OpenSUSE Network :: Bad Download Speed In 11.2 When Compared To 10.3
Mar 31, 2010
I was a user of openSUSE 10.3. I used to get a decent speed in BitTorrent (using KTorrent 2.2.1) there, since I had earlier used Windows and the speed wasn't as good, even in Windows 7. Recently, I installed openSUSE 11.2 and found that I wasn't getting the good speeds in KTorrent. The overall performance was a fraction of what I used to get in the older Linux installation.
I decided to verify whether my suspicions were justified by again reinstalling openSUSE 10.3. When I did this, I was again able to get the great performance I used to get always with openSUSE 10.3 running KTorrent 2.2.1 I don't know what causes this, but I know that this sad thing really has happened. A newer version is actually not worth it! I hope my voice reaches the openSUSE developers and such bad incidences don't occur anymore.

I have installed Wubi (Ubuntu 10.10) recently. It takes more time to boot than Windows. But my main concern is that my browsing speed is much slower compared to that on Windows 7. How can this be resolved?

Is there any method of selecting a network speed on my set up? It is capable of running at 100mb/sec but have the feeling that it isn't. Plug in vista on a lap top and no problems at all. It's also noticeably quicker. I assume that a straight install does set up bi directional and 100mb/sec?

I'm facing an odd problem with a fresh install of OpenSuse 11.4 on a Dell PE-2950, using NIC Broadcom BCM5708C (rev 12) NetXtream II. Driver's are up to date. I'd installed vsftpd and configure it. I can connect from anywhere in the network where I setup this Server. The odd problem is that when I'm sending a big file (5.5 GiB for example), from another PE-2950 server (Windows Server 2003 64 bits R2) with another BCM5708C nic, the speed of the transfer starts at 90 MiB/s approx. but after 30 seconds , it drops to 15 MiB/s and never raise again. Driver's are up to date too.
However, from another Server in the network, a Dell R710 with SLES 10 SP3, the transfer speed is at 90-100-110 MiB/s all the time. The switch is a HP Procurve 2910al-24G, with all ports at gigabit speed. I'd tried with different FTP clients in Windows: WinSCP and the Windows's ftp client, but the result is the same: speed falls down after 30 seconds approx. using the Windows-Box.

Does anyone know how to revert network speeds to those attained with openSUSE11.2-64? On openSUSE11.2-64 the reported network download speed was,
max : 420 kB/s
ave : ~ 200 kB/s
After upgrade to openSUSE 11.3-64 the figures dropped to about 25% of the previous values. After upgrade to KDE 4.5 and plasmoid-networkmanagement the initial values did not change but the average value dropped after about 30 seconds to ~ 15 kB/s. Approach so far:
1. The motherboard's (A780GM-LE) build in LAN (Realtek RLT8111DL) was originally detected by openSUSE 11.3 as the Realtek RLT8169 and kernel module r8169 installed. This was replaced by the latest module r8168-8.019.00 from Realtek.
2. After kernel update to Linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64 the plasmoid-networkmanagement was replace by NetworkManager-kde4. This improved flow with,
max : 140 kB/s
ave : ~ 80 kB/s

I have two ubuntu boxes. One is a 9.04 desktop edition and the other is a 9.10 server edition I am working on some code that needs to be highly tolerant of bad network connections. It sends transactions to a central database, but when the network is not available, it caches them locally to retry later.
I have the code working beautifully on my desktop box. but when I test it on this other box (the one running server edition) there is a HUGE DELAY every time it tries and fails to send a transaction to the database when the network is down.
I tested a little further, and I found that if i unplug my network cable and run ping somehost on the desktop, it fails instantly saying "ping: unknown host somehost" But if I unplug the cable on the server box and run the same ping command it lingers for about 40 seconds before the ping fails.
Does anybody have any idea why this might be happening? Is this a 9.04 vs 9.10 difference? Is this a desktop vs server difference? Is there some package I can install, or some config setting I can change that will make the server box insta-fail just like the desktop does?

I have the problems with transfer speed between samba and Windows XP clients.
Samba server configuration:
Quad Core 6600 CPU.
4 Gb RAM
OpenSUSE 11.2 with kernel "2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop"
Samba - samba-3.5.1-1.1.i586
Test: 4 GB File copying. One file.
Transfer speed from Samba Server to Windows 7 and XP clients:
(Windows clients copy file from Server share -> to local drive)
From Server to Windows 7 client 1:
85-90 Mb/sec
From Server to Windows 7 client 2:
90-100 Mb/sec
From Server to XP1 client 3
75-100 Mb/sec
Transfer speed from Windows 7 and XP clients TO Samba Server:
(client copy file from local drive -> to server Share)
From Server to Windows 7 client 1:
12-20 Mb/sec
From Server to Windows 7 client 2:
30-35 Mb/sec
From Server to Windows XP client 1
20-27 Mb/sec
(Copying file from Windows local drive to Windows remote share)
From Window 7 client 1 TO Windows XP client 1
40-50 Mb/sec
From Window 7 client 2 TO Windows XP client 1
50-60 Mb/sec
Copying file from Windows 7 client 2 share -> TO Windows XP client 1 show me 100-120 Mb/sec speed permanent.
Copying file from Linux hosts to NFS server is stable 50-90
Mb/sec bidirectional.
This part of my smb.conf file
Code:
# version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SUSE if the
# samba-doc package is installed.
# Date: 2009-10-27
[global]
log level = 1
debug level = 0
max log size = 50 .....
I have very slow write speed when copying file from Windows clients to Samba Share. Samba speed is slower than Windows native clients connections ?

I've noticed since switching from Kubuntu 10.04 to openSUSE 11.3 on my laptop that the Adobe Flash plugin seems much more prone to crash and fullscreen video playback (e.g. Hulu) performs terribly. I can't figure out what's different between the distros. In both cases, I'm using a 64-bit OS, Firefox and KDE, and the proprietary NVIDIA driver. Anyone know what might be happening, or more importantly, how to improve Flash stability and performance on 64-bit openSUSE?

first of all im new to OpenSuse i have been using different distros since early 90's if theres one i havent tried i would be very surprised anyway im very picky when it comes to sound and picture maybe its the fact that im a developer and also art director anyhoo i got tired of my HTPC ( windows ) i thought linux has to be able to do it just as well i mean i only use it for movies and music but was surprised to see how video works in linux picture is somewhat ok compared to Windows but movement is another story even vsync off it looks like a old VHS tape when it should be DVD. Cam-panning is even worse. How is this and can it be fixed?

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Search domain: 192.168.1.128

But i i select that address get i on (network Icon)
Ip address: 192.168.1.225
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Domain: from 192.168.1.129 to 192.168.1.250
And i don't get Internet or can upgrade opensuse?
It is because i use windows 7 that (Porting web) between routes? (Other computer).
I use windows (Main system) with the same settings and i get Internet.
So it can be compatibilty issue? Or need linux also need to change other things?
I have tried this both with 2 computer without Internet access.
I have before Mandriva 2010 Free and Kubuntu 10.10 that work with that settings.
But I want KDE 4.6 so i upgraded to opensuse.

I have a 18Mg download speed internet connection and surfing the web is supper fast, streaming video is decent, etc. when I go to download a file 100 mg or so really anything my download speed will clime to about 1.3mg and then start dropping and level off at about 32 kb or lower. if I pause and restart the download it will jump back up again for a while and then come back down. if i constantly pause and restart the file will download in roughly the same amount of time as if the connection was working properly.

Ubuntu version 10.04. until day before yesterday, everything is working fine but now specific problem arises that is my internet download become 1/4th than usual.
Heres the story: i have internet (LAN) connection of 512 kbps. when i tries to download anything, using (syneptic, firefox default downloader, jdownloader) the download speed i get is 10-20 kb/s which should be 50-60 kb/s. the limited downloading speed is only when i tried to download a file; browsing n online video content play at max. speed i.e. 50-60 kb/s. i m using net speed panel applet to monitor current net speed.
Here is something unexpected: during downloading, when i start a game(openTTD or battle of wesnoth), downloading speed accelerated to max. (50-60 kb/s) but when i close the game, it drop back to 10-20 kb/s. so definitely this isn't the problem with the net.

I have used Ubuntu and Linux Mint for quite some time now until I got a new machine. Some friends told me to try OpenSUSE because it has really been polished over the last few years.Install went smoothly got everything working properly except for my video card. My video card is an ATI HD4890 with sound support over HDMI. I had the sound working in Ubuntu using the non-oss ATI drivers. I was wondering if someone could please teach me how to install them again here on OpenSUSE 11.3. My screen fonts and colors also look terrible compared to Windows or Ubuntu.
Is there a way I can make it look better? I remember CCC (Catalyst Control Center for ATI) had two color formats (RGB and YCbCr). I had to set it to YCbCr because my screen is an HDTV and it looked much cleaner than RGB. Is there a way I can acheive similar results with OpenSUSE?

I just got OpenSUSE 11.4 to work on my Gateway NV79. However, I can't get the built-in software updater to download anything. When I click on the updater it starts and begins and appears to be working, but it doesn't do anything. I check the system monitor and it says the updater is sleeping. I can't get the updater to continue.
I'm using a wireless connection. On 64-bit OpenSUSE 11.4 Gnome.

I am using debian(lenny) on a pc coexisting with windows. I use grub to decide which o/s to boot.
I picked debian, logged in as a regular user. I selected "Administration" under the "System" tab and then selected "Update Manager". I had to provide the root password.
I was asked to insert Binary DVD-1 and was told to use smart update. I did at which time 16 files begun downloading at between 4400 B/s and 4800 B/s from the Security server. It looks like it is downloading a new linux image.
Is there any way to speed this up?

I am having problems with download speeds in Ubuntu 9.10. Downloads start at a healthy speed and then drop to almost zero. This affects apt-get install, Pan newsreader etc. With apt-get install if I terminate the download (with [Ctl][C]) and restart it I get another burst at high speed then again back to almost nothing. It makes updates a nightmare. With Pan newsreader I get high speed for most files but when downloading some of the larger files the speed drops right back to almost nothing after a while. I am on wired ethernet (no wireless). Typically I will get about 1.1MB before the speed drops - although I think it may be a function of time rather than data. I am talking to my ISP via a Netgear FWAG114 router and a NetComm NB5 ADSL modem operating in bridge mode. Although a number of users appear to have experienced very similar symptoms here I haven't found an answer that works.

i realised that although before when i had windows7 my relative download speed was around 5.0 MB/s ( i have a 50MB virgin connection)now with ubuntu 10.10 im limited to only 2.8MB/s or somewhere around there.
First i tested my wireless speed on another laptop (with windows 7) on the same network and the speed was as i said around 5.0MB/s sometimes even more. So i thought it was only chrome that i was using at that point. However, this download speed limitation appears in jdownloader as well as in firefox and i guess the whole system.
SO im wondering if there is any way to set up the speed limit on the system and if there is, how should do i go ahead with this change, through the terminal or through preferences?
