General :: Unable To Change - Edit Html Files In New Ubuntu 9.04 - Apache Server

Oct 20, 2009

I suspect that this has come up numerous times, but I am new to Linux and I am setting up a new in-house server using Ubuntu 9.04 and Apache, etc. I can see the welcoming "It Works!" message when I log in via Firefox. I can see "index.html" when I FTP the server with the site name and password at /var/www. I can also see the -rw-r-r-- attributes, but I can't edit the HTML file or replace it. When I try to rename the "index.html" file.

I get the following message: "Request denied. Verify that the file or folder exists and that you have the necessary permissions on the server to perform the requested operation."

I haven't been able to determine where to enter the password or what changes I need to make to be able to work with the /var/www directory via FTP.

How can I access this directory in apache. i use apache 2.0.63.

Fedora :: How To Remotely Edit Root Files

Dec 31, 2009

I have rented a remote dedicated fedora 7 system. The service provider provisioned the system and does not allow direct "root" access to the system.

I currently use putty to login into "user1", switch to "root" using su -, and then edit the file.

I would like to edit the "root" file directly from my home XP system which has a SFTP connection to the remote fedora 7 system (using Aptana RadRails).

I am not sure how to do that. I had 2 ideas but I am just guessing and afraid to proceed with so little knowledge.

I considered editing /etc/group and changing the line
from
root:x:0:root

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache/PHP Set Root Directory Of Website?

Nov 27, 2010

In my website, I'm putting shared files in a "/global" folder. Both "styles.css" and "library.php" are in this global folder. HTML code seems to be working ok - the following bit works great to pick up a style sheet:

Code:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/global/styles.css" /> However PHP does not seem to understand my root directory. Using the following does not work:
Code:
include_once("/global/library.php");

I receive a "failed to open stream: No such file or directory" error.Spelling out the entire full path works, like so:

Code:
include_once("/srv/www/mysite/global/library.php");

But this type of code is no good as I may change servers in the future. I have my "DocumentRoot" set correctly in my sites-available file. It seems as if PHP is ignoring it. Is there a config file someplace (htaccess? Local php.ini?) where I should update my root directory for this site only? Or am I following bad form and there's a better way to do this? Relative paths don't seem like the answer here though...

Ubuntu :: Admin / Root Rights Login To Edit And Read Files

Feb 12, 2011

I'm a new Ubuntu user and a Python programmer, it's the first time that I use Python in Ubuntu so it's a bit confusing me. If I want to save a Module or something in a specified map, I get 'Errno 13', it says that I don't have permission to edit, do thing in that map. And this is also for importing files with Python. I logged in from Terminal with 'sudo -i' and closed Terminal, but the problem keeps repeating. How do I login as Admin or Root and stay as Admin or Root? I need right to edit/read files as well as root and normal user.

An example:
Python file:
test.py ->
test = open('/a.txt', 'w')
test.write('Test - Test - Test')
test.close

When I execute this, I get in the Python IDLE the 'Errno 13' problem and below the 'Errno 13' it says that I don't have permission. Who know how to stay logged in as root, even if the user has not logged in or isn't this possible, if it isn't then I just want to get files moving, editing/erasing etc.

Server :: Apache Does Not Have Permission To Modify Files In User Directory - SVN

Mar 30, 2010

I recently started using SVN with Apache for my web development, although I find it really annoying that I have to issue two SVN commands (one local, one remote) to update my web site. I have been looking into SVN post-commit hooks to solve this problem. The only problem is that apache does not have permission to modify files in my user directory... So here is how everything is setup. I am running Slackware 13 full install. There have been no installations overriding any of the default installs.

Now I'm unable to run any command whatsoever as root, ls,vi,cnf whatever, they don't work.

However the commands work as normal user.

I can guess that the files with root ownership in the home folder were deleted but I would like to revert everything back to normal and would like to know how to solve this problem.

OpenSUSE Network :: Setup An Apache Server On Computer Which Will Allow Browsing Of Files In A Specific Directory And Subdirectories?

Jun 13, 2011

I'm trying to setup an Apache server on my computer which will allow browsing of files in a specific directory and subdirectories, without needing any sort of authentication.

I've got the Apache2 server up and running through yast, and everything works fine as long as I try to point it to the /www/htdocs folder. However, I want to point it at another folder, which is on another partition. This partition is formatted as NTFS, if that matters at all (here's some background on some permissions issues I had with the NTFS partitions recently).

When I change the "Directory" setting in the Yast http server configuration utility to the directory on the NTFS partition I wish to use, attempting to access the server results in the following error:

Code: Access Forbidden: You don't have permission to access the requested directory. There is either no index document or the directory is read-protected. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

Ubuntu :: UNR 10.10 - Change To The Root Directory In The Files And Folders?

Oct 13, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for over 5 years. This time I decided to upgrade UNR to the latest 10.10. I am now running it from USB to try it before installing. Excuse my ignorance, but whatever happened to the Terminal? I cannot find it anywhere! I think this release is not going in the right direction if one of the most important tools in Ubuntu is hidden from an average user.

Also, how do I change to the root directory in the files and folders? or at least to the higher directory structure.I won't be installing UNR 10.10 unless I figure out these BASIC things.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot The 10.10 - Mounting /dev On /root/dev Failed: No Such File Or Directory

Feb 9, 2011

After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 I have had some problems booting my Ubuntu. It all started when restarting after the upgrade, and I got the error;

Code:

mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting / sys/ on root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or dirctory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.
No init found. Try passing init= boot arg

BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3.1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash)(initramfs) After searching the Internet, I found a "solution". I just had to boot with a USB stick with the Ubuntu Rescue Remix (the normal Ubuntu USB won't boot either), and i wrote;

Code:

sudo fsck /dev/sdb5

Now I could start my Ubuntu again. So whats the problem? If I turn off my computer the normal way, there is no problem, but if I log off, put it into sleep mode, if something happens and I have to turn it off with the button it goes back to the first problem, and I have to reboot it with the USB stick and fix it all over again! If I don't have the USB stick with me, I probably wont be able to use my laptop!

General :: Find All Files Starting With A String Lsnr* Under Root Directory

Oct 31, 2010

I am looking for Windows Search equivalent looking for file name patterns (not file contents but file names)....

I am aware of "globbing" and wildcard recursive search functionality in ls but I am still not capable of finding files under directories.

for example: I want to find all files starting with a string lsnr* under root directory / and any sub-directories.....

ie I want to look for files like lsnr*.* anywhere under / and any sub-directories under / such as /dir1/dir2/dir4 and dir1/other/dir/someotherdir/sub-dir etc.

so if I have /dir1/lsnrcontrol and also have /dir1/dir/2/dir3/lsnr-tinit.dat then I want to list the files names etc.

how to do this using ls -R and wildcards.

Fedora :: F11 Apache 403 Forbidden Using Alias Directory?

Nov 20, 2009

I have searched the forum high and low for the solution with no success, so I will now post this problem, with all known facts. Linux (and Fedora) is brand new to me so I'm somewhat illiterate with the language and recommendations from reading other threads. Please bare with me. I'm reading the book Beginning PHP and MySQL from Novice to Professional by Cristian Darie.The book has you create an Alias directory for creating the tshirtshop web-based application.

The book uses the directory /home/username/tshirtshop. However, I did not want this in the /home directory, so I created a new directory from the root directory /workspace/tshirtshop. Below are the areas of interest in the file httpd.conf (I restarted the httpd service each time I edited this file):

Code:
DocumentRoot "/var/www/html"
<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
</Directory>

Fedora Servers :: Apache Says User Directory 'Not Found'

Feb 2, 2009

I have FC10 newly installed, and Apache is serving content from /var/www/ okay.

I'm trying to get Apache to serve web content from user's home directories. This is what I've tried with no success:

Uncommented 'UserDir public_htm' in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and commented out 'UserDir disabled'.

And...

Uncommented user directory section in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. It now reads as follows:
#
# Control access to UserDir directories. The following is an example
# for a site where these directories are restricted to read-only.
#

[Code].....

I also tried setenforce 0 to temporarily disable SELinux until the next reboot. No luck. It doesn't appear to be an SELinux issue.

That's as far as the information available will take me. I still get URL 'Not Found' when I try to access http://192.168.0.2/~myusername/

setting up user home directory web access?
