General :: Rsync Still Copies With Ignore Existing Option

Jul 1, 2010

I'm trying to set up rsync to only copy new songs from my computer to another. I'm using the "--ignore-existing" argument, but it appears to copy all files anyway. The client (source) is Windows 7 64-bit running DeltaCopy Client and the server (destination) is Synology DS410 (running rsyncd).

Here is the syntax:

General :: Rsync With Scp - Copies Everything - All Files

Jul 12, 2011

rsync -r -v -e ssh root@nn.nn.nn.nn:/usr/local/websites/* /usr/local/websites and each time I run it it copies everything - all files. I thought rsync was only supposed to copy files that had been added or modified.

General :: Make Rsync Ignore Directory Structure?

Apr 19, 2011

Is there a way to force rsync to not make directories in its destination directory; ie, to simply dump all of the files from the source directory directly into the destination without copying any of the folders that the files were originally in? I tried --no-dirs, but that seems to only be for empty directories.

Server :: Making Incremental Copies/transfers With Rsync In Cygwin?

Mar 21, 2011

As an example, I have two servers, sm-i222 and fileserv. sm-i222 is a Win2k3 system running cygwin. fileserv is a linux box running RHEL 4.7. sm-i222 maps /cygdrive/c to the c: drive and /cygdrive/d maps to the d: drive(actually a single 4TB RAID). from the sm-i222 server /cygdrive/c I call a small script from the crontab. The internal IP for fileserv is 10.0.0.7. See below.

cd /cygdrive/d/fileserv/home
rm -rf /cygdrive/d/fileserv/home/*
rsync -avz -e 'ssh -c blowfish' root@10.0.0.7:/home/* .

These three lines perform well in that they make a full transfer of the fileserv:/home/ directory on fileserv to the appropriate place on sm-i222 using rsync. I use rsync instead of scp because I have to traverse subdirectories and symbolic links in the /home/... filesystem on fileserv. What I'm looking to do is use rsync to do an incremental transfer/backup of only the files that have changed since the last full backup. I'll manage the times I do this manually or in crontab. A colleague says this is do-able, but not how. Rsync.org says this is do-able but not how. Cygwin says this is do-able... see rsync.org. I believe what I'm looking for is a single rsync line like I have above that only transfers the changed files on fileserv to sm-i222.

Ubuntu :: Existing Rsync Running And Copying Info To Hard Drive?

Nov 30, 2010

I have a home network that includes a couple of computers {A, B, C, D}. currently, I have a cron jon that runs every minute and updates (using rsync) the hard drives of computers {B, C, D} with the contents of hard drive {A}. So far everything works great, as hard drive {A} barely has any information on it. Now, I am about to copy a lot of information (about 8 GBs) to hard drive {A}. Naturally, the cron job will run (as it runs every 1-min) and try to 'sync' the contents with hard drives {B, C, D}.

Given my network (100Mbit/sec), there is no way the cron job will be able to 'copy' the contents to hard drives {B, C, D} in one minute. It will take much more time. Does this situation create a problem? meaning, will cron re-run a new rsync instance 1min later, even though an existing rsync process is running and still copying information to hard drives {B,C,D}? Will my backups be hurt / slowed down tremendously because of this?

Ubuntu :: Sync Script - Delete Option In Rsync?

Jul 18, 2010

wrote a script to sync my netbook music with my server music and everything was fine.but if for some reason lets say i run it accidently and i'm not connected to my network, i just wiped my netbook music .here's what i got so far:

Code:
Sudo mkdir /media/ServerMusic/
mount -t cifs -o user=Justin,password=****** //192.168.1.108/Public-3/Music/ /media/ServerMusic/[code]....

i need to have the --delete option in rsync (say i sync it and realize i hate some music, when i delete it from the server i don't want it still on the netbook.i want an if statement in here somehow, but i'm not sure how to do it.something like, the first command in the script should be a ping test, if ping doesn't work end the script, if ping does work continue or if the server music gets mounted to the created directory continue, if the mount failed, or even in the mounted folder is empty stop the script

what can i do here to ensure i can keep the --delete and not have to worry about losing my music if the mount fails?

Server :: Rsync Log Format Option (--link-dest)?

Apr 1, 2010

I'm running rsync and outputting the log to a file using --log-file option. I am also using the --link-dest option, which in turn is adding the hard link creation output for EVERY file in the log file. I want to ONLY show the actual file transfer (if any) that take place.

In the 'log format' section of rsyncd man page here I assume you can do this, I just can't make sence about the code. If someone has better experience with reading it, can you please assist ?

Server :: Rsync "skipping Non-regular Files" With Archive Option?

Apr 29, 2010

According to the man page, rsync should copy "special" and "device" files if the corresponding options are set. Also the man page says that the -a option (--archive) includes the -D option, which is "same as --devices and --specials". BUT We use the -a option, and still get the following in our report:

skipping non-regular file "pristine/dev/full"
skipping non-regular file "pristine/dev/null"
skipping non-regular file "pristine/dev/ptmx"

[code]....

Is this the expected behavior? (BTW this is copying a non-running linux-vserver called 'pristine')

General :: How To Ignore Hidden Characters

Nov 3, 2010

I'm trying to look at a file and find 6 or more consecutive consonants (everything except a vowel). However I have a hidden $ character at the end of each line in the file. For some reason I can't reference to it in any of the pattern searching commands.

For example: grep '[^aeiouAEIOU$]{6,}' file| more

This command returns words that contain 5 consonants at the end (because it interprets the hidden $ as not a vowel). How can I make it ignore the hidden character? Or more specifically how do I refer to the hidden character in my pattern searches?

General :: Removing A Cascade Of Increasing Zoomed Copies Of The Login Screen?

Apr 5, 2010

My grandson got a little free time on my login screen. When I got back I found the right half of the screen was covered with a cascade of zoomed copies of the regular login display. Each layer of the cascade larger that the previous as one moved right across the screen. When I reboot it is still there. I have tried various hotkey combinations in the hopes that I could change this, but with no result. I have looked for files which might have such a pattern saved. I found a file /usr/share/gnome-session/session-properties.ui with a promising name and inside was a series of 'child' entries, but removing all but the first child entry changed nothing. how to fix it?

Jan 13, 2010

The Lucid Amsynth package depends on newer versions of libatk1 and libjack0 than Karmic has, but I thought I would take a risk, and turns out Amsynth runs fine. However aptitude tries to uninstall Amsynth every time I do an upgrade. I think I've managed to put it on hold but now aptitude aborts. General :: Command Syntax Ignore Remaining Portion After Space?

Jul 14, 2010

I'm currently studying for my Linux+ test and I'm getting conflicting information regarding the rm -rf command. Yes, I know this a dangerous command, but my question is in regard to how the command functions. In one book I'm studying it says that rm -rf / home/myfolder (there's a space in there) will delete the entire root directory because there is a space between the root and home directory. It says that if there is a spacing such as this, it will ignore anything after the space, so in this case, it would delete the root directory and stop, not that there would be anything left anyway. Then in another book I have, it says that if you did a rm -rf folderName / (with the intention of adding the trailing slash to indicate it is a directory and not a folder) it will delete everything in folderName (assuming it's a child directory of your pwd) and then CONTINUE on and delete the root directory. Now, those two statements contradict each other. When you remove a directory, does the command line ignore anything after a space or not?

Note that the website will reference archive in real time, so it has to be an instant mirror and not something done nightly, etc.
