General :: Figure Out How To Properly Remove The Program

Mar 12, 2010

I just downloaded a new app(vrs call logging) which doesn't work very well. I'm just trying to figure out how to properly remove the program. I've drilled down to the "uninstall.sh" but it will not run the uninstall program.

Apperently this button is to paste, but every time i scroll, it makes my life miserable, especially when im reading a lengthy page in firefox. I cannot figure out how to program the buttons. Ive googled, and seen some programs that MIGHT help. but this seems to be something that is built in to the OS. Fedora :: Wine - Can't Run Program Properly

Nov 19, 2009

I only use it to run a program off of CD, not an installed application. This same program ran fine with wine under Fedora 10 & 11, but not on Fedora 12. I installed wine with:

Code: yum install wine as root. When I try to execute the program, it shows the little bouncing wine icon and all, but then wine disappears. Also, when I looked at the wine configuration, the configuration program crashed/hung. I had to kill it via the System Monitor. I'm on a KDE desktop with hardware acceleration, and Fedora 12 x86_64.

I am attempting to load the program on Sun Virtual Box, which is like VMare's Workstation, and the prompt consistently reads error when attempting to install. Also the progress bar on the Live USB loader never stops even after it the cmd prompt says it is complete.

Fedora :: Graphics In The Program Maple Doesn't Work Properly With The Default Drivers

Nov 1, 2009

I had originally followed the advice at Mauriat Miranda's Fedora Nvidia Driver Install Guide [URL] for installing nvidia's display driver on my HP Pavilion system 64 bit running Fedora 11. I had used his first method which just installs the relevant kernel module kmod-nvidia from RPMFusion. He also suggested an alternate method: obtaining Nvidia's installer NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run and using that. I downloaded it from Nvidia, but I didn't run it.

I recently lost X. This had happened previously after a kernel upgrade, and I just used grub to boot an earlier kernel to recover X, and then installed the upgraded kernel module to fix the problem. But this time, being deeply involved in something else, I panicked slightly, and, using dumb terminal mode I ran the Nvidia installer. It asked me to make various choices and in response to my answers, it decided to compile a new kernel module. This recovered X, but I then compounded things by installing the updated kmod-nvidia.

I realized afterwards that using both methods might create some conflicts, but X seemed to run properly. (I can tell because graphics in the program Maple doesn't work properly with the default drivers provided by Fedora 11.) Since then, when I restart nvidia, I get.

General :: Can't Seem To Figure Out \ Script A Simple Closed Loop?

Jul 19, 2011

I think I can do it by brute force with a crontab entry for each of the 15 days at a time, but I'm not even sure I know how to do that.I'm trying to automate a process I do manually every day. That is, I execute the same command every day for 15 days running, manually changing the filename of the file by 1 each time, i.e. file.1.dmp, file.2.dmpThen after I reach the end of 15 days, I start again changing the filename being written back to the name of the first file I created 15 days ago. This overwrites the 15 files one a day for 15 days. That is, after I create the file.15.dmp, I (manually) change the name of the file being created back to file.1.dmp again.

I realize that this may not be descriptive enough to help me with getting an answer. I don't know how else to explain it. I'd be more than glad to fill in any details I've missed.I've thought about using a for loop, but it's been so long since I've had to do any programming I hesitate to go down that path. I've though about using the current date variable to change the filename, but how do I reset the script to start again after 15 days? The point of my exercise is to have a rolling backup/dump file for 15 days that I can restore from if needed.

Ubuntu :: Can't Remove A Shortcut Made By A Program

Jul 25, 2010

I recently installed Acetone ISO in the hopes of installing a program, but alas it doesn't do what I need it to (run the MDF file like a disk rather than showing all the files in it, and because this is a multi-disk thing I'm installing I'm kinda stuck now) and I noticed it would make a new virtual drive every time I mounted an image, and I wound up with four of them, and each one had its own shortcut on my desktop. Well, I removed the program and deleted the folder it created, but these shortcuts are still on my desktop. And they are UNTOUCHABLE!

The command line ls -al ~/Desktop/ will show everything on the desktop BUT THEM, they have no permissions, and cannot be moved, copied, or deleted, because Ubuntu can't find volume information on them. I reinstalled the program to see if anything would help, and I noticed that the drives would go away if I unmounted the image (I coulda sworn I told it to before, but it didn't want to...) but now these drives are errors to the program, and I still can't remove the shortcuts.

Slackware :: Get Rid Of All The Unneeded Dependencies When Remove A Program?

Jul 9, 2011

I'm using slackware 13.37 and I must say that I really like this distro and the biggest problem is the lack of dependency handling. This is something that bites you right away because you have this nice clean simple operating system but unless you really know what's dependent on what you have to install piles of stuff with lots of programs with duplicate functions. A minimal install option would be nice and I can see from some of the threads that even those with a good deal of experience have had a hard time doing a minimal install. I tried about ten times using different guides but I always ended up with something broken so now I have the full install running fine but with tons of stuff that I don't want or need including most of kde. Anyway, I don't think that the slackware people are going to change their minds about dependency handling anytime this century.

Although for those who have said that it's a FEATURE, I'd point out that all distros have this feature, JUST DON'T USE THEIR PACKAGE MANAGER! So with all that said, I think it's a shame about the lack of dependency handling but I still like slackware well enough to use it even though I find the dependency thing quite annoying. I know that there are people here that have a lot more experience than I do and maybe there are some tools that could make this business easier. So how do you go about removing programs? Debian has deborphan and Arch has pacman -Rd. When you remove a program in slackware, how do you then get rid of all the unneeded dependencies?
