View 2 RepliesI have one RHEL server which is placed near a corner of the server room. Few people are using this server to watch movies and unwanted photos. I want to disable access to CD ROM. disabling the eject button of the drive wont work, as they used pin to force open the drive tray. Can I delete the cd rom drivers from the hard disk so that no CD will be detected ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a RHEL 6 base image for virtualization and I'm trying to pare down the things that we don't need. Considering none of the virtual servers will have wireless networking, I figured it'd be good to kill that wpa_supplicant process. even with the wpa_supplicant service off, NetworkManager seems to start it right back up. There isn't any wireless devices configured, so I don't know why it does this. I can't even kill the process, it starts back up immediately. Is there something in either the Network Manager or wpa_supplicant config files that would disable it permanently?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAnyway, according to the release notes, RHEL 6 has a PAE enabled kernel by default. Great... But that leaves me wondering why uname report SMP. Further, I'm provisioning some systems for QA use, and they're asking that PAE is disabled. My thinking is that since RHEL 6 requires PAE capability to install, there may be no way to disable it and the googling I've done seems to support this. tl;dr Why does a default kernel with PAE enabled report SMP on RHEL 6?
View 7 Replies View Relatedi've configured the machine to use a static ip yet dhclient still runs and obtains an ip. what needs to be done to stop this? it has to be something i can put in a script since i have written a setup script to run on several machines. this setup script creates/modifies several files with a few key ones shown below:
/etc/sysconfig/network
Quote:
HOSTNAME=csec7154
NETWORKING=yes
NISDOMAIN=csma
NTPSERVERARGS=iburst
[code]....
and the files, hosts, resolv.conf, network and ifcfg-eth0 in the /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default directory all link to their respective files as does /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0. thanx!
i want to disable all DHCP request, can i turn off the client that if a MAC address changes a dhcp request is not automatically made?reason for this: I have HP blade running with an Intel NC260M mezzanine card running with virtual connect. I have experienced problems with firmware levels with this card where the virtual connect mac address is ignored and the real MAC displayed. As we are using bonds on the servers and have 6 NICs installed we have to tie down the MAC address to a bond. A blade was replaced today without the firmware update and the real MAC appeared, a dhcp request was made and my-eth[2-3] and resolv.conf files were over-written by the dhcp supplied

View 1 Replies View RelatedA client has sent me an RHEL 5.1 box for me to do some work on, but it's not registered with Red Hat. This is causing me problems, because it's a minimal installation, and I need some more dev software.My immediate reaction was to install various bits (emacs, and so on) from my Centos 5(.0) DVD.The base RHEL system only had one (disabled) repo entry,so I added a yum DVD repo entry in yum.conf.d.
This looked good to start with, but it doesn't work. Something in RHEL's pirut/yum/rpm/whatever is getting confused, and can't work out what is/isn't installed.
Question - how do you maintain an unregistered RHEL box? Has RH done something to make life difficult? Is my problem simply that I'm using a Centos 5.0 DVD, instead of Centos 5.1? Am I stuck with downloading lots of rpms from the net and doing everything manually? I really don't want to do that.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

View 3 Replies View RelatedEnvironment:RHEL 5.2 and 5.4 AP x86_64, 2 drives (sda, sdb), installing without optional features like clustering and virtualization. I have tried this for a couple of days now and just can't get it to work. My goal is to take the RHEL 5.2 DVD and RHEL 5.4 DVD and install them on separate drives of the same machine. I want the grub menu to give me a choice. I prefer to understand the steps and choices offered me by the install dialog to do this rather than fiddle with grub.conf. If that is not possible, I will write up the bug.
So far, I just get the the error 13 when trying to start the grub added second OS. I have read elsewhere that "Anaconda frequently recognizes the other operating system and sets up grub so you can boot from either operating system". That would be nice. The install dialog lets me choose a drive to install to. I have figured out that I need to check "review and modify partitioning layout" to enter the advanced grub choices. Do I have it install a boot loader for the 1st OS? Trying to add the 1st OS during the second OS install creates a grub conf with no kernel line in the added boot stanza.
I am new to RHEL. I am trying to get into VNC viewer but i am unable to do so.
I have 2 issues.
1. How do i see other desktops using vnc from RHEL.
2. How do i access RHEL using vnc from other desktops.
For the 2nd point i have done the steps what ever i could find i.e,
- Putting a passwd for the vnc server
-addding ports from 5900-5904
-editing the xorg.conf file
-restarting the machine.
I did get a successful connection from a windows machine into the RHEL server but then the server hangs and keyboard does not work so i have to restart it.
I am getting errors when I try to install any package on my RHEL 5.3 linux box. I've previously installed mc(midnight commander) using yum but recently it started failing.
I've inserted a log of a session below.
[root@anjanb ~]# yum install multitail
