I have a Fedora Core 8 Machine and have two identical network cards in it, two 4 port GigE NICs, PCI-Express. They use E1000E drivers. One card is working while the other identical card is not. Linux can see all 8 ports are visible with dmesg | grep pcie.I suspect the drivers on the second card have not been loaded. How would I load the drivers?

With nearly all Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Linux Mint being the exceptions), my system never seems to recognize that my laptop even has a wireless card attached to it. That is, when I run "lspci" the wireless card doesn't even show up on the list like it does with Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint. This narrows my options when it comes to choosing a distro to install on my computer. I can't seem to find instructions as to how I can make my wireless card work. I assume it needs a driver. I managed to find the driver, I think, in the form of a .tar.gz file. The card is a Realtek Semiconductor, RTL 8191SEvB Wireless Lan Controller (rev 10).

I'm trying to install the drivers for my nvidia graphics card. I downloaded the shell script from the nvidia website. However, there's something peculiar going on. When I execute the shell script it says it cannot find my kernel headers, yet I can verify that my /usr/include/linux/kernel.h does exist. I have selinux on, but just installed os with it on, so contexts are fresh. Checked them as well. After doing some research I found something out. When I run a 'uname -a' I get this.
Code:
Linux ariel 2.6.18-194.el5PAE #1 SMP Fri Apr 2 15:37:44 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Yet when I ran 'yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers' they installed the following versions.
Code:
kernel-headers-2.6.18-238.12.1.el5.i386
kernel-devel-2.6.18-238.12.1.el5.i686
Shouldn't they be
[Code]...
I see that the error in the nvidia shell script can't locate the header files for the RUNNING kernel version which makes sense. Why would yum install that version instead of the one in 'uname -a'? Or am I misunderstanding something?

I have a torrentbox. The special thing about this torrent box is that it's custom built, it has Windows 7 installed and I have full control over it using TightVNC. At the moment I'm using uTorrent WebUI and FTP do download the files. But I'm thinking - When I download a 1,5 hour long video in 30 minutes, wouldn't it be theoretically possible to just WATCH the movie directly from the torrentbox? Obviously this can't be dont using FTP since it makes you download the entire file, BUT:
Is there some other way to fool your OS into thinking that this is a local folder, and get media players like VLC or GOM player to play video files directly? This would be a monumental time- and space saver for me.(I have both Windows and Linux Mint on my PCs)

i have a little experience with ubuntu but i have had bugs that are not resolvable at this time in ubuntu. so instead of giving wild bill back my pc i am looking for a new distro. my concerns with ubuntu revolve around acpi. no fan control and high temp. the 2nd problem that is almost overlookable is the ata1 softreset error. it usually is no problem but occasionally have to do manual fsck to fix. so heres my laptop specs. toshiba a305d-s6848. amd turion x2 ati x1250 integrated. 3gb ram. 500gb hd vista and ubuntu 9.04 dual boot grub with 100gb ubuntu and the rest vista. so q1= what suse version would be best?
q2= is suse's acpi better? ubuntu runs all features but fan control
q3= is suse as easy to install? or harder
q4= ati graphics i know for my card went to legacy what version still has the ati drivers for my card
q5= is suse easier or harder to work with and get everything working.
i know no linux is or opsys is perfect. im just looking for one that is stable and works the pc correctly. i know its a big thing to ask. i know no one can tell me that. but just looking for suggestions. im thinking of downloading suse and does all the downloads support live sessions.

I recently bought a pair of Leadtek Winfast DTV Dongle Golds for use in a xbmc/tvheadend based htpc. I'm trying to use the remote, but It appears it is outputting keyboard presses. It also repeats the button presses, as if you were holding down the button on a keyboard, until you press another button (which will do the same), or if you press something on the actual keyboard.
The first issue isn't as mch of a problem, as I can configure xbmc to use it, but the second problem makes it completely unusable. Also, when trying to watch certain channels such as one hd or ten (australian freeview), I get the error "descrambler unavailable".

I'm currently using a Leadtek Winfast PVR2000 capture card with a webcam connected via the composite port. I'm attempting to get the video working with a motion daemon. I used to have the identical setup under Debian and everything worked out of the box. I'm now trying to get this working under Ubuntu 10.10 Server.
When I first boot up the PC, it works great. Randomly (anywhere between 1 and 10 days) I stop getting video. If I kill all motion instances and relaunch it, I'm only able to get a solid green output. I've tried killing off every motion instance again and used other command line apps that just end up giving me a solid black image. After a reboot everything begins working again.
It's not a huge deal if the video feed dies once and a while, but is there any way to avoid rebooting the whole PC? Is there any way to figure out why the capture card can't be accessed after the video feed dies?

I tried converting wma to mp3 with vlc, but an error comes up this is what it says.
p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }
Streaming / Transcoding failed:
It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder:
MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3.
Either how can I get that encoder for vlc or what else can I use to convert wma to mp3?

I'm trying to convert a video in .ogm format to .avi format so I can stream it to my PS3 via uShare. I'm using Mencoder and the following command to do it (to transcode the audio from vorbis to mp3 and the video from mpeg4 to xvid):
Code: mencoder input.ogm -oac mp3lame -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1 -o output.avi.The only problem is, the video contains 2 audio streams - one Japanese and one English. Needless to say, I need the English one. The above command only seems to transcode the Japanese audio though! Here's what ffmpeg has to say about the input file:
Code:
Input #0, ogg, from 'input.ogm':
Duration: 00:24:16.12, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 1280 kb/s[code]...
what I can do to specify the correct audio stream to encode? Also, how can I keep the bitrate the same as the output.avi seems to default to 96kbps?I'm not sure which audio stream is which but a little trial and error will sort that out in no time.

Can't find anything quite like this having been asked already I have just bought all of Babylon 5, and want to put it on my hdd instead of using the discs. dvd::rip works fine for me. I can rip and then transcode titles to AVI manually. What I want is to rip a disc or two, and then have dvd::rip transcode them overnight (takes about 50 minutes per episode on my machine). I tried this on the command line: dvdrip -f transcode -t 2 b5s1d1.rip which, after briefly loading the GUI, just gets this error: Can't locate object method "error_dialog" via package "Video:VDRip::GUI::Main" at /usr/share/perl5/Video/DVDRip/GUI/Main.pm line 173. Gave up and found dvd::ripqueue, which is a gui utility that automates what I would have put into a script, but it doesn't work properly - dvd::rip launches, but only performs the first pass and produces no output. My projects were set up and saved correctly (as I said, all this works if I start it manually from the dvd::rip GUI).

What's the easiest software to use (simplest command) that will read a VIDEO_TS folder (a ripped DVD) and transcode it? I don't want a GUI. mencoder looks like my best bet, but I just wanted to check before I start transcoding all my DVDs with it. Also, auto-cropping would be a great feature, but I don't think mencoder can do this unless you find this out prior to the transcode with mplayer.

I am trying to install the drivers for the Advantech PCI 1761 relay card, and annoyingly, I have to compile them from the source, since Advantech doesn't offer preset drivers for any form of linux beside RedHat and Debian. I have two .ko files
advdrv_core.ko
pci1761.ko
the first one is required for all advantech cards, the second one is specific to my relay card. I installed the first module fine by using:
sudo insmod advdrv_core.ko
but when I do:
sudo insmod pci1761.ko
I get the following errors:
[14192.558039] pci1761: Unknown symbol adv_process_info_check_event
[14192.558236] pci1761: no symbol version for advdrv_unregister_driver
theses are actually only two, there are like 100 sets of unknown symbol errors. The strange thing is that the first .ko file, advdrv.ko, references the same symbols, yet it installed fine. What Gives? Any ideas? I really need this module to get installed. These drivers were updated March 10th, 2010.

The commandcvlc --run-time 180 "http://amber.streamguys.com:4500/wcvehd1.m3u" --sout file/ogg:/home/mikeb/Audio_Recordings/WCVE-test"$(date +%F-%T)".oggwill successfully record a stream from my local NPR station. If I understand the messages thatare printed to stdout when I run it, this transcodes the mp3 stream to an ogg filece I am using this to timeshift a program that I otherwise would not be able to listen to, I would prefer simply to dump the stream in mp3 format without transcoding. tried changing "ogg" "dump" but that produces an error about the --sout option. Can someone tell me how to modify this command so that it simply dumps the incoming stream to a file in mp3 format
