And, where I can find this information? I've always wondered if it was documented somewhere, or if there was an interface into the kernel to query for it.

General :: Tune2fs Says Couldn't Find Valid Filesystem Superblock

May 12, 2010

I'm logged into a server through the CLI and did a df -T and confirmed all my volumes are ext3. but when I do a tune2fs -l /dev/sde it tells me

tune2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006)
tune2fs: Permission denied while trying to open /dev/sde
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.

I don't have root access on the server, but is that why it's complaining, or is my syntax incorrect?

General :: Install PerlMagick - ImageMagick - Where Do I Find Values For LIB / INC

Jun 2, 2011

I downloaded, configured and installed ImageMagic-6.7 without too much trouble.

I'm trying to install the perl module Image::Magick, and using MCPAN just errors out big time.

I read in the docs for installing ImageMagic, that I need to edit the Makefile.PL in the PerlMagick directory before I can do a make / make install.

I'm supposed to change the LIBS and INC, but I have no idea what I'm supposed to change them to? Do I just add to what's there? Where do I find the values to add/change to?

I'm relatively experienced with UNIX and Linux, but this has me thrown for quite a loop, and it seemed like such a simple question. How would I go about finding the newest file in a file system? I thought something like:

Code:

ls -ltr `find /usr -type f`

would work, but I seem to be exceeding the argument maximum for ls:

ksh: 0403-029 There is not enough memory available now

I thought something involving xargs might work, but I really suck with that command.

CentOS 5 Networking :: No Hostname - Cannot Find Valid BaseURL For Repo

May 12, 2011

I have a server running centos 5 located in a datacenter. I am setting it up as a web server but haven't bothered to move the domain from my current registrar to the server as there are a lot of things I need to get done before that. I am having a problem where I couldn't install httpd. So i tried some of the basic fixes i knew as far as yum clean all and checking that my /etc/resolv.conf was ok. I have the two nameservers I am using listed there but I have no hostname set because I simply dont have the domain transferred or anything like that yet. Is that the reason I am having these issues. I installed the system with a network install fine about a month ago so im not sure why I am having problems now. When i try to ping centos.org I get an unknown host www.centos.org error. I tried changing the resolv.conf to have localhost as the hostname and I still have the same issues. I havent made any changes to anything that would potentially cause this.

My etc/resolv.conf looks like this:
search
nameserver 12.34.567.8
nameserver 12.34.566.8

Also it seems the problem may have got worse after yum clean-all because before that when I would try 'yum install httpd' it would show the files and filesizes and ask to install, when I would select yes It would give an error showing it could not find the fastestmirror. Now it doesn't give any file size or files or an option to approve the install. It just responds with an error saying it could not retrieve mirrorlist

General :: Find Out How To Load Graphic User Interface In Jaunty

May 20, 2011

I am a newbie to Jaunty, so please forgive my descrip. terminology. I am experiencing a great amount of grief with my Jaunty install. I can no longer get a login screen in Jaunty. When I try to boot normally for this install I get an unclean shutdown screen & it goes into the "checking drive" mode. I uninstalled some applications such as has to do with touchpad, remote desktop, xorg-driver-fglrx etc. I reinstalled xorg-driver-fglrx, which I later found out that I do not need. I have an AMD64 HP system with ATI graphics onboard.

I need to find out how to load graphic user interface in Jaunty. Some of the necessary files have been completely removed by me & I need to reload the repositories and update my current install. The partition is encrypted but I have been able to login with the username & password for THIS encrypted install using the "repair broken system" part of the GRUB screen.

How do I go into the terminal and load repositories, and maybe the kernel so I can do an update/upgrade? I do not know if upgrade is part of what I need to do I wanna keep my Jaunty install so I can access 50G of data that is on this install. I have made no backup of this data!!!

I am able to login to my install using my username & password after I get to the "#" prompt, (option "fix broken system" in GRUB) so I know login can be done under username of install. I just need to know what to TYPE into the terminal to restore the necessary files in the right place to make it run. (Is it called terminal at that point?)

General :: External Drive Read Only - WARNING! Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage

Mar 24, 2010

I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mounting An Edirol R-09HR Digital Audio Recorder - VFS: "Can't Find A Valid FAT File System"

Apr 2, 2010

I'm having problems mounting an Edirol R-09HR digital audio recorder (as a USB drive, to read the recording files) on a system running openSUSE 11.2. fdisk or other partitioning tools recognize the device as a "W95 FAT32" drive with a filesystem code of 0b, apparently. I was under the impression that mounting this as a vfat file system should work, but the mount command dies complaining "FAT: bogus number of reserved sectors" and "VFS: Can't find a valid FAT file system." This happens even with a freshly formatted card in the recorder. The device mounts properly with Windows XP systems and late-model Ubuntu/Kubuntu systems, Any clews as to what I'm doing wrong here?

Ubuntu Networking :: Find Preferences On The Filesystem?

I modified /etc/resolv.conf to just use Google DNS and it works great, but then something overwrites it with my router DNS. I guess that's a generated file, but what do I edit to change the generator?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Does Not Find Filesystem?

Jan 11, 2010

Here is my problem. Grub2 outputs error: unknown filesystem. Then when i use "ls" command it outputs this:
(hd0), (hd0,4), (hd0,2), (hd1) and when i "ls (hd0,4)/ or any of them it says: error: no such disk

So, heres my story. I dual boot vista and ubuntu from my main 320GB hdd. Today i tried to fresh install 9.10 on a different external hdd. The 500GB hard drive already had two partitions, a 30GB Fat32 and the rest NTFS. both of these partitions had about 17GB used on them. I installed off a cd and i shrunk the NTFS to allow for more partitions. I made a 4gb swap as logical at the end then a primary ext4 / partition in front of it. The drives are Fat32 sdg0, ntfs sdg1, then an sdg3 (which im confused about and says is extension), and sdg4 (with linux) and sdg5 (swap). When finished with the partitions it asked me to select where to mount the ntfs and i said /windows. When i tried to boot up it did not recognize my external apparently because it was plugged in via firewire. I switched to usb and it booted but then i got the error message in grub. Also, when i switched from firewire to usb the drive changed from sdb to sdg. How do i fix this problem? Will reinstalling ubuntu fix this? Is there an easier way? I tried reinstalling grub but it did not work.

Installation :: Cannot Find Filesystem While Booting Any Distro

Jan 31, 2010

I've been playing around with an old laptop and a hand full of Linux distros. I found that each Linux has a kernel "vmlinuz" and a initrd "initrd.gz" no matter how you boot the distro it uses these to files. I have CrunchBang Installed on my laptop I put a copy of the ubuntu live disk in the location
/home/user-pc/ubuntu/

I added a new boot option for grub It looks like this
Title Ubuntu
kernel /home/user-pc/ubuntu/casper/vmlinuz
initrd /home/user-pc/ubuntu/casper/initrd.gz

This boots like a normal cd only problem is while its booting it tells me it cant find the file System. This happened for every single Linux distro I tried to boot. Is there something I am missing here is there a way to tell the boot peramiter where the file system is I think what it means by file system is the "filesystem.squashfs" file.

I have 2 questions
1. Is there anyway to tell the grub loader that this is the file system. To make the live CD boot properly.
2. How do CD's work is it not the same?
