Ubuntu :: Mkfs.ntfs Partitions Are Not Recognized By Windows 7?

I formatted with mkfs.nts a USB 500 GB external drive. Under Linux when I connect it to the USB port it's recognized and works. Under windowz 7 home is's seen in the device list but not in the computer window. I can't do anything with it apart eject it. I'm dual booting windows vista and ubuntu hardy on a multi-partitioned Dell D630. I created a partition using mkfs -t ntfs. Linux has no trouble reading/writing to it, but every time I boot into windows, chkdsk tries to "fix" the partition, fails, and tells me that the partition is corrupted. Can anybody suggest a way to convince vista that the partition is indeed ok, or else another way to create the partition so that vista can recognize it?
On my system I have two internal SATA Disk drives, the first one is 120GB and the second one 360GB.
120GB Disk: 1st partition: NTFS (22GB), Windows XP is installed, for playing my games. 2nd partition: NTFS (62GB), The "GAMES" partition, where all the games are installed 3rd partition: EXT4 (25GB), Ubuntu Karmic 4th partition: SWAP space
The 320GB disk is a single NTFS partition, where all my data/files are stored. A couple of days ago I used GPARTED to shrink the 320GB partition and create a new 2GB FAT32 one at the end of it. (Never had any problem before using GPARTED for any filesystem). I put in there some old dos games and rebooted to windows. Then I formatted a diskette as MS-DOS startup disk. I rebooted the computer again and and booted from the FreeDOS LiveCD. After playing for a while I tried the MS-DOS disk, to see if it performed better.
Now Windows XP does not recognize the DATA and GAMES partitions, buts recognizes the fat32 one. In ubuntu they work, but when I try to fix them, it says "run chkdsk". Windows does not recognize them so I cannot do this. I tried to restore Windows XP from a Norton Ghost Backup image file, but its LiveCD does not recognize these partitions either (norton ghost 12 uses vista to boot the live cd).
I was attempting to format a flash drive, and well, used the wrong sdX device. I've run DiskInternals Partition Recovery tool, and all my files are still there (you have to pay $139 to have it restore the files). Is there any way using tools in linux to restore the ntfs partition/files? It was a single disk with the partition taking the entire drive. I've tried mounting it with the -t option, but it says invalid ntfs signature. Man, two lessons the hard way, make sure you backup (duh) and be careful what you type as root.
I've made 2 ntfs volumes by mkntfs. First one is a primary partition on usb hard drive and second is a logical partition on system hard drive. I used default cluster and sector sizes in mkntfs. Under Linux these partitions are mountable by ntfs-3g, readable and writable. But fdisk doesn't recognize their filesystem type. It recognizes that as "Linux". WinXP x64 also can't recognize filesystem type of these partitions. Why windows can't work with these partitions?
I still have to dual boot with Windows (for now!) but having the various NTFS partitions show up in Nautilaus, etc. is a problem.Also I would like to share some data between Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10 but I cannot create any more partitions due to well know limitations. In my case I already have 3 primary Windows partitions that I want to keep and 1 primary Linux with ext4 and swap as logicals for Ubuntu. BTW my laptop had all 4 primaries used up an I got rid 1 for Ubuntu. I could get rid of more but really do not want to now.
I found many great ideas and suggestions here in the forums but could not find exactly what I was looking for so I cobbled together a couple of I ideas and I think I have a working solution.First to hide a Windows partition and protect it this works great when you add this line to fstab:
Of course change your partition to the correct one and make sure the /Windows directories are created.I have used this many times and it works great except I want to have access to 1 or 2 directories without exposing the whole drive.I turned to symbolic links to help solve but when sda2 is "hidden" with the above there is a rights problem for my normal user. I could probably solve it with umask somehow but I just did this instead:
I found this allows me to access the directory but it is still hidden from Nautilaus. I am guessing it is because it is mounted in a location it does not normally look in.After this I created a symbolic link to the directories I want access like this:

Note I did not use sudo here because that was causing me rights problems at one time. This is permanent until you rm the windir file since symbolic links are just special files.
So now I can access windir in my home directory on the NTFS partition without me accidentally messing up my other Windows system files. If I try hard I can mess it up but this provides just enough protection for me. I can also drag the link to my desktop or the Naultilaus left nav pane and it acts like a regular directory.I sure there are a 100 ways to achieve what I wanted to do but thought I would share this method since it took me a while to figure it out.
I have installed ubuntu on my notebook, and there are 4 partitons in the hdd, all are NTFS, only one is ext4.
the problem is i deleted some hidden folders(in ubuntu which are not hidden, such as recyclebin and file information table folders) in ntfs partitions, now i need to reinstall the windows 7 back, i have a doubt that even windows will ever recognize those partitions again?
How can I get access to my NTFS Partitions in VirtualBox running Windows XP Pro? I saw it somewhere once saying something about setting up shared files but it was confuseing and did not work.
I know nothing about linux. But my friend says linux is good. So, I kept a copy of fedora core 10 i386. My fiend has a lot of movies about 100 in his ipod. So, I took it. It contains lot of viruses and I opened the ipod in windows but my windows has malfunctioned due to the virus. So, I have installed the fedora core 10 i386. I have some important information in the windows ntfs partitions. How do i mount those ntfs partitions.
I have a desktop with Ubuntu and I've set up Samba to share files with my Windows 7 laptop. I can access my home folder just fine except for my NTFS storage partitions on the desktop's HDD and my home folder's Downloads folder (which times out whenever I try and open it).
Is there an alternative way to share files between Linux and Windows 7?
I just ruined my /ntfs partition. I used the mkfs command and stopped it by ^C immidiately, but it was too late. mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb1
Is there a way to recover NTFS partition now ? The partition </dev/sdb1> was 'ntfs' and mkfs.ext4 did not check if it was a ext4 or give any pre-check warning, just went ahead with making the ext4 fs on a ntfs partition.
I have a windows box running w2003 server on 1 volume with 2x ntfs basic partitions. c: = the windows bit, d: = the data bit for user data.I have cloned (clonezilla) the volume to another and deleted the data (d bit and want to extend the c: into the freed space.I'm booted from a partedmagicv5 cd and using gparted to attempt this.I can't see a way to do this with gparted but then, I could be thick. Maybe I clone off reformat and copy back?Is there a better way or even is this the correct forum (please don't refer me to Microsoft website:-) for this type of question?This is a test box so not worried about breaking it, but the test is to try to solve a live problem at a school I support which is running out of hd space.
I am doing major deployment of opensuse 313 pcs from windows to opensuse. I am having a problem that I have to keep 2 ntfs partitions intact will deleting the partition that has windows. Now everything goes well, opensuse installs but the problem is that I cannot give user full rights to ntfs folders. I have used graphical file permission methods n terminal chown n chmod methos but still permissions revert back to root.
The thing is I want to install Ubuntu alongside my Win 7 32-bit OS on its own partition. I have four partitions: System Reserved (made automatically by Win 7), System (where Win 7 is installed), Ubuntu (which is a partition I made during the installation of Win 7 that is empty) and Data (where all my documents, music and such is at).
The problem is that when I get to the point in the installation of Ubuntu where you choose where to install it, Ubuntu doesn't recognize any partitions at all! So to install Ubuntu I would have to erase everything which I would very much like to avoid - moreover I read it was better to begin with installing Win 7. If I choose to 'Try Ubuntu' and thereafter open GParted this is what it looks like:
The weird thing is that when I open 'Computer' I can see the different partitions and even open the partitions and files on them. It seems to work the way it should. When I open a drive it creates a shortcut on the desktop. So when I've entered all of them it looks like this: This is how the partitions look like in Win 7:
The reason why the Ubuntu drive is FAT32 is because I tried formatting the drive while in 'Try Ubuntu'-mode. It didn't work with NTFS either. The harddisk is a Samsung HM251JJ ATA. Why can't the Ubuntu installation read my partitions? There's even a partition ready for it. And as I wrote I have looked at a great deal of threads but can't find out what to do.
I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?
I am using jaunty. I have it installed in a 80 GB ext3 HDD. (This is sdb) I have another 500 GB. Its NTFS. (This is sda) It has 3 partitions. Download, Movies, Dump. They are probably sda1, sda2 and sda3 respectively. Few days ago when I was using intrepid, all three partitions were showing in the Places menu. But I was being able to mount Movies and Dump. Not the Download one. It was continuously saying 'unable to mount'. Now, after fresh installation of jaunty (not upgraded from intrepid) only Download partition is showing in the Places menu. There is no option for the other two partitions.
I had tried many distros over the years but settled on Ubuntu for the last two or three, unfortunately the new version of Ubuntu (Natty) has prompted me to make the change again. To keep access to all my Ubuntu docs e.t.c. I installed Fedora 14 on a seperate partition and hey presto, there's the Ubuntu partition for me to read from, problem is that my laptop still just boots straight into Fedora, this is ok on my laptop but I wanted to make the switch on my desktop as well which has the wife's Windows partition on it, not being able to boot into that would cause eruptions! The problem is that Fedora hasn't installed a Grub menu.

On my laptop I have Windows and Ubuntu, and I use Ubuntu very often. How can I auto-mount the NTFS partitions once I run my Ubuntu without the need to manually ask to mount it and confirm with the root password each time and for each partition?
i want to mount at kubuntu startup some ntfs drives now, i have, on dolphin, to click the ntfs partitions to mount them and after doing that, this lines are included on /etc/mtab
but when i add that lines to /etc/fstab and reboot, i can't access the ntfs drives. dolphin says than only "root" can mount /dev/sda1 on /media/WD10EADS (for example) i tried this too:
I have U1004 dual boot with MSW7 and sometimes want to mount those NTFS partitions for mostly reading operations. Ubuntu makes it easy by a single click in Nautilus. How to change this behavior and allow mount NTFS partitions with user's password only, like sudo behavior, for example? In addition, how to mount them read-only?
Note: I mount those NTFS partitions occasionally and there is nothing in fstab about it.
I am having a dual boot setup with Lucid Lynx and Windows 7. I want to automatically mount the NTFS partitions whenever I login to Lucid. I am looking for a graphical tool to set this up. Kindly suggest one.
How can I hide NTFS partitions so that can't be mounted?I noticed when I'm working on Ubuntu that I can delete files on my Windows NTFS partition, I think that's a risk
I was running Windows XP SP3 when one of my drives (or partitions) suddenly wasn't accessible. I booted into an old ubuntu Live CD I had (version 8.X) and tried mounting it. I could see the other partitions at this time. I rebooted the machine a couple of times (for normal reasons) and after a particular reboot none of my partitions were present! All seemed to have gone! I didn't do anything except mount the partition from Ubuntu Live CD. Made no write operations .
fdisk -l gives me this:

I originally had 6 partitions (including my primary). What do I make of the above screen and how do I proceed? Mot of testdisk documentation says "Choose the paritions to recover..." but I do not have a partition. What do I do to recover my data? I don't mind reformatting my entire HDD, but I need to get some jpegs and movie files off it first.
I am trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on an system which already has XP installed. I had used Ubuntu earlier but when I installed XP ( in an attempt to dual boot) I seem to have lost the Ubuntu Installation. But the problem is GParted or the Ubuntu installer dont recognize the existing partitions but instead see it as an empty unallocated drive. I have a 120GB hard disk. Below is the extract after fdisk:
