My KDE scrn-saver box to, Start automatically after 1 minute is left un-checked and my power mangement options are set to, Do nothing when idle, but every ten minutes my screen powers down?

View 2 Replies View RelatedRight after a fresh install I went into terminal b4 logging into gnome and after about 10 minutes the screen goes black. I can wiggle the mouse or touch the keyboard and it goes away. I play games with a controller and since I'm not touching the mouse or keyboard this happens every 10 minutes or so. I went into gnome and put screen saver to 2 hours and not to happen when idle but this didn't make it stop. I reinstalled again and it still happens.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did this on my new Ubuntu 9.10 system - the icon look like a PC screen with a padlock on it. Hover over says "Protect your computer from unauthorized use." and activates the screen saver/screen lock. I have no idea how I added it to the Gnome panel and I am wanting to do the same on a new PC. I have not had any luck searching - if I knew what to call what I am searching for I would probably remember how to do it

The value could then be periodicaly tested within a "cron" script. If screen saver was running then a "skill" could then be called to force a complete logout releasing the terminal for another student.

Since the download starts at 2 AM i used to leave my system ON. I would like to know if the download will automatically start from the login screen itself.(That is suppose i switch ON the system at 2 AM and never bother to login to my account.)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently loaded Ubuntu 9.10 which runs perfectly, except for the power management system.I go into the GUI power management screen and tell it to use the screen-saver after ten minutes, but NEVER suspend/ hibernate but it suspends/hibernates anyway,sometimes after an hour, sometimes hours later.Is it possible to keep the screen-saver but disable the rest of the power management system?

I find all the "GUI" ways to do it through Gnome and KDE but I'm not using either...I have an EEE PC set to boot up automatically to openbox and want Firefox to start after that in a full screen openbox window.I've tried adding the firefox command to ~/.initrc but it won't execute. I tried the command in .profile. This brings up firefox on a black screen without openbox.Firefox comes up fine when executed from the openbox menu.

I setup the conky under fvwm session for my Opensuse 11 but it won't start automatically. I am wondering how to write some kind of scripts to force it to start automatically and with a delay about 10 seconds after fvwm starts.
I just updated to Natty yesterday and I went straight into burg no problem, but from that point Ubuntu takes anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to boot. I literally have to leave the room and go do other things while waiting. So, today I did a complete fresh install and it is on ssd with plenty of space, go straight to grub no problems. Windows 7 will boot at its normal speed, but Ubuntu just sits with a purple screen for anywhere to 5-10 minutes after grub menu. I have reinstalled two more times and still same issue, holding down and tapping shift key did make it boot one time in about a minute and a half (usual time in 10.10 on my machine is about 12 seconds). I don't think it is a graphics issue but I am running an ATI card.

When the screen is idle for a long time, more than 1 hour, I get a black screen with the mouse arrow but nothing else. the mouse moves the cursor and Ctl+Alt+F1 does work. How to fix this problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been a Linux user for years but just recently I decided to take the plunge and use Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS (with Windows on the side for any games that don't run well in CrossOver Games).
Anyway, one thing I was curious about was whether or not I could get some of my Windows screen savers to work on Linux. Specifically I had been using "Blue Screen", a cute little ss made by SysInternals that emulates various versions of Windows BSODs.
The file comes as a .scr file (like all Windows screen savers). I wanted to know if there was any program that converted .scr files into Linux compatable screen savers. If not, that's still OK as I've now been rocking "Electric Sheep"!
I'm running Ubuntu Linux 8.10 on a HP DV9000 with an 1.7GHz Intel Centrino Duo processor, 2GB ram, and an nVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card.
This just started happening recently on an older install of Linux Mint 9, 32 bit, Gnome with Compiz using a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse.
I noticed another problem about the same time and I don't know if it is related but now when I restart I get the "default keyring login" pop up message. The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive for at least 60-90 seconds after everything has opened. It only recently started to do this and is not a result of old/slower hardware.
I don't know where to start looking for a cause or what section to post this in.
What happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.
It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.
I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).
However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.
When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.
It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.
I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.
I've just installed a fresh copy of 11.4 and the updates are driving me crazy. My internet connection is up, but the download stops and goes, and when I try using firefox, it takes a minute to even start to load any page. I have the system monitor up and it is telling me that the network is not receiving anything except for these bursts of data aprox. every 30 seconds.

When I try to boot or install from it, the screen shows the "ubuntu" with the red dots for a minute and then a black screen with no action from the hard drive or the CD drive. I think it should be asking what language I want but presing enter does nothing.I have been using Ubuntu since 2006 and after yesterday's repartition I installed 6.06 from a live CD so I know I can install from a CD.

However, on battery power the screen goes blank.I have read a number of threads on this topic and have made changes to power management settings (On Battery Power mirroring On Mains Power)and Compiz Settings|General|Unredirect Fullscreen Windows enabled, with no success.This also occurred when running 9.10. Not sure if it is a bug or incorrect settings.

The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.
These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.
I have to unlock the computer when the screen saver activates, How do I override the need to login. I just want to be able to move my mouse or hit a key on the keyboard to get out of the screen saver?
