View 1 Repliesi have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Kubuntu 7 for my neighbors in CT. He is an military retiree and I didn't charge him. Now I've moved and can't help them any more. It appears they attempted a dist-upgrade and borked it.
The task is: Back up user files to a USB stick. Install Lubuntu as base (they have the CD) + help them to install software they need. The HW is something like AMD 1.3 GHz with 512 MB of RAM (of my memory serves me correctly), nothing exotic. Standard internet connection via DSL modem with built-in NAT router.
I have a problem with GUI under SuSE. As root I can enter but as normal user I can't. So the splash occurs I put user name and password but the system try to enter and later it comes back. I try from CLI, I make startx from command line, the same situation. Sometime the system informs me about a error (a temporary file from /tmp(.X0~ )I must remove, I did but next time it tells me that it can't load one module (it gives me a number).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to understand these two examples for setting up user-callback option in back in time application. I am trying to modify this to suit my needs, Back in time homepage has some basic info, but very terse, same with the man page. The following two examples are the only references I could find. first one from here - [URL] I don't want email to be sent, just an update to the log file will be fine.

Whenever I'm running my application process, I've 1M physical memory usage is increasing for every 2 hours. This I observed using 'free -m' command. But 'top' command did not showing any increase 'RSS' size.It is same as it was started initially.Even though I stopped my process, the increased memory was not released back. If I start my application process then again memory usage start increasing by 1M for every 2 hours. increase of memory usage observer with 'free' and that too when my application is running, but top command is not showing any change in the RSS sizeIf my application is leaking any memory which is allocated by new/malloc, that should be released back whenever my application exit and the size increase will be show through top command for that process, right? This is not happeningThis proves that there is no potential leaks in my process. But why physical memory is increasing when only my process is running?

View 11 Replies View RelatedAfter a disastrous foray into LDAP I restored NIS on a very simple network run by a very simple operator. Everything now works except for YaST on the NIS master. I can't manage NIS users in YaST any more. The option 'show NIS users' is now absent from the 'filter' button up in YaST "User and Group Management" So, after following the YaST route to LDAP there seems no way back...
These are OpenSUSE 11.3 boxes and the slave NIS server can't [obviously enough] delete expired NIS users on the master, although it sees them fine. Disabling or changing NIS server or client on the Master simply restores the 'wrong' settings - nothing is erased or cleaned. How do I clean up NIS controls so YaST sees it properly? or What do I need to do to restore NIS group & user control to YaST?

1. My laptop automatically get logged in without asking user name and password.
2. I tried to change password for newly created user and root user using graphical way but it does not work.
2. I can perform administrator task using only OEM user which is default inbuilt user of mint.
How can make my laptop to ask password when mint get booted? How to change password for other users?
I've looked everywhere but I can't find where to change the default box for incoming mail, or am I on the wrong track. It's a nuisance having to change folders and I can't configure wastebin to empty on exit. And I can't get kmail to import from evolution. Do I have to go to the evolution storage and do it manually, and if so, how do I do that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using the sudo command to log on locally as another user by the following command:
sudo -u theotheruser -s
or
sudo -u theotheruser sh
As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user. However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory. Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.
I'm developing an application in which one user must run java software that I'm compiling as another user. I wanted to give user A permission to see the bin direcory of my workspace, which is in the home directory of user B. I was wondering how can this be done? I gave the bin direcotry full read/execute premissions, but since it's in my home directory user A can't navigate to it.
I know there are a few ways I could get around the problem but they arn't very elegant. I was wondering if there is a simple method for giving a user access to a specific directory without giving access to all the parent directories. I tried symbolic link but user A still can't access it, and a hard link to a directory isn't allowed in Linux. I don't feel like making a hard link to every single file in the bin directory, and I'm not sure that would work anyways, since every recompile overwrites them.
What is the difference between creating a "regular" user and creating a "system" user on Linux?
For example:
Code:
adduser john
Code:
adduser --system john
Similarly it seems there are normal groups and system groups. Doing an internet search and reading man pages does not give much information on the whole concept of system and regular user/group.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a Linux command that can change ownership of all files belonging to a given user, preferably in a targeted directory, to another specified user. My dream command would look something like this. chuser -R --olduser tom --newuser jerry
This is my scenario... I have a backup file (.tgz) with user and group information preserved in it. It was taken from a web server running Apache and MySQL. The files in the backup are from across the system and contain files from several different users and several system type accounts and it is key that when restored on the new server the settings are not lost. The problem is that the users on the machine the files are being restored to don't match the ones in the backup file. For instance both machines had a MySQL user but they have different user ids and there are several user ids that existed on both machines that belong to different users. This means there is no way to sync the users on the new machine to the ones on the old machine. I can find all the users files with the find command like this...
find /decompressed-backup-dir -uid 1050
or
find /decompressed-backup-dir -user tom
If, as I suspect, there is no way to do what I want with a single command then perhaps there is a way to pipe the results of the find command to another command to handle the ownership change?
I could do this with a PHP script but there are 4GB and tens of thousands of files in the backup so I don't want to use PHP or Perl but I would be happy with a shell script that could handle it.
i'm new to linux and just installed Ubuntu and decided to play around with it. i just executed
Code: useradd test which supposedly creates a folder in the home directory '/home/test' but when i look in there i can't see it i also did a
Code: grep test /etc/passwd which returns: 'test:x:1001:1001::/home/test:/bin/sh' which i believe means it is meant to exist.
Addendum: I have also now noticed that when i log in and log back in i have the option to login as 'test' but it prompts me for a password which i did not set :s

I have managed to open the hard drive and have enabled view hidden files so i can see all the files but i am unable to copy them due to permission errors
How would you make NIS user information override local user information on client systems? This is what I think is right? Add nis on the passwd registration file on the second line Is this correct?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to save some .c files. The Red Hat Linux 5.5 machine I am on has a DVD multi recorder drive in it. A cdrecord -scanbus gives me "4,0,0 400) 'TSSTcorp' 'DVD+-RW TS-L633C' 'D250' Removable CD-ROM".
When I add "/dev/dvdrw /mnt/dvd-rw iso9660 user, kudzu 0 0" to /etc/fstab and do a mount /mnt/dvd-rw, I get "mount: block device /dvd/dvdrw is write-protected, mounting read-only", "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/dvdrw, missing codepage or other error".
I go about this another way? All I need to do is save some source files to the dvd and restore them on another machine.

View 2 Replies View Related19:25 into this video has a question about back-ups:[URL].. it is basically asking how to save files from different sources (mac harddrive, windows harddrive, sd-card, cd's) and they want to ensure pictures from a digital camera dont get overwritten (there are multiple 001.jpg, 002.jpg, ... files -- maybe md5sum will help here).
i assume rsync would be good in this case but i am not sure what the syntax would be. i also assume that the rsync command is available for mac (i am more of an scp guy) but i have been proven wrong on assuming bash compatability between linux/ os-x before.
