Fedora Networking :: Why Primary Interface Is Eth1 Instead Of Eth0?
Jan 31, 2010I have two network interfaces on my computer but only one of them is connected to an Ethernet cable. Until now on every Fedora release, the activated primary interface has been named as eth0 and everything has always worked well without any problem. Recently I switched to Fedora Core 12 and surprisingly I observed that for the first time, my primary interface has been considered by the system to be eth1 instead of eth0. I tried to replace the content of ifcfg-eth0 by ifcfg-eth1, yet system gave me an error that there was MAC address mismatching. I conserved their MAC addresses in their files and just replaced other connection parameters ( such as IP ADDR, NETWORK, NETMASK, etc.) but it did't work. When I do "server network restart", the command blocks.
As I try to install oracle on this system, regarding the fact that oracle requires static network configuration on the primary network interface, I don't know how to proceed in order to set eth0 as my primary interface (or rather set the current eth1 to eth0 because it is actually eth1 that refers to my activated primary network card).Just one more time, I would like to remark, that with previous versions of the Fedora Core, on the same computer (with the very same two network cards) I never had problem and I had installed oracle on the system with success, having the statically configured eth0 correctly detected by the system.

The Completely Fair Queuing (cfq) scheduler in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5appears to have worse I/O read performance than in version 4. It appears as though the Completely Fair Queuing I/O scheduler (cfq) has a regression and thus exhibits reduced read-side throughput which can affect performance for both local and NFS mounted file systems.
One way to mitigate this is to set the cfq's slice_idle parameter to zero. To change this value, execute the following command echo 0 > slice_idle in the /sys/block directory appropriate for your situation, as shown below:
echo 0 > /sys/block/hda/queue/iosched/slice_idle
We are using NFS file systems in RHEL 5.3. I would like to know how to find which /dev/Device is being used by the NFS file systems, so that I could try setting the slice_idle to '0' to see if there is any difference in performance? In /etc/fstab I only see the actual NAS volumes for the NFS file systems.

General :: Find Out How To Load Graphic User Interface In Jaunty
May 20, 2011I am a newbie to Jaunty, so please forgive my descrip. terminology. I am experiencing a great amount of grief with my Jaunty install. I can no longer get a login screen in Jaunty. When I try to boot normally for this install I get an unclean shutdown screen & it goes into the "checking drive" mode. I uninstalled some applications such as has to do with touchpad, remote desktop, xorg-driver-fglrx etc. I reinstalled xorg-driver-fglrx, which I later found out that I do not need. I have an AMD64 HP system with ATI graphics onboard.
I need to find out how to load graphic user interface in Jaunty. Some of the necessary files have been completely removed by me & I need to reload the repositories and update my current install.The partition is encrypted but I have been able to login with the username & password for THIS encrypted install using the "repair broken system" part of the GRUB screen.
How do I go into the terminal and load repositories, and maybe the kernel so I can do an update/upgrade? I do not know if upgrade is part of what I need to do I wanna keep my Jaunty install so I can access 50G of data that is on this install. I have made no backup of this data!!!
I am able to login to my install using my username & password after I get to the "#" prompt, (option "fix broken system" in GRUB) so I know login can be done under username of install. I just need to know what to TYPE into the terminal to restore the necessary files in the right place to make it run. (Is it called terminal at that point?)

General :: Reading Partitions On Non-primary HDD?
Apr 28, 2010I have a laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 installed. It will not boot to the login screen. If I remove this HDD and connect it as a secondary drive to another PC running Ubuntu, will I be able to access the files on this HDD? There is a lot of data which I haven't backed up which I need to retreive. I don't think the hard drive has failed.
