I have changed my MAC address in my Linux machine using ifconfig. Now the problem is I have not saved my original MAC address. I want to restore it without rebooting.Is there a way to do it?
View 2 RepliesI have Lenovo IdeaPad z510 laptop.My HDD SMART status is currently "failure". As my laptop is under warranty I can return it to lenovo. So I want to backup as much data as possible (everything is readable). I currently have 3 operating systems: linux xubuntu 14.10, debian 8 and windows 8.1 (triple-boot?). I want to back up only my current debian installation. There are 3 partitions for debian: root (about 50GB), home (>200GB) and swap. I know that I can backup the whole partition using:

how to restore it later. In /etc/fstab there are references to UUIDs, and as I understand, with new HDD these UUIDs would be different. And possibly the whole partition table would be different. And how would I restore GRUB?I can't make full image of my disk simply because I don't have disk to store it on.Is it possible to create backup on my current debian installation without actually making full HDD backup? Would it work if I would install debian on new disk, then from LiveCD overwrite it with my backup and modify /etc/fstab to match new partitions?

My address book recently got corrupted and I was unable to restore the e-mails, however looking at my abook.mab file I could see that all of the e-mail addresses were in there. I wrote a php script to create a new tab delimited text file, which you can import into Thunderbird. I used it to recover about 7300 contacts and it seems to work well for the most part. Just change 'abook.mab' to point to your actual corrupt abook.mab file or put it in the same directory as the script.

I am unable to ssh a Linux box from other Linux boxes; also tried to window putty.Although I am getting the password prompt instantaneously.So far, by comparing logs of other server, I am just able figure out that "debug2: callback start" is not coming in ssh -vvv logs.

This friend has very little extra money right now, so my classmate suggested I try loading Linux on my friend's PC.I am wondering if it will work. The PC is a Compaq Presario SR5610F with an AMD processor. I have been told that Linux doesn't care much for AMD.Does anybody know if it will be possible to use Linux as an OS on this PC?I'm looking for a cheap(er) alternative than Windows. Friend is balking at Windows 7. The machine had Vista loaded in it when purchased, then the son loaded XP on it, without removing Vista. They have been having issues with crashing for some time now. The recovery disks are supposed to have XP on them, but I don't think that is so, and when I tried running those disks, the computer balked. I finally worked around and got XP to install, using a disk from an old computer, but the code would not work, and nobody could remember the computer's password and user name.I want to start fresh with this machine, and install a basic, working OS. Am leary about XP on eBay or some such, but they really don't have the funds to purchase anything over $100.00.

I tried the Netbook remix of the latest Ubuntu and Fedora 12 with no success at all. I'm beginning to wonder if this tiny old machine can run linux at all.

Principley I did this by performing a brute force buffer overflow attack on Fedora 10 and Ubuntu 9. I did this by writting a little concurrent server daemon which accidently on purpose didnt do bounds checking.
I then wrote a client to send it a malicious string brute forcing guessed addresses which caused a return-to-libc to the function usleep with a parameter of 16m causing a delay of 16 seconds as laid out in [URL] Once I hit the delay I new I had found the function and could calculate delta_mmap allowing me to create a standard chained ret-to-libc attack. All of that works fine. However .... To complete my understanding I am trying establish where I can find the standard base address for ubuntu 9 (and other distros) for the following, taken from Shacham:-

Currently my OS is Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Desktop OS and my web server is Apache2. I have a public address 60.x.y.z and my pc local address is 10.x.y.z. I have a web app in my Apache2 which currently run in localhost(10.x.y.z).
