Ubuntu :: Remove Windows 7 - Reintegrate Partition & Make The World A Better Place

May 24, 2010

Currently have a dual boot HTPC running windows 7 & ubuntu 9.10 , windows pulled "no longer a valid"on me after an update an i was left with a limited machine. I figure now is as good time as any to go full with a fully linux system. However, i am having some problems.

1) Windows 7 needs purged from my system.. like a cancer. I need to get rid of my sda1 windows partition. I gathered i will need gparted and grub2.. But will i need a Gpart liveCD? I need someone to take my though it.

I got and ran Gparted. My system seems to have 3 partitions with 2 unallocated spaces.

2) I will need to remount the windows partition after i reformate it and get rid of windows. I will likely need help with this as well. believe it is also worth noting that i believe wubi was used to put Ubuntu on this machine.

I wonder if anyone can advise me what the current steps would be?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mounting A Samba Share On Two Machines - Can't Place Anything Into The Folder

Apr 24, 2011

I'm having some trouble mounting a Samba share on my two Ubuntu machines. The Samba share is setup so that all files are readable and writable by everyone (it's only accessible via the local network). When I create a new folder on the share with either of my Ubuntu machines, the folder becomes non-writable by anyone ie. I can't place anything into the folder. I'm using the following command to mount the share:

[Code].....

I think the problem is with the way I'm mounting the share on my Ubuntu machines. If I go to the share using smb://192.168.1.160 in a file browser, I can create new folders which are readable and writable by everyone. But, if I create the new folder where it's mounted at /mnt/backup, no-one can modify or change it.

Networking :: Networking Is Not Getting Out Of The Dosbox Instance \ Needs To Have Some Config In Place To Link Networking Over To Dosbox?

Jan 31, 2011

I am attempting to setup and old BBSinside of DosBOXI've built one of the DosBOX Megabuilds, with the NE2000 patch. It uses libpcap in order to piggy back on top of the system's NIC. All of the dosbox side appears to be working. My system comes up, gets the MAC address i told it to use, i can load a packet driver in dosbox, all of that seems well and good. The issue, i think, is on the linux side. It's built on a Fedora 14 box. I'm getting the feeling that networking isnt getting out of the dosbox instance. Does it seem possible that fedora needs to have some config in place to link networking over to dosbox?

Ubuntu Installation :: Place GRUB 2 On The MBR?

May 15, 2011

I have the following setup
a) 1st sata hdd - Ubuntu 9.04 (32 bit)
b) 2nd sata hdd - Win7 (64 bit)

I am on GRUB legacy. I am going to do a clean install and replace Ubuntu 9.04 with Ubuntu 10.10. I plan to leave my Win7 install alone. When I am installing Ubuntu 10.10 over Ubuntu 9.04, where should I place GRUB 2? The choices I've always seen: i) MBR or ii) boot sector of Ubuntu

I do not recall which setup I have now but I can confirm that when I start the computer, I get a GRUB menu that lets me choose Ubuntu or Windows. Ubuntu is the default if no choice is made within 20 seconds. I like that setup and want to replicate it with GRUB 2, if possible. If that is what I want, then I should place GRUB 2 on the MBR, correct or not? Note, I do not intend to install any other OSes. In other words, my 1st sata hdd will only have ubuntu and my 2nd sata hdd will only have windows.

Ubuntu :: Can't Place Certain App Launchers In Dock

May 15, 2011

Some app launchers can't be placed in the dock. The ones i have trouble with are the three games from Humble Frozenbyte Bundle, namely Shadowgrounds, Shadowgrounds Survivor and Trine. Their launcher icons look fine on dash, but when i start dragging them and the dash disappears, the icon turns into a question mark. Items on dock make room for the question mark icon, but after dropping it, it disappears and the dock icons return to where they were.

I guess there's something non-standard about the launchers. The games are installed under my home folder, and the game icons are xpm files in the game folder, like /home/veepee/.trine/Trine.xpm for example. The executables are in the same folder, like /home/veepee/.trine/trine-bin.

Too bad the print screen key doesn't take screenshots when the dash is up. What's up with that anyway?

Ubuntu Servers :: Put A Few Login Restrictions In Place?

Jun 3, 2010

I've got Ubuntu server 10.04 set up and I wanted to make a few restrictions. It's pretty much just acting as a VMware server at the moment, and there are some users I've created who I only want to be able to be able to log into the VMware infrastructure web interface. I want to make sure these users can't log in via SSH, FTP, or the console itself. I understand how to block them from logging in via SSH by using DenyUsers, and I added these users to the /etc/ftpusers file to lock them out of FTP, but how can I block them from logging in at the console itself?

I tried locking the user out by editing the /etc/passwd file, but the problem is that by doing this, it also prevents the user from being able to log into the VMware web interface.

The user's entry in /etc/passwd looks like this: bsmith:*:1005:1005:Bob Smith,,,:/home/bsmith:/bin/bash

Ubuntu Installation :: Place 'root' On Manually Created LVM?

Mar 10, 2010

I'm just trying to install Ubuntu server 9.10 to a logical volume manager partition. I have two physical disks of 250GB - each has a 10GB primary partition and 240GB logical partition for LVM

I created partions using 'manual partitioning'.
It shows:

LVM VG grpA 240GB
LVM VG grpB 240GB
SCSI1 (sda) 250GB
#5 logical 240GB K lvm

[Code].....

I want '/' (i.e root) to be on a logical volume in the lvm 'grpA' (on disk sda).

But the installer does not offer creation of Logical Volumes or their format - only seems to go as low as volume group. If I try continuing installer complains that 'no root file system is defined'.

Does anyone know how I create the LV and install with root there?

(On another machine with 9.04 I used the guided partitioning with use entire disk and lvm - that just worked putting root in the lvm... but this current machine needs a specific layout).
