I have a netbook with a tiny hard drive, and an external drive to go with it. It's running Ubuntu. I want to be able to install some packages to that external hard drive, so that when the hard drive is not plugged in the netbook still functions, just with out some functionality. It doesn't have to be this way exactly, I just want the effect of offloading some of my installed libraries and programs onto the portable hard drive. In other words, just mounting some directories from the external drive wont work because I at least need some basic programs to run normally.
Here are some things I was thinking about but wasn't able to find enough information to actually understand if they are feasible, or how to go about doing them.
Can I do something like this if I use the --root=/media/external switch of dpkg install and then add /media/external/ to my system path?
What if I create some kind of wrapper for dpkg that will install the package into an alternate root (--root=/media/external) and then create a symlink in the internal file system to every file that was just installed on the external file system?
How about something where I chroot into the external drive?
How about something using LVM?
i installed many software and games from sudo apt-get install <name> i just want to know can we save the setup of the games or softwares downloaded this way?

I used the graphical install and when it came to the part about partitioning, I created a new /home partition "hdb1" and told the installer to ignore my old /home partition "/dev/hda9".Following the completion of the install, I logged in and changed my /etc/fstab so that /home --> my old /home partition "/dev/hda9". I then mounted the old partition to /home and rebooted the system. Now, when I go to my /home directory >> properties, I can see that the files I had are on the drive (2GB are used) --- but --- I cannot actually see the files??

I'm working on a Soekris net4801 that is running an unknown distro of Linux. The kernel is 2.4.29, and iptables is v1.3.4.
I can't work out how to save the iptables. I searched the whole system for files/folders containing the name "iptables" and got 3 results:
/user/local/lib/iptables
/sbin/iptables
/lib/iptables
I've tried iptables save, iptables-save and iptables save active.
"iptables save" and "iptables save active" give me an invalid argument error. "iptables-save" isn't a valid command. "iptables --help" gives me a list of valid switches, none of which have to do with saving.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with Windows7.My ext3 /home is mounted as F: in windows.I share a firefox profile between them so that when i am in Windows my firefox uses the same profile as it does when in Ubuntu.It all worked great until recently. I am unable to save files by right clicking and save as. In the config i am unable to set a directory to save to. It neer asks me where to save to. Just nothing happens. some off my book marks are all messed up as well, my rss feeds have the same post on some random website every time i log on and i have to manually refresh to get the correct feeds back. I am unable to delete the random bookmark.

Under upload's and download's I have identical category subfolders like mp3's, movies, software etc. in both.
