I have installed RHEL 4 32 - bit on sda3 and after that , installed installed RHEL 64-bit on to a partition sda 5. Now i am unable to boot into RHEL 32-bit. I've been asked to test which file systems of the following work better for disk I/O.EXT3 EXT4 JFS BtrFS and any other ones that I can find that work under RHEL the out-of-box install I have done allows me to format my volumes with EXT2/3 but not ext4 or any others. The Completely Fair Queuing (cfq) scheduler in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5appears to have worse I/O read performance than in version 4. It appears as though the Completely Fair Queuing I/O scheduler (cfq) has a regression and thus exhibits reduced read-side throughput which can affect performance for both local and NFS mounted file systems.
One way to mitigate this is to set the cfq's slice_idle parameter to zero. To change this value, execute the following command echo 0 > slice_idle in the /sys/block directory appropriate for your situation, as shown below:
echo 0 > /sys/block/hda/queue/iosched/slice_idle
We are using NFS file systems in RHEL 5.3. I would like to know how to find which /dev/Device is being used by the NFS file systems, so that I could try setting the slice_idle to '0' to see if there is any difference in performance? In /etc/fstab I only see the actual NAS volumes for the NFS file systems.
I've been asked by my boss to install RHEL 5.4 onto a HP Proliant DL380 G3 which we have here. Now I'm a total linux newbie but can figure my way around most things but this has got me stumped.
I have downloaded the RHEL 5.4 i386 DVD iso and burnt it OK. But when I boot from the CD in the server it doesn't recongise it. I put the DVD into any other server/PC and it boots fine. The server also boots fine from other CDs'DVDs?
Anyway, I thought I would try the boot.iso instead so I burnt this and the DL380 boots fine. I try the default install option, select country/keyboard layout/ select local CDROM as the install type and this is the problem now.
It ejects the boot CD so I put in the RHEL 5.4 DVD and it keeps saying:- the red hat enterprise linux server cd was not found in any of your cdrom drives I have reburnt the DVD and same problem. I have also tried creating a VM with the DVD and this boots and installs fine in VMWare so I know the DVD is good.
Problem installing graphical mode of red hat 5 on virtual software. But text mode is getting installed but its also taking more then 1hr. I've adjusted all the recommended options regarding memory,hard disk ,etc. Also please suggest me good virtual software for red hat enterprise Linux 5.

I assume my gcc is not where my install is looking for it,probably wrong though.
when i try to install it via live CD it wont find my HDD and skips to the partition page, where nothing is displayed. i tried installing it straight away, and from the testing part too.
