Aug 30, 2010I'm attempting to install the driver for my atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet adapter (in my Lenovo laptop) on my newly installed RHEL5 system (it's not currently being recognized).
I tried using: 'make install' but hit an error "Makefile:61: *** Linux kernel source not found."
After this, I tried: 'sudo yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers'
To rectify this, but hit this error "No package kernel-devel available" (and the same for the headers). What should I do?

Oct 14, 2010I'm trying to upgrad from kernel 2.6.32.9 to 2.6.34.3 and I'm having problems.The boot finished with that old gem "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init !"I suspect that it's something to do with my PATA IDE driver because there have been kernel changes in this area.My problem is all the boot messages scroll off the top of the screen before I can read them and it's no use saying look at dmesg or /var/log/messages because the root fs isn't there - another reason why I think it's to do with the drivers.So my question is, is there some way I can slow down the boot process so that I have a chance of reading the messages ?

The current driver I have installed in Linux for it is able to display messages by sending them to a script as an argument separated by spaces.Example: the command /opt/asusg50oled/utils/notify.sh Hi Everybody "Hello World" displays on the oled screen:

If another message is sent before the old ones disappear and it reverts to status info, it pushes off the top message. Example: less than 30 seconds after the previous example, /opt/asusg50oled/utils/notify.sh "Bananas have potassium" is executed:

What I want to do is have kernel messages (the kind you see by running dmesg) forwarded to this script. For example, when I insert a USB drive, the following information would show on the OLED screen as they're logged:........

Feb 22, 2011I got home today to find that my KDE login screen would not let me log in. It said the authentication process failed or something and I needed to terminate the screen lock process manually. So I go over to another virtual terminal and try to log in. As soon as I enter my user name, a bunch of errors come up and I am unable to log in. "This can't be good" I think to myself, and reboot.
I am greeted by this error upon booting:
The error says that it says it cannot find /sbin/init. I loaded up a Ubuntu live CD and verified that /sbin/init is indeed present and all my other files still seem to be there. I tried booting into arch fallback on grub but that didn't work either. Midway through the day I SSHed my desktop from my phone and started it doing an upgrade. I was able to login.

Aug 8, 2010Besides finding out the process ID and typing kill ID? Ctrl+C doesn't work. If I start my java program (which runs in a loop), Ctrl+C only types ^C and doesn't do anything. I have to open up another terminal, log in, find the ID, and kill it.

Jun 20, 2010I installed a fresh copy of Slackware 13.1 (stable) on one of my media servers and I am experiencing something strange.... When I power up the machine, I see the kernel booting, no errors, until it gets to the point where it says:
And then randomly freeze there.... Well the machine is not totally frozen because the cursor still blinks. But it will never continue... Like I said, this happens on a random basis... After a reset, it might go through or simply stall at the same spot.
I remember after installing Slack 13.1, I rebooted the machine but forgot to remove the DVD from the player, so the install routine started up, and froze at the same point when it was loading the kernel for the setup programs...
My mobo is a MSI k9N platinum.
I never had this problem before.... (well I never used 13.1 before). Since I got this machine, I used slack 12.2 and slack 13-current with success.
This problem makes the machine extremely unreliable because I intent to use it as a backup and media server, so chances I will WOL the machine and use it remotely... if that happens.

The other day we started receiving rejected emails sent from my server to a yahoo email address that is no longer active that contained users login information. I am trying to find the process that is sending these emails. So far its been like finding a needle in a haystack. The email that is being sent is appending the login information each time it is sent so there must be a local file that contains this information. I have tried using grep and find without any luck.

However, I noticed that there are some difference in the headers files that get generated with the above command as compared to the header files that are available from Debian repo. For example, the header files for 2.6.24 kernel have files like:

As you can see from above output, files like Makefile_32, Makefile_32.cpu are not present, if I generate kernel headers files using the make-kpkg command as mentioned in the beginning of the post. I happened to notice the above issue, while I was trying to compile a out-of-tree kernel module and the "make" command for those sources (some graphics card drm module) worked with the default header files (linux-headers-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686) but did not work with (linux-headers-2.6.24-generic-ide) because it did not find the Makefile_32. Although I was able to fix the problem by copying the Makefile_32 from linux-headers-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 but I would like to know why there is a difference. This is bit of a concern because it unnecessarily breaks the out-of-tree module compilation process because of trivial reasons.

Jun 9, 2011I have recently installed the Maverick backport kernel (2.6.35 - from the lucid-updates/main repo) and while I was at it I also manually (through synaptic) got rid of some old kernels. I made sure that I kept the current Lucid kernel though (that was working fine). All seemed well (although I didn't actually check - just no errors) so I rebooted.On reboot I have lost all my Ubuntu kernel options!
I rebooted with a live cd, mounted, etc and ran

but it doesn't seem to find any kernels!

Even reinstalled burg (used to use it but it got broken by a kernel update long ago and never bothered to fix it as I only use Linux these days anyway)Funny thing is that BURG finds the kernels and reports no problem, but then drops to the grub-error prompt on boot.

1. Created a child process from parent process using 'fork()'
2. Sent a signal 'SIGALRM' from child process to parent process using 'sigqueue' function.
(The Third parameter of 'siqueue' function contains the message (message msg) which the child process wants to send to the parent process.'msg' is a stucture instance containing a) pid of child and b) string) 5. Print the 'msg' sent by child process inside the signal handler function 'sig_action_function' of the parent process I am getting some junk value when this line is executed

Aug 12, 2010as we all know Process Scheduler does Process scheduling and its a process as well. I was just wondering that if this happens then the Process "Process Scheduler" should be a part of Process queue as well.
So if there are 5 process are there in Process queue & process scheduler is administrating them then since its also a process, once it puts a process under RUN state it should itself go inside queue because at one instant only one process can get executed on a processor. This is quite confusing for me. Please help me out. I tried to search on this but could not find any relevant topics.
