This happens (3x) everytime I setup it for the first time, re:detection of hardware,network, creation of a new user, etc. Although my GRUB is working perfectly.

View 13 Replies View RelatedA client has sent me an RHEL 5.1 box for me to do some work on, but it's not registered with Red Hat. This is causing me problems, because it's a minimal installation, and I need some more dev software.My immediate reaction was to install various bits (emacs, and so on) from my Centos 5(.0) DVD.The base RHEL system only had one (disabled) repo entry,so I added a yum DVD repo entry in yum.conf.d.
This looked good to start with, but it doesn't work. Something in RHEL's pirut/yum/rpm/whatever is getting confused, and can't work out what is/isn't installed.
Question - how do you maintain an unregistered RHEL box? Has RH done something to make life difficult? Is my problem simply that I'm using a Centos 5.0 DVD, instead of Centos 5.1? Am I stuck with downloading lots of rpms from the net and doing everything manually? I really don't want to do that.

I'm working on a RHEL 6 base image for virtualization and I'm trying to pare down the things that we don't need. Considering none of the virtual servers will have wireless networking, I figured it'd be good to kill that wpa_supplicant process. even with the wpa_supplicant service off, NetworkManager seems to start it right back up. There isn't any wireless devices configured, so I don't know why it does this. I can't even kill the process, it starts back up immediately. Is there something in either the Network Manager or wpa_supplicant config files that would disable it permanently?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAnyway, according to the release notes, RHEL 6 has a PAE enabled kernel by default. Great... But that leaves me wondering why uname report SMP. Further, I'm provisioning some systems for QA use, and they're asking that PAE is disabled. My thinking is that since RHEL 6 requires PAE capability to install, there may be no way to disable it and the googling I've done seems to support this. tl;dr Why does a default kernel with PAE enabled report SMP on RHEL 6?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am running Zimbra 5.0.2 with ClamAV and I need to upgrade clam anti virus. It's for a Centos 5.4, Dell PE 2950 machine. On their Wiki for upgrades at [URL]. They recommended either of the Red hat versions - Redhat 5.x 32-bit or the Redhat 5.x 64-bit. Are there any known problems using either of these two versions on my Centos machine? Also, want to make sure, I am assuming I need the 32 bit version, is this correct? I am asking because in the past I have learned sometimes it's better to not go with the RH versions on Centos, can't remember where I heard that, so I want to make sure before I do the install.

documentation on the "stable" war-horse OSs. I am impressed for example on the community support of Ubuntu, Slackware, and impressed by the formal documentation of Arch and Gentoo.
1. However, how does the documentation of CentOS/RHEL compare to some of the other distros? and
2. How about compared to similar OSs, like Debian

i've configured the machine to use a static ip yet dhclient still runs and obtains an ip. what needs to be done to stop this? it has to be something i can put in a script since i have written a setup script to run on several machines. this setup script creates/modifies several files with a few key ones shown below:
/etc/sysconfig/network
Quote:
HOSTNAME=csec7154
NETWORKING=yes
NISDOMAIN=csma
NTPSERVERARGS=iburst
[code]....
and the files, hosts, resolv.conf, network and ifcfg-eth0 in the /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default directory all link to their respective files as does /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0. thanx!
