I am using Fedora and I can see the public folders from other computers on my network as 'public on xxx'. Is there any way to mount that to the local fs? The way it is now I can only access it in the file manager.

Currently my routing device treats them like "oh, these are anyway for me, gnam gnam" which actually doesn't work.Unfortunatly setting up NAT rules that redirect requests from my lan correctly as they are redirected from wan is an option I would like to use only if there is no other possibility.I would like some kind of solution that treats packets that are sent to my public IP as normal packets that are not looped back before they even get out. So they would need to be at least sent to the wan gateway where they are directed back where my firewall can successfully treat them like all other public requests.

The following errors show up when I run from the file from the term window, but are not written to log.log:

I know with windows you can add the 2>&1 to capture error data. Is there such a thing for Linux?
I'm running XBMC media center which is built on Ubuntu and I'm trying to mount a network share, but I can't seem to automate it. If I manually run:

The mount is created and everything works fine. But obviously the mount eill be lost on the next boot. A few months back, when I was running a previous version of XBMC and first instructed on how to do this, I was told to put that command in /etc/init.d/rc.local so the mount would automatically be created at boot. I did and it worked. The other day I upgraded to a new XBMC build (which is built on the newer Lucid Ubuntu) and while the same command creates the mount, putting it in /etc/init.d/rc.local does not create it on boot. Someone suggested the fstab was the better place to create the mount. So I inserted the following in /etc/fstab:

That doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong and how can I get this mount auto-created on boot?
I run a headless Ubuntu 8.04 server, which acts as a web, email and file server. I am sticking with 8.04 as it is a LTS release and will upgrade to the next LTS when it is released.
I have two external USB drives, that I need to mount at boot. I have been using /etc/fstab up until now, with the following entries:

However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.
I have a directory on my server at /home/dave/www/images/site (ext3) which I want to mount directly to my Windows computer so that I can transfer data easily via command line tool. Is that something possible?

Is there a way to specify all the gids that the remote user has?

I'm trying to write a p2p file sharing program using python's built-in libraries. Everything is going well. The only thing is that i'd like to be able to use openssl public and private keys so only a host with the public key could access/decrypt the filesharing. I've gotten these libraries (httplib, basehttpserver, ssl, os) to work using just a pem file containing both the public and private keys but no success with them seperately. Can someone point me in the right direction or offer an alternative? PS, the goal of the project is to create an anonymous, decentralized, secure file sharing program. I want to be able to upload this to sourceforge so everyone can use it, if that's any incentive

I have two machines on my local netowrk, one running Fedora 9 and the other Fedora 11,(64 bit version).I made one, machine A, into an NSF server and arranged to export a directory to the other machine B.I made sure the firewalls were allowing nsf traffic, and I restarted all the relevant daemons.But the mounting still doesn't work.I looked at the setup on my Linksys router, but I don't see anything obvious there that might be getting in the way.ping and ssh recognize my names for the two machines and work properly, bu t I've also tried using the numeric local ip addresses.I tried with the program showmount on B to see if there was any connectivity and I getB% showmount -e Aand I get the responseclint_create:RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: unable to receive.I used to manage a departmental network and set up nfs mounts all the time, but things were simpler then. View 14 Replies View RelatedI am mounting a Window's network shared folder every time Fedora boots. It is mounted into the /mnt directory. Recently I noticed I am almost out of disk space, and I found out that my mount folder is what is eating all the space. I was under the assumption that the mounted folder wasn't on my Fedora machine at all, and resided on the Windows machine. Apparently my assumption was incorrect, or possibly I mounted something in an unusual way.

I found several tutorials that recommend curlftpfs, but this project seems no longer maintained (last update on sourceforge goes back to Apr 2007).
So, is curlftpfs still the best choice or is there something newer which I could rely on?

One of Konqueror's unique features is that i can name a local process as the action in a form. When i submit that form, the local process is executed. Very helpful for certain offline tasks. What would make it even better is if i could find a way to pass some data to that local process from the html page. This could be the content of a hidden input item, etc. Alternatively, if there is a way for Konqueror to create or update a local file with data from the html page, that would acheive the same end.

I tried telling yum to install all the packages at the same time, though, the dependencies still fail to resolve (though they are all in the directory). I don't know if it would be safe to force install without the dependencies (even though I would install them later).

What I was wondering in this day of laptops, if there was a script that could find and mount Window shares that were hooked into your local network, but only on a temporary bases. Something like what you would do mount a usb connection, such as a camera that you had the drivers for. I do know that networks are more complex, was just interested if something like that was developed yet. Just to let you know that my scripting skills are zero, and my ability to do so less.

It seems CacheFS exists to cache reads, but not writes to nfs.
I would imagine that if I could cache writes to my nfs on a local drive I could have a fast system, but keep all my files where I want them on my network.
I'm thinking about this because I am planning on buying a SSD, and I would imagine if I could set things up this way the system could be lightening fast while keeping things on the network. Currently if I copy a large file (hundreds of MB) it is quite slow, with an SSD and caching, I would imagine the copy could be very fast.
I have a script which runs a few other scripts (in subfolders of the first script) in order to mount some unix/linux shares) Anyway, when I run the file from rc.local and try to pipe the output into a file the file is empty and the shares are not mounted. however when I run the file it mounts everything.... Also, the script doesn't work on my wireless clients...

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a computer, the one I am on now, with Ubuntu 10.10, it should be completely updated... and I can network with other computers, I can access Windows XP and 7 shared locations on other computers, and I can also get Ubuntu on other computers to access this computer's shared files.What I can't do, however, is share my hardrives that are on this computer, I have tried sharing them in /media/ and etc, but it is not working, apparently you have to mount them in some mystical way.
Another problem is getting Windows machines to access Ubuntu computers on the network - which I believe is a Windows problem, so I can figure that out some other time, but importantly, I want to be able to share my hardrives over the network.
If someone can give me some instructions to mounting and sharing hardrives(internal), and even my DVD-Drives, and portable USB devices, would also be fantastic - since, in Windows you can just right click, "share", and it's done.. It is a very useful thing to have, and I don't want to use Windows on this computer anymore, but I have no choice, really, if I can't share my storage to the other computers.
I can't find GNU's public key anywhere. I searched on ftp.gnu.org and I googled, and I can't find their public key.
