Dec 31, 2009I have rented a remote dedicated fedora 7 system. The service provider provisioned the system and does not allow direct "root" access to the system.
I currently use putty to login into "user1", switch to "root" using su -, and then edit the file.
I would like to edit the "root" file directly from my home XP system which has a SFTP connection to the remote fedora 7 system (using Aptana RadRails).
I am not sure how to do that. I had 2 ideas but I am just guessing and afraid to proceed with so little knowledge.
I considered editing /etc/group and changing the line

to

Feb 4, 2011I use a linux machine at work and a mac at home. I can ssh from my machine at home to my work machine. But the only editor that I have access to on the command line then is vi, which I don't like.
Is there a way to use gedit on my mac to edit files remotely over an ssh connection?
This page says that it can be done, but I think that it assumes that you are using gedit on ubuntu. On my mac (os 10.5.8) I don't have the "bookmark" option when I click "connect to server".

For all the files I have to:
- delete all the row from the beginning of the file to the sentence "<img src="immagini/_navDxBottom.gif" />".
- delete all the rows from the sentence "<br clear="right" />" to the end of the file.
How can I do that?

Is there a clever & simple way to do this all in one command line?

Feb 28, 2010I am trying to install Fedora 10 on an old P3 Inspiron 5000. When I boot from the Live cd the screen is split into three sections and is hard to navigate. I am able to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and log out and log back in to proceed with the installation. The problem is when I finish the installation and reboot to the new OS it boots to the triple section mode again because my xorg.conf is not edited. To do any commands in Fedora I need to get through a brief user setup in which I cannot navigate through until I can see the screen better. Is there a way to boot to a graphical type safe mode so I can see the whole screen to finish the installation?
How can I access folders from the live cd to edit the installed files? This way I can edit the xorg.conf file before booting and all would be legible.

I need to be able to easily copy and paste text between emacs frames and use all the keyboard shortcuts, so putty and cygwin are out of the question. Oct 31, 2010Reading and revising LaTex 20-page documents seems to be much more easier with a printout (hardcopy) then reading them off a screen. However, I cannot edit the document in real-time (just scrabble comments on the paper) which is cumbersome.
So it there a tablet or even better an ebook device (with e-ink which is easier on the eyes) where I can read document similarly to a printout and edit them in real-time?

Nov 16, 2010Recently, my hard drive crashed. I was using XP and do not have my install discs (lost them 3 moves ago...). I make backups regularly and only lost roughly 3 days worth of material (nothing really important). On my other PC I've been running linux forever. I don't need windows and have installed a new HD in the PC and put fedora on there w/ no issues. Now historical email. There seems to be many workarounds for getting dbx files to mbox inside windows, but how would I accomplish this task without a windows install anywhere (Virtual installs are out as I do not have any install discs for windows anyways).
After a quick search, I only found one possible solution (in perl) and am looking for something that I don't have to program my self. I am a programmer by trade but have never programmed in perl (c++, FORTRAN, matlab, python... yes) and at this point, don't feel like learning new syntexs for this one problem (python has been my goto scripting language for everything linux...). Also if anyone has a link to a c++ lib(link to documentation?) that does the same thing... I might take a look at that and make a gui for it... then release it for others...
