I have never used rsync before, only DD. But from what I have been reading, rsync is better becasue it will basically mirror your hard drive, thus being able to run the cloned software from the new hard drive. My problem is I do not know what is the best commands or even the basic commands to use in rsync. I am trying to make an image from a external hard drive to a usb drive. That way my chances of messing up he original software is not as risky becasue I'll just restore the image onto another hard drive. Does anyone know the best script to have rsync make an image file of a hard drive and place it on a usb drive and then restore it?

I am trying to upload some pics on my Facebook account using Firefox. When I click on Facebook's file upload icon, Firefox bring up a 'File Upload' window. I noticed that smaller image file is previewed on the lower right hand corner, while bigger image file is not. Is there anyway I can change this behavior or maybe change what Firefox is using to browse my files?

How to copy a Read-Only file in Linux and make the copy writable with a single cp command in Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)? The --no-preserve and --preserve seemed to be good candidates, except that they should "and" the mode flags, while what I am looking for is something that will "or" them (add +w mode).
More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.

Code:
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=~/cdrom_image.iso
ive done that successfully (making sure the drive is unmounted), but i cant even find the file now. ive searched the filesystem, but it doesnt appear anywhere.

I have created an iso image from a RHEL5.4 disc using mkisofs.
mkisofs -A "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -V "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -v -U -J -R -T
-b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot
-boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o /tmp/RHEL54-x86_64-dvd.iso .
It creates the iso image no problem, however when I go to boot a new server from the disc I get the boot prompt, hit enter, answer the language and keyboard questions and then it throws the following error:
"The Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD and press OK to retry".
Perhaps I need to specify in my mkisofs command that its supposed to be iso9660? This is on a RHEV virtual machine.

I have created an image out of 2 other images using the "montage" command. I want to then print it using "lpr". I view the output from montage in XV and it looks fine however when I try to print, it prints the bottom half of the first image then the second and then the bottom half again.
E.g., imagine this:
Code:
<< end of top image
<< end of bottom image
The above is how it looks in xv however when printed, it looks like:
Code:
-------
-------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
//////////////////
//////////////////
-------
-------
I really can't understand it, I've tried opening and saving the image again but it still prints as above. I don't know if montage is outputting it incorrectly or something, however it looks right on the screen!

Everything in Linux is a file, right? And everything can be represented by a file? Is there some way I could create a block device file that represents (i.e., provides an interface to) this image file? If so, then I could use fdisk on the device file to split it into partitions, format the partitions, and then mount them as directories. I could create a file system within a file system, which would be fun.

When I try to compile some Java code on Ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6+) using make and a Makefile.
I get an error indicating that the make utility cannot execute the java compile command (javac).
The error reads: /bin/bash: line 6: .: /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac: cannot execute binary file
I am executing make as root. I have enabled permissions on all directories in the path /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac and on javac itself.
I get this error whether using a jdk installed via ubuntu apt-get, or whether I install the jdk myself. And I get it using either Java 1.5 or 1.6
My machine has an 80386 processor. I notice the make utility is built for i686-pc-linux-gnu
However, I can manually compile using javac.
I can compile calling javac from within a bash script.
I can compile using the java compiler gcj from the command line: gcj --main=HelloWorld HelloWorld.java -o HelloWorld.exe
But I cannot compile java code from the makefile. Any reasons why I might be getting this error?

I followed the steps provided in the below link which will help me to convert from ISO to image. [URL] After it finished the setup it launched the VNC viewer and stated showing the booted messages and in that I could login to the OS as well (but when I do ifconfig it was showing 127.0.0.1 only though I had configured to virbr0). I copied the image from /var/lib/libvirt/images/ttylinux.img to Opennebula controller(Virtual machine tool kit).
I deployed using Opennebula , but I cloudnt not do SSH to that so I tried with VNC viewer by connecting the running VM , in the viewer shows that Booting from hard disk Boot failed : not a bootable disk No bootable device. How to copy the proper image ..? even I had tried clone the image thorugh virt-manager but same problem .
