View 2 Replies View RelatedJust spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.
The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]
My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.
The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.
Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?
And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?
How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?
I want set up VPN on my VPS but when i try to turn on tun/tap i see:
:/lib/modules# modprobe tun
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.17.1.el5.028stab070.7PAE/modules.dep: No such file or directory
os : debian 5
(folder lib/modules is empty)
When I compile a custom kernel with this command: make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers and then install the .deb, there's no initrd in /boot and I have to create it manually. I've thought that the --initrd option should take care about this, but somehow it doesn't.
It behaves like this for about two years at least (since I've compiled my first kernel). Of course, it's no big deal to create it manually, I was just wondering whether do I do anything wrong or whether should I fill a bug report..
I've been trying to load my pcmcia network card driver "xirc2ps_cs" at startup with no success. I have added "modprobe xirc2ps_cs" to the rc.modules file but it doesn't load at startup. Curiously, though, if I execute rc.modules AFTER the machine has booted it will load the modules just fine. Just not during the boot up process. Thinking that hotstart might have been causing problems I've disabled hotstart (chmod -x) temporarilly to remove it from the picture, but there was no change.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have compiled the linux kernel. My bzImage is 1,14 mb big
Anyway. It's only 2 programs i need and it's Python and Busybox. I have compiled python and busybox and put them together in a folder. Busybox is 146 kb and pyton is 4,4 mb.
But how do i make an initrd file of them? Or should a make an initrd file of them?
I get this error when a runt with a compiled busybox to gz format as initrd, and without initrd.
Quote:
VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknow-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partions:

Do you know how to make an initrd?
creation of initrd manually(not using mkinitrd).
View 1 Replies View Relatedi am using rhel5 and i just wanted to see the contents of the initrd image. I have copied that from /boot/grub and saved in /tmp directory. Then i did the following
#mv initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img.gz
#gunzip initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img.gz
#mount -o loop initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img /mnt
when i gave that, it says "mount: you must specify the filesystem type" Then i included "-t ext2" option in the mount command. Now it says,
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Then i created a ext2 filesystem and did the same thing. But there is no difference.
Why use nash instead of busybox in initrd and initramfs? I'm just looking for pros and cons of both really (and any other applications with similar functionality). I'm currently leaning towards busybox being the better option, why redhat and fedora use nash in their initrd.

View 3 Replies View RelatedTonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.
I run alot of Linux running in memory. Mainly by PXE booting a kernel and the entire OS as the "initrd" file.
I have a RHEL6 image running as a VirtualBox guest and the entire OS (minimal) is contained withing 1GB of disk. I wan't to boot the entire /dev/sda1 "/" (its the only partition on the drive, no swap) as the initrd file and run everything from memory. But grub won't let me. So before I try and re-invent the wheel I thought to post here first.
Details. RHEL 6 as guest in VIrtual BOX. configured with 3Gb memory. HD is single partition and known as /dev/sda1.
at the grub console. I issue
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-19.el6.x86_64 root=/dev/ram0
initrd (hd0,0)
But the grub windows just freezes. Apparently it doesn't like the fact that I've referenced the entire partition (hd0,0) as the initrd. Any thoughts? Or any better boot loader like SYSLINUX?
BTW, I am not worried about the /etc/fstab mentioning /dev/sda1 at this point, I have a fix for that already. I would like to see grub load up the partition as an initrd.
today I upgraded my 11.2 system to KDE 4.4.2. Basically this works. However there are two questions I was not yet able to find a useful answer for:
- 4.4.2 offer strigi desktop search. The index process started and probably did its job but how can I start a search. I found a hint that dolphin can be used, but here I do not find any Menu entry that opens a search dialog (except for the standard file search window). What I found was settings->Toolbar and there I could add a search bar into dolphins toolbar. However this search bar only appears in this one window, if I close it and open a new dolphin window it will not appear again (probably a bug). Any other way to start a strigi based desktop search?
- Again in dolphin I sometimes see strange folder icons for the folders in my home directory. Basically this is the default folder icon and after waiting a while all the icons change in that inside the regular folder icon a gray rectangle is displayed a the lower left side. No idea what this is good for. I goes away if I reload the folders content and then again after a while those strange icon appears again. It does however not appear for folders in eg /tmp only for /home which is on my system a NFS mounted filesystem.

When I run the YAST Online Update OR Software Management OR Zypper, the Updates (or install of new software) fails when the download of the Delta RPM reaches 98%. I have added ALL of the community repositories and have Imported the appropriate certificates. When watching the DeltaRPM or normal RPM download, it starts the download at approx. 4Mbs/sec until it reaches 98% of file downloaded. Then, the speed drops to 0 B/sec and the file download fails. This then prompts a Retry which again fails when it reaches approx 98% download.
It does not matter if I am doing an Online Update, Doing a Software Management (to install new software) or using Zypper in a Terminal session, the result is the same. I have even gone so far as to connect the machine DIRECTLY to the internet, bypassing all firewalls so as to ensure it is not a firewall issue.
