I've recently purchased a VPS to run a private server on. I installed gnome and configured it to run on TightVNC to access from my home computer. Whenever I try to type certain letters such as a lower case "s" it instead accesses the shutdown menu at the top right corner. This is disabling me from finishing my server and downright frustrating.

View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday, after browsing for a while, my keyboard suddenly started to show different characters than typed. The keys are just typing different letters than pressed. For example, the j displays a 1, the k displays a 2, and so on. This only happens on the x server. On the terminal, before starting the x server, the keyboard works just fine.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.
After installing lots of stuff from the main repo (letters Q though U). I, apon starting to catalog the missing software that V-Z needed (and I did not have) I found that open office would not print letters on the screen. I tried rebooting (the computer)and reinstalling (open office is what I reinsalled) and nothing worked. I then tried to type on to a txt document using Kwrite and it wored at first then it started to type symbols and a pop up on the lower left showed the symbols then ABC etc. I clicked on ABC and Kwrite worked but open office did not. If it helps I installed some program that had to do whith typing python. I need to know the following
1:Is it a bug or my mistake?
2:How do I get open office up and running?
I reinstalled Ubuntu after a disastrous install of gnome 3. I installed the mscore fonts etc. When I select a ms true type font I just see a row of squares instead of letters
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have added a Latvian keyboard layout to my Ubuntu 9.10 system (Russian as the system language). I cannot type Latvian letters with diacritical marks. I chose an apostrophe-based keyboard layout, so that I get the letter I need by pressing an apostrophe before. For example, to get ā, I would press 'a.The problem is, when I press ' followed by a letter or space bar, nothing appears on the screen. I continue typing as normal, but each time I press an apostrophe, the next character I press displays nothing on the screen. I have tried installing a Latvian language pack through System -> Administration -> Language Support. It was generally a useful addition. But it did not solve the problem. I still could not type Latvian. After that, I tried removing the Latvian layout from settings and adding it again. It did not help. I tried removing the layout, restarting my computer, and adding the layout back. The problem was not resolved.
I have tried different Lativan layouts (with tilde, with F, and standard). I had the same problem regardless of the layout I used. I browsed dozens of forum threads, and in one of them I found a workaround for this problem. For example, to type �, I hold down Shift and Control together, and while holding them press u0160 (because 0160 is a hex code for � in the character map). The first 0 is not significant, so to save time I type u160. I looked up the hex codes for the letters I need in Applications -> Accessories -> Character Map. In that application, at the bottom of the window, for each letter there is a code U+(four hex digits) e.g. U+012A. I wrote out all the codes I need on a small paper slip and stuck it to my monitor.Entering symbols this way is rather inconvenient. But at least it is possible.How to enter Latvian letters using just a Latvian keyboard layout? Is it a bug I should file? Would be great to find out.
Recently I faced a problem in typing in English in OpenSuse 11.3.When I try to type in English it shows me Greek letter and worse than that I think it is really Greek (not only in font) because when I enter my passwords or try to type a command in terminal I get error,I tested with UK and USA and all other English languages and I still have this problem. I even do reset in my keyboard layout setting and in KDE setting but it didn't help.

It appears very blocky and some of the letters run into each other, regardless of font chosen. Here is a pic of the issue: Has anyone any ideas as to what is going wrong? I've gone through the 'Preferences' on the terminal window but nothing I change helps.

I just installed Fedora 13 and i noticed a very annoying problem. I cannot type in Cyrillic in any of GNOME`s applications, however i can type in Cyrillic in other programs - like Firefox for example. I`ve tried in Rhythmbox, network manager (the configuration dialogs), gedit, nautilus, etc. I`ve also tried in Firefox where it works and for now is my only non GNOME application. The curios thing is that Cyrillic does work in gnome-terminal... I am currently using Bulgarian phonetic traditional layout but i`ve also tried with Russian and Macedonian without success. My Fedora installation is fully updated.

How does Gnome assign an icon to a file type? View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have an issue like this: We print PDFs from a Linux box to a printer attached to a Windows machine. Problem is when we print from the Windows the printout comes perfectly with the font bold and clear, but when printing from the Linux box the font is very FAINT and we can see dots in the fonts.
We tried changing the PDF to a text file (i.e. we created text file with the report) with the -o cpi=5 option and still it does not come out properly. Now the font gets bigger, but we can see dots in the font and it is not bold.
Any way to show the permissions with numbers (777) instead of with letters (drwxrwxrwx) using "ls" command or any other command ?

I get asked what the drives are (CD and Hard Disk) with abbreviations like hda, sda, etc. I was able to determine the Hard Drive as /dev/sda, by using <Shift>-PgUp/PgDn, but could not find what the CD drive was.

In vim I see that matra & letter are not positioned correctly. Here is screenshot post.jpg. I am using 'Akshar Unicode' . 'Monospace' does not help either. Otherwise , what font you use?

And I want to be able to pipe it to sort on that third column, by letter first, then number. But I keep coming getting files sorted like:
(field separations all start at same place, so columns are not jagged like above.)
I have read the sort man pages, and have tried -n for the numbers, and -k for the position to start sorting, among other things. I also tried inputting a second position to start sorting, which sort should supposedly refer to if the two entries are identical at the first place being compared, but it seems to just ignore the second one. I just can't get it to sort the numbers properly...
For now I am manually opening the file in emacs and changing them around, needless to say, very time consuming.
It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

I was doing some thing on networking on virtual machine (rhel 3 as guest os) and winxp as host .. now when i started my guest os (linux) the login page letters (like username and password) size became very large so that i could not see them (crossed the screen) .
View 1 Replies View RelatedI put a text file on my desktop and added a couple lines of text with gedit. File type shows text/plain. Double-click opens the file in gedit which is what I want. I'm using the file to temporarily hold some snips of code that I copy from file to file, but when I copy some html into the file and save it, now file properties show it's text/html and a double-click opens the file in firefox, which isn't what I want. Is there some way to keep the file type from changing itself?

In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)
