I've failed each time, but I thought that the third time, I'd enlist some help from the forums, if I could. how do I know that the nfs server and not the client is the problem? Short answer is: I don't! That's why nfs (and many netwrk problems) are laborious, you're troubleshooting needs to take place at both source and desitination. Next question, what do I have set up so far? Well, I did download the nfs server kernel stuff (two months back) and /etc/init.d/nfsserver start seems to get set up OK. No errors and the daemons nfsd, idmapd, mountd area all running. So, I *think* that part is OK. I have the share set up properly in /etc/exportfs and have "exportfs -r" it.
OK, now onto the trickier stuff: the client and iptables. On the client pinging to the nfserver box is perfect, and I have rpcbind running. the reported error is "mount.nfs: mount system call failed" though from experience nfs errors don't mean a whole lot.However, I will go off and check now and see if I need a mountd running on client-side too.Then there's iptables .... ouch, that could be a long and painful trek. I don't see any specific ports being blocked, and it's the iptables that the default v11.2 opensuse came with. I did turn them off and the problem was the same, so whether wishfl thinking or not, I'm hoping it's not an iptables issue.

View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu(10.04) was working fine, then some program crashed or something, and I just switched off (power offed) the computer. When I restarted it, this sort of stuff comes:

and some more lines like that, and then 'Busybox' starts with [intramfs].I booted Ubuntu from a pen drive and ran fsck on the main partition. I just pressed 'y' for a long time (it asks stuff like should it continue repairing or something), and then it was done. I restarted the pc and it booted normally - it looked as if everything was fine.I started google chrome, and it said it couldn't find a personal config file .. ok. Then I tried opening a folder - nothing happens. The system monitor doesn't open, and windows that do open eventually are completely blank. I restarted the pc (this time by doing the normal restart), and it gave me the same 'Busybox' thing.I did the same procedure again, and got the same results. (ubuntu boots, programs dont work, then I restart and the Busybox thing comes again)One More Thing : The Ubuntu installed on the hard disk had all the recent updates (including the latest linux kernel) while the pen drive thing was around 2 months old I think. So maybe that's the cause?

Doesn't seem to matter which version, every time I try to install Software raid on an Ubuntu server system, it blows up with this error. Seems I've had trouble for several versions.

I've done it on Centos Fine, and followed the many different instructions I've seen for Ubuntu. The only luck I've had was with bios raid, but I would much rather let Mdadm handle things.

I install both as letting Ubuntu decide partitions for one drive, do the same for the other, and create a raid, and do them from scratch. No dice, same problem. I've tried that one as logical and as primary too. No difference. Something just doesn't like booting from a raid 1 Mirror. I've tried installing grub on both HDDs (sda1 + sdb1)I've tried several CDs, burned from several machines. Re-downloaded from Torrent and from the website. The DVD drives work since I purchased new DVD drives for both one workstation and the server. Things install fine under CentOS, software raid comes up.

I had to go through some gyrations to get the Belkin wireless N router to allow my server to have a static IP. I can not use nfs from F10 client to F12 server. nfs mount on F10 to F12 times out anf nfs4 mount gives "mount.nfs4: mounting localhost:/home failed, reason given by server: No such file or directory" I have tried to close firewall and set selinux to permissive mode on both client and server with same result. Okay, so on occasion when I boot into ubuntu I get this error

I get the error when I open any of the kernel versions or any recovery mode. Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop is the only OS installed on the computer, which is a Lenovo S10-3. I can eventually get it to go away, sometimes by repeatedly unplugging it and plugging it back in, and sometimes I will boot into GParted, do nothing, then restart and it will work.I have found some solutions online, but all of them involve the error happening as a result of dual booting with Windows.I have made no major system changes recently, so I can't see anything like that being the problem.

I am trying to install tilp, a program for the link between a computer and a Texas Instruments calculator. I have downloaded all the packages to a local directory. I tried telling yum to install all the packages at the same time, though, the dependencies still fail to resolve (though they are all in the directory). I don't know if it would be safe to force install without the dependencies (even though I would install them later).

I have tried selinux issues,permission issues, anon issues,chroot issues but no solution.

I've noticed that mountall seems to be trying to mount my share before it has network access.
I'm trying to build a cups server (with cups-pdf) and it's not printing (creating) the PDF output. from cups-pdf log:

the lp command is being ran from SSH as "testuser", who is in the lpadmin group (as well as sysadmin, users, and about 5 other groups while troubleshooting this) I've tried creating the PDF folder as both the user, and as root but still no output file (when the folder is created the first error goes away, but the user output error remains) *note, the /home directory is a symbolic link to a separate partion (/storage) I'm still a bit green on linux, but the server is headless, and for now i'm just trying to get normal users able to print using cups-pdf

I have a SAN drive space connected to a SLES 10 (OES2) server. The server sees the drive at /dev/sdb1, and I was able to use fdisk to create a partition on it. I created a new directory /mnt/testvol, where I would like to mount the SAN drive to.
Fdisk shows the volume to be at /dev/sdb1 and lists it as Linux filesystem.
I used this command to try to mount it:
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/testvol -t nfs
and I get this error:
mount: directory to mount not in host:dir format
I'm trying to connect to the other computers on the network in my house, but, when I try to view the main file folders it tells me "unable to mount location: failed to mount windows share" I've looked everywhere I can think of and have done everything they've told me to do, and I still can't get it to work.

I must use DLXLinux bundled in Bochs (bochs.sourceforge.net).
I am required to use the /usr/local directory.
In /usr directory, there is no directory named 'local' but there is one thing called 'local@'. So, when I try to use mkdir command to create 'local' directory in /usr , there are error "cannot make directory.....".

i have a suse 11.3 machine and i cannot set it to be a NFS server that is i cannot mount a directory of this machine on another one running as well a 11.3 while i can mount without problem a directory from 10.0.i do not know where to start as the NFS server option seems to have vanished from YAST.

I have two external USB drives, that I need to mount at boot. I have been using /etc/fstab up until now, with the following entries:

However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy network was running happily with no problems. After clicking "Places," then "Network," I double-clicked "Windows Network." My wife's laptop appeared merrily ready to be clicked. I browsed through and accessed the "Public" folder. Ubuntu auto-mounted the "Public" folder on the Windows Vista machine to the desktop. All was well.
I wanted to change the icon to a disk so it would mimic a "mapped" drive like in Windows. I right-clicked the shared folder mounted on the desktop, clicked "Properties," and then clicked the picture of the folder. I then clicked through to "/usr/share/icons/Human/scalable/devices" and selected the "drive-harddisk.svg" icon. The icon changed and I could still browse. I unmounted and re-mounted the folder with no problems, then changed back the disk to the regular folder icon.
After restarting the computer, if I click "Places," then "Network," then double-click "Windows Network," I'm greeted with the following error message:
Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server.
WORKAROUND: Opening Firefox and typing smb://IP-of-wife's-laptop shows the share list. I can open and access the "Public" folder no problem.
