ethernet or wireless it doesn't work. I can access the router perfectly when using wireless and change settings and all that but cant access the internet. From what I've read it isn't a DNS issue because I cant get a result from pinging an ip, so I think it may be something firewall related but I'm unsure.

My router is a Netgear router with Comcast, and after going on Ubuntu for a couple hours just doing normal things, the Internet disconnects. Then I have to restart my computer and start everything over again. I check the router and everything seems to be fine, I even unplug everything on the router first (like I am instructed to do so if this sort of thing happens) to make sure that's not what is causing the problem. It has to be the Ubuntu system.

I am dual booting XP and Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6410 and I have a Linksys WRT120N router connected to my Modem.
So the weird thing is, under XP I can use the internet while connected to my router. Under Ubuntu I can't use the internet while connected to my router. But I can use the internet in Ubuntu if I connect to my neighbor's router called "linksys". So something happens when I connect to my router that makes Ubuntu not able to access the internet. But if I'm connected to my Neighbors router or if I use XP while connected to my router I can use the internet.
I have been using Ubuntu for about a year, so I'm getting better but still a noob. I've tried to figure out what's going on by looking at other forums and posts and trying to see if anyone has solved this. So far I've had no luck. This is also the first of many problem I have encountered that I have been unable to solve using online posts, and is the first problem that I have had to resorted to creating a post to try and fix.

I'm running a Natty machine wired to a TP-Link router (TL-WR841N) with additional Ubuntu and Windows machine on WiFi. Recently I've had some problems with connectivity on the Natty machine. Connectivity is fine as far as the router, but not beyond it. This applies to all browsers, Software Center, Aptitude and anything else you can think of. Now, normally at this point I would call my ISP, but the thing is, all other machines have connectivity. I've checked the cables twice and anyway, if it were them, I wouldn't be able to ping the router. Router has ping functionality to outside and it's working, have tried ubuntu.com and google.com. Also, connectivity between the wired and wireless machines is fine, pings are flying across the network beautifully.

I am currently setting up a old box to serve as a general, quality router/fileserver that should give me fine control over my network traffic. This router will serve as the bridge between several local users and the Internet, along with quite a few machines.Traffic is expected to be heavy, in the sense of multiple powerusers using the Internet to the fullest, not from one machine doing anything insane like Torrenting. The connection profile will reflects lots of up and down, not necessarily a huge number of persistent connections.Due to security concerns, the need to build an encrypted tunnel between a SoHo LAN and a dedicated server is unescapable. I'm trying to determine whether I can pull this off with a simple SSH tunnel on the box serving as the local router, or if a VPN (either PPTP or L2TP) is a more appropriate solution.Proxying won't work, because not all apps can easily be socksified across the Windows, GNU/Linux, and OSX platforms that the users will need. For this reason, I have to pull this off strictly at the router level.
I'm not all that familiar with the specific details of each protocol's performance as far as their latency, efficiency, overhead, and fault-tolerance are concerned. I'm less concerned with a protocol taking up CPU as I am with useless bytes and latency it might be introducing to the link. I don't know the low-level nitty gritty of how each protocol encapsulates its traffic.If there is an existing package for this, it would be great, but at this point I'm simply trying to figure out which protocol is more appropriate before I begin digging in the wrong direction. The biggest concern, of course, is that the chosen protocol aggressively re-establish sessions should the connection suddenly drop, which will be a concern given the SoHo line I'll have to work with. The actual outbound server is no concern, as it has four cores and a Gbps line.
