View 1 RepliesI have a Dell inspiron 640m (1405). I am a reasonably clued in linux user, but I am getting serious networking speed problems. The networking card is an intel 3945ABG When wirelessly connecting with windows XP, everything runs fine and the network connection is fast.
When connecting with any linux distro, the networking speed is abysmally slow, and the connection drops randomly. (the network is recognised and the connection is made however)
I am just checking in I know a lil about linux looking to learn more I know forums are the best way to go. I recently installed centos 5.3 on a machine we are going to be using as a squid server. Just a couple quick ?s and just wanted to pick your alls brains. What I am trying to do with the server is use it for caching to speed up our network t but I don't want to go around to all the our customers to setup their browser for proxy. What all is involved with making this server completely transparent. So the end user will does not need to enter in proxy information.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there any method of selecting a network speed on my set up? It is capable of running at 100mb/sec but have the feeling that it isn't. Plug in vista on a lap top and no problems at all. It's also noticeably quicker. I assume that a straight install does set up bi directional and 100mb/sec?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm facing an odd problem with a fresh install of OpenSuse 11.4 on a Dell PE-2950, using NIC Broadcom BCM5708C (rev 12) NetXtream II. Driver's are up to date. I'd installed vsftpd and configure it. I can connect from anywhere in the network where I setup this Server. The odd problem is that when I'm sending a big file (5.5 GiB for example), from another PE-2950 server (Windows Server 2003 64 bits R2) with another BCM5708C nic, the speed of the transfer starts at 90 MiB/s approx. but after 30 seconds , it drops to 15 MiB/s and never raise again. Driver's are up to date too.
However, from another Server in the network, a Dell R710 with SLES 10 SP3, the transfer speed is at 90-100-110 MiB/s all the time. The switch is a HP Procurve 2910al-24G, with all ports at gigabit speed. I'd tried with different FTP clients in Windows: WinSCP and the Windows's ftp client, but the result is the same: speed falls down after 30 seconds approx. using the Windows-Box.
I just noticed that files are transferring between my two computers at no more than 11.3Mb/s no matter what I do.
I regularly use sshfs to mount a drive on my main computer. But after noticing a dismal speed of 10Mb/s when copying a file, I thought maybe sshfs is slow. So I tried scp, and I'm getting 11.3Mb/s with scp. Using the blowfish cypher gave me no change to this, still exactly 11.3Mb/s.
I have a Gigabit network except for the cable, which is a 10meter, 100Mb/s cable.
I have a custom modified sysctl.conf file which I'll post here if needed.
Is there anything I can do about this pathetic speed ? Maybe a modification to my ssh config ? sysctl ? anything ?
I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox, opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network

I have just formated and did a fresh install to start all over. I installed Ubuntu 9.1 and everything went fine but the network. The computer serve as a NAS and MediaPlayer. When getting a file from the server, I get a speed of 40-60mb/sec, which are good for a Gigabit network. When I try to put a file in, the speed can't pass more than 1mb/sec and often stop.
Here's the network info:
Code:
vric@XBMC:~$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:24:8c:a1:eb:55
inet addr:192.168.1.5 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Edit: Looks like it's a Gigabit Problem. I connected the Ubuntu box to my Linksys router which is 10/100 and everything is MUCH faster.
Any command line tool to measure the network speed between my two linux servers without taking disk speed into account? My network is supposed to be 100Mb, but it doesn't feel like that so I wonder where the bottleneck is. The numbers that I see doesn't correlate well to that. So I'd like to know the speed network card to network card.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWith three 1.5TB, 7200RPM drives in RAID0, they thrash. And yet the network out, 4 gigabit ports LAG'd together to create a single 4 gigabit connection, can't even push a single gigabit a second.
Here's what I've done so far:
I've enabled jumbo frames on the bond: ifconfig bond0 mtu 9000
Tweaked SAMBA performance:
Tweaked hdparm:
I haven't enabled jumbo frames on the switch but I'm almost sure that won't help me much after trying all this.
I'm running out of ideas here guys. The clients connected are pulling down images in both Ghost and WIM (ImageX) format. Large files too, upwards of 12 gigabytes.
how to view my network connection speed. EG: 10/100/100 mbit. I searched and searched with no luck, I tried ethtool as well as mii-tool.

Transfer rate to the server is approx 100 KB/s

If I mount it from Places>connect to server. Both to and from speeds are 16 MB/s. Why is it so slow when mounted through fstab?
I have this new flatmate who uses all my Internet data up before the end of my monthly clockover. Instead of having to buy heaps of data top-ups at the end of the month, is there a way I can limit the speed of his computer through the network? I have tried looking through my router settings (which is a Thomson router) but there doesn't seem to be any options in regards to limiting activity of a system on the network.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was a user of openSUSE 10.3. I used to get a decent speed in BitTorrent (using KTorrent 2.2.1) there, since I had earlier used Windows and the speed wasn't as good, even in Windows 7. Recently, I installed openSUSE 11.2 and found that I wasn't getting the good speeds in KTorrent. The overall performance was a fraction of what I used to get in the older Linux installation.
I decided to verify whether my suspicions were justified by again reinstalling openSUSE 10.3. When I did this, I was again able to get the great performance I used to get always with openSUSE 10.3 running KTorrent 2.2.1 I don't know what causes this, but I know that this sad thing really has happened. A newer version is actually not worth it! I hope my voice reaches the openSUSE developers and such bad incidences don't occur anymore.
I have a linux debian on a network connected to a router through a ethernet cord. My linux is hogging the network speed and the users of the other computers on the network aren't very happy. Is there a way to limit the download speed on only my computer?

I have problems with my network speed when i ping my proxy server I end up getting a high packet loss generally more than 30%.I have tried to use various network monitoring softwares like etherape, wireshark, tcpdump but I am not able to get to the bottom of the problem.basically I am trying to find out where the lost packets are going.

I tried all of them, and none reliably worked. Every solution which required re-association wtih the AP helped for some time, but nothing helped for long. First, don't let yourself fool by the disable IPv6 trap - while it is "enabled" it is acutally not used by Lucid! I have a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 Laptop with Broadcom STA driver: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03) However I can reliably stabilize my connection for some time either by manually disabling WiFi with the hardware switch or disabling WiFi by software means and re-activating. This brings speed at par with Kubuntu 9.10 until some time. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?
probably this is the most idiotic question and probably i know the answer. But I want to get confirmed. Is it anyway possible that my mobile broadband speed is slow because of my installation is wrong? actually, I formatted my machine and make it dual-boot. After that my mobile-broadband speed is horrible slow. I installed (a)kmod-wl and as dependency, broadcom-wl but my lspci only shows intel network manager.
Code:
$ lspci|grep Network
17:03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 008a (rev 34)
can this be related or just coincidence?
I installed dnsmasq to speed up dns querry for my network. i didn't really change any thing in my dnsmasq.conf file. i only just put my upstream dns addresses in resolv.conf. i have dchp running and configured to issue the ip address of the system running dnsmasq as dns ip to the dhcp clients. But i have noticed that if i do ipconfig /all on my windows clients, instead of the dnsmasq server ip showing, i still see the dns ip of my upstream provider. by this, iam assuming that the client are not using the cache even though the service is running on the server.

I've tried with different cables on the server, no luck. Also note that the laptop gets full speed to speedtest.net as per my internet subscription (75/75 gbit fiber), so the laptop can be ruled out as a problem since it gets more than 75X performance to the internet compared to the local server.

I upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 last night in response to a pop up window. When I rebooted after the upgrade my wife immediately complained about the internet not working. Actually the connection up was working but Fedora 11 upgrade had made it slow almost to a stop There are two XP machines the network behind a local D-Link wireless router with Comcast high speed internet. When I disable networking on the Fedora machine the internet connection immediately returns to normal on the other two machines. Also there is a second or two period after enabling networking for a quick upload or download before the connection clogs.I checked the system monitor network history and found that there is a constant networking send rate of just under 180 kb/s in the background. This occurs even when the browser, email client, and automatic backup are off and the only process showing significant CPU use in the system monitor is the monitor itself.
I tried netstat but there were so many /tmp/orbit entries that I could not scroll up to the top of the listing. Is this normal. If so, does anyone know the netstat command options to just see connections with sent packets. I also tried ifconfig -a. This shows no Rx packets at all, and no TX packets except on eth0, The total etho TX packets matches t,he reported by the system monitor, and in the monitor you can watch the total accumulate in approx 180 kb/sec increments. I don't understand why 180kb/sec TX would make a dramatic difference in internet network internet speed. Comcast reports upload speeds in megabytes. I need to be able to use the net in Federa, but I am also curious to learn what is the caused the problem.
i both have the same problem, i'm trying to burn my images at 4 or 8 speed, but ubuntu 10.04 says that the hardware does not support that kind of speed and switch up to 16 speed and more. i know it can burn at low speeds, at least in windows, it is a bit strange that fast burning is okee, and slow not, what can i do to prevent this? i don't wanna burn to much errors on my discs
