My Hdd got some bad sectors and I had to reboot my PC. Now I am not able to log in. The OS is booting and then I get a message on the login screen "GNome settings are not configured ..." So the thing I am not even able to log into the system because of gnome failure and not getting shell access to the system. In this case how to recover my PC. Ubuntu is the only OS on my PC.
I was doing some experiment about resource-accessing. By mistake, I executed this command,$ sudo mv /etc/passwd /etc/passwd.bakThen I could not execute any command with privilege(eg. sudo mv /etc/passwd.bak /etc/passwd). When I shut the system down, I could not boot it any more.
I'm now using Ubuntu 10.04 with ext4 and for the second time in my life I experienced data loss (not for real: I got backups) and I'm assuming problems with the recent ext4 fs.
I want to restore all of my configurations (/etc and the like), data and home on reiserFS: is this possible? What to do in order to accomplish that?
I have changed my MAC address in my Linux machine using ifconfig. Now the problem is I have not saved my original MAC address. I want to restore it without rebooting. Is there a way to do it?
On my computer on the first disk /dev/sda was installed win2k system bootable with native win2k bootloader. I created imges of that partition using Ghost4linux na Clonezilla. Images were placed on the second computer using sshfs. For all this tasks i used PartedImage LiveCD.
I removed old partition and created a new ntfs partition on the same disk. When I used GParted or native Win2k partitioner the partition I get was smaller: the difference is a few bytes. Finally I used the Linux fdisk. Now the size was OK, but after restoration win2k was unbootable: I tried to recover the win2k but it was even impossible to locate a system on the partition. So I tried to move all the partition at the very beginning of the disk. Now at least I was able to mount (under Linux) the partition. But again win2k was unbootable and unrecoverable.
It seems for me that the partition is missplaced. According to Ghost4Linux the partition begins with an offset 0x56. I suspect that it should be rather 0x80.

I have had Kubuntu installed for quite some time, I very rarely use it because of my dependanacy on windows but frequently boot up Kubuntu to do updates.A few days ago, I tried to boot Kubuntu and it comes up in command line only, I login but it stays at the command line, no KDE.On the boot list I have Ubuntu 2.6.32-21-generic.I have gotten used to using KDE and now I need to use Linux but am not command line fluent.
I regularly take pgdumpall from production database and restore staging database. Production database size is 4.5 GB. After restoring the staging database size is incremented.
The following command is used to restore pgdumpall file.
psql -U postgres -f dbdumpall
My aim is to sync up production database and staging database.
I just received this Acer Aspire One Aoa110 from my sister. Originally Windows Xp, my cousin changed it to Linux. Right now I am so frustrated with this, as I have no knowledge of Linux whatsoever. I tried looking for the Acer recovery program, but I can't find it. I do have to say that Linux is really fast, but I like personalizing my walllpaper where I can do it with Windows Xp..
So my question is, how can I restore this computer to how it was before my cousin tweaked it?
Here is what the desktop looks like right now: http://i51.tinypic.com/s0vmhk.png
If i have 10 GB partition of '/'. Now i took the image of it for backup purpose. Now lets say my HD failed. I replaced the HD, and this time i created '/' partition of 20 GB. Can i restore the previous image of 10 GB over 20 GB ?
I recently tried to make a backup of an ntfs partition using dd.For example.. "sudo dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sda1" which made a copy of one partition to another, not realizing that it would wipe the ntfs filesystem and image across the linux partition. Is there anyway i can undo this to get back all the data which was on the ntfs drive? Cfdisk still sees the partition as NTFS. Have also tried photorec to try to retrieve the data but to no avail.
I have three hard drives that were previously in a Debian server setup to use LVM that I now need to access data on. The first hard drive had a boot partition along with an LVM partition, the other two hard drives were also LVM.From what I remember I have to mount all three at once for LVM to function correctly but I don't have available hardware (particularly a motherboard that can mount all old IDE).Can I use a USB<->IDE converter to image the disks, and then mount them? What Linux distro should I set up to recover the data?ow do I know what version of LVM is needed?
