General :: Windows - Make Rsync Case Insensitive
Mar 12, 2011
I'm rsync'ing a bunch of files between a Windows and a Linux system. Since not all Windows care about case, some of the files on the Windows system no longer have the same casing as they had on the Linux system. But rsync now treats these files as different and uploads a new copy.
Is it possible to have rsync ignore the case?

I am working with a third party that use windows to compile. When we port that code I am running into a lot of case issues where the includes are not case sensitive. Is there any option in GCC to make it case insensitive. I know its a long shot, as I have done reading and does not seem so.

Recently I've been migrating my development environment to ubuntu (desktop edition, because this is not a server, is just my computer) and I've been having some problems with apache case-sensitive (I'm an absolute beginner with it). I want to make apache case-insensitive, but I didn't find a complete and easy to follow solution online more than doing this:
From the command line, type sudo su to get root privileges.
nano /etc/apache2/mods-available/speling.conf
Type CheckSpelling on and hit ctrl-x, y to exit and save the file.
type a2enmod and then speling and hit enter.
type /etc/init.d/apache2 reload to reload apache.
Mistype a url to test it.
I found that here: [URL]. It worked for some things but I'm still having a lot of problems with capitalization. I don't wanna go back to windows an ISS. BTW I'm using ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition 32-bits, and I've not moved any apache configuration more than that described above.

I'm using Centos 5.4 and Subversion 1.4.2. I use MySQL to authz user when connect to SVN. In MySQL database, I have a username 'Harry', and in the file access control, I typed username 'harry'. Now I just can login with 'harry' user, cannot with 'Harry'. How can I check lower case on SVN before it requires authz, I tried to use AuthzForceUsernameCase Lower but apache cannot start.
This is my subversion.conf file

I am trying to do a search for the certain books, and I am trying to make it case insensitive. what I have come up with so far is this :
Code:
Database.txt
RETARDED MONKEY:RACHEAL ABRAHAML:30:30:20
GOLD:FATIN:23.20:12:3
StUPiD:JERLYN:20:40:3
Code:
echo -n "Title: "
read Title
echo -n "Author:"
read Author
echo ""
valuecheck='grep -i "$Title" Database.txt | grep -i "$Author" | awk -F":" '{ print $1}''
echo $valuecheck
if [ $Title = $valuecheck ] ; then
echo "HOHOHO"
else
echo "too bad"
fi
The issue which I am having is that, when it does the search for the correct row to be inputted into valuecheck, it will input the value as written in the database, which is in Uppercase. For this case, if I type in stupid for $Title and jerlyn for $Author, it searches the correct row, but the awk will print "STUPID" into the variable as that is what is written in the database. So how can I make my if statement case insensitive? Currently it reads like this:
Code:
if [ $Title = $valuecheck ] ; then
which means
if [stupid = StUPiD ] ; then
How can I make the if statement it case insensitive to allow it to display "HOHOHO"

I am downloading some files via tftp from the server (call it my server) and I need the server to be case insensitive to the file names requested. That is If I request "SoMe.TTL" and the actual file name is "some.ttl" it should send "some.ttl" back! Right now it is case sensitive and is a pain in the but because some windows clients upload files to that directory and the names can have any case. Furthermore, the file request mechanism must allow the user to input the required file name, hence the user can write using any case. Can the tftp-server solve cases by it's own? How about dnsmasq's internal tftp server? Ok, maybe I wasn't explicit above:
I need to make the fedora tftpd-server Case Insensitive!

We're in the process of implementing an offsite backup of all our servers to a remote Linux server. We're using rsync over ssh. What I've found is that characters such as ±, ¶,´ and £ are replaced on the Linux server with underscores.I don't mind if it changes these characters in the filenames of documents, but when it renames a language pack from Espa±ol.clx to Espa_ol.clx, it could cause issues for us further down the line.
What do I need to do differently to make the special characters copy over correctly? For the initial sync which will take place locally, before the machine is moved offsite, I have SAMBA enabled. I am able to copy files from Windows to the Samba share, retaining the original filename, though it looks different in the Linux directory listing, i.e. t̻st becomes ĻstThese files get deleted by rsync when it runs, as it does not match the filenames.

Thought I'd post it here because it's more server related than desktop... I have a script that does:

This is used to sync my local development snapshot with the live web server. There has to be a more compact way of doing this? Can I combine some of the rsyncs? Can I make the rsync set or keep the user and group affiliations? Can I exclude .* yet include .htaccess?

Is there a way to force rsync to not make directories in its destination directory; ie, to simply dump all of the files from the source directory directly into the destination without copying any of the folders that the files were originally in? I tried --no-dirs, but that seems to only be for empty directories.

I have never used rsync before, only DD. But from what I have been reading, rsync is better becasue it will basically mirror your hard drive, thus being able to run the cloned software from the new hard drive. My problem is I do not know what is the best commands or even the basic commands to use in rsync. I am trying to make an image from a external hard drive to a usb drive. That way my chances of messing up he original software is not as risky becasue I'll just restore the image onto another hard drive. Does anyone know the best script to have rsync make an image file of a hard drive and place it on a usb drive and then restore it?

I've figured out about half of the problem this time. I've duplicated the directory structure of the Windows machine on the Linux server.
I then proceed with mounting the Windows share on the Linux server. I type the mount command while I'm in Folder1 on the Linux server:
Code:
So far so good. Now I need to rsync and the command for this is
Code:
But what do I fill in here? I'm guessing path/to/dst is just plain Folder1 on the Linux box. Path/to/src refers to the share on the Windows machine but since I've mounted that share, is path to source = path to destination?

Kernel 2.6, Slackware 12.0
mkisofs 2.01
I do 'mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt'. Only an example. When I mount image, ls outputs john_smi.txt. So it has shorten to 8.3 and translated ' ' into '_'. This is in accordance with the manual, although it doesn't say the conversion will be done.
Quote:
-iso-level level
.........................
With all iso9660 levels from 1..3, all filenames are restricted to upper case letters, numbers and the underscore (_).
...........................
However, as it did not reject the file name, it should have converted it to all upper case, it seems to me. And -iso-level 2|3 does the same thing.
Code:
root@darkstar:~# mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt
Total translation table size: 0
Total rockridge attributes bytes: 0
Total directory bytes: 0

I use openvpn to connect otherwise isolated machines, and use samba to share filesystems across the vpn, which works just fine. But I recently discovered that copying files using rsync -e ssh is so much faster than copying from a mounted filesystem - like about 5 times faster.I've got comp-lzo enabled in both server and the client, at least I think I have, the directive is there in both the server.conf and the client.conf files, but how do I check that it's active?Does anyone know if I can make openvpn behave more like rsync, because copying is easier than rsyncing?

I have the following rsync command for making some backups:
Code:
rsync -r --progress --delete -H --numeric-ids -a --exclude=.gvfs /source /media/Backup
If I paste that in my Terminal, it will perform a backup of all the files and show me what's going on in the Terminal window. But how can I make that into a launcher? I have made a launcher on my desktop with that code in its Properties, but double-clicking it starts the rsync process (I can see HDD activity) but a Terminal window won't open.

I've been trying to get my headless Ubuntu 9.10 server to back up files from my Windows XP box and onto a 1 TB Seagate FreeAgent Go USB drive (which is connected to the Ubuntu server). I've tried two different methods, both of which are behaving strangely and not quite working. I'm using SSH to access my Ubuntu server.
The /etc/fstab line for the USB drive looks like this:
Code:
/dev/sdb1 /media/usb-backup-windows ntfs uid=34,gid=34,umask=022,dirsync,sync 0 0
I'm using NTFS because I'd like to share this drive between Windows and Linux. The drive gets mounted fine and I can read/write files after booting up. The way I'd like for this to work is to have my Ubuntu box mount the Windows drive using CIFS. So I mounted the C drive using the following command:
Code:
smbmount //windowsxp/C$ /mnt/windowsxp/C -o directio,iocharset=utf8,noperm,nounix,ro,credentials=/home/user/.smb/passwords.conf
The mount works fine. I can browse directories under /mnt/windows/xp/C, read files, copy files to Ubuntu, etc. So now I have my USB drive mounted and the C drive on my Windows box mounted. Should be good to go, right? Unfortunately, after several minutes (this varies, sometimes it can go an hour or so) of copying files using rsync --archive /mnt/windowsxp/C/ /media/usb-backup-windows/C/ (the actual command I use has more options - not sure if that's important), the server locks up.
The SSH session dies and I can no longer ping it. The server will eventually start responding after several minutes, only to lock up again a few minutes later, and so on and so on. When it locks up, the following messages end up in /var/log/kern.log:
Code:
CIFS VFS: Unexpected lookup error -26
CIFS VFS: No response to cmd 46 mid 59789
CIFS VFS: Send error in read = -11
CIFS VFS: server not responding
I did some Googling on these messages and came across a suggestion to set /proc/fs/cifs/OplockEnabled to 0. I gave that a shot but it didn't make a difference. I also tried plugging in a mouse and noticed that I could make the server respond immediately after a lock up by moving the mouse. I have to move the mouse though - just leaving it plugged in without movement doesn't help. I have to wait for the hang to occur and then move it. Once I do that, things progress for another few minutes.
This got me thinking that I had a lack of entropy and the mouse movement was kicking things into gear. So I tried moving /dev/random to /dev/random-chaos, and created a symlink /dev/random that just pointed to /dev/urandom. This didn't work - same exact behavior. So why in the world does moving the mouse bring the server back and cause it to start responding, if only for a few more minutes until the next hang?
I then gave up on this approach and tried connecting to an rsync daemon running on my Windows box (using Cygwin), instead of using the CIFS mount point. After getting the config file right and figuring out how to run it as a service on Windows, I started getting files copied once again. However, after what seems to be about the same length of time (several minutes to an hour or so), the rsync connection dies and I get the following message in the Windows rsync log file:
Code:
2010/03/22 13:01:01 [4024] rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes to socket [sender]: Connection reset by peer (104)
2010/03/22 13:01:01 [4024] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(1539) [sender=3.0.7]
The Windows box is running rsync 3.0.7 and Ubuntu is running 3.0.6, but they are both protocol 30. The rsync error log on Ubuntu doesn't help much - it also says "Connection reset by peer". I've tried this at least a dozen times and it always fails with these messages. It's weird because it's always 4 bytes, never anything different. I also noticed that /var/log/kern.log had the following messages, although they do not line up with the times that rsync died:
Code:
usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
I did some Googling on this message and tried some stuff that worked for other people. I added dirsync and sync to /etc/fstab. I tried setting /sys/block/sdb/device/max_sectors to 64. Neither one of those made a difference. unloading the ehci_hcd module and dropping back to USB 1.0. However, 9.10 doesn't seem to have that module loaded, so I'm not exactly sure how to turn off USB 2.0 and just try 1.0. I'm not real enthused with that workaround anyway because I have at least 500 GB to copy.
I've kind of run out of ideas here. It's frustrating because the entire reason I bought the hardware and set up Ubuntu was to run backups. I'm not sure if my problem is a networking issue (CIFS VFS server not responding, connection reset by peer), a problem with running headless (wiggling the mouse temporarily prevents the hang), a USB device problem (reset high speed USB device messages), or something else entirely.

I am backing up may data using Rsync via SSH. I am trying to find a solution that allows me to push my backups from windows and Ubuntu to a Ubuntu server. I don't like the solution that requires my windows machines to have shared drives. Not viable for laptop users that may piggyback on free wireless networks. I would also like a solution that has a GUI for the desktop user but not totally required. I will need a solution that allows me to restore files by date. I do a lot of changes to files on a daily basis and sometimes need an older copy of a file.
I love using Rsync as it is a very simple solution and extremely quick. The only thing I don't know how to do is recover different version of a file. It would be nice to see a visual representation of all the files and different dates of each file. I know I might be asking a little too much, but, it is after all, Linux.

The folder where the mount is coming is: /home/bastiaan/backup/mounts
Credentials are in /home/bastiaan/backup/credentials and they're called: martijn
