General :: How To Make Commands In Mathematica 8 Use All Cores

Jul 26, 2011

Many commands in Mathematica 8 (Integrate, Simplify, etc.) seem to only be using a single core on my system. Is there any way I can change the affinity so that it utilizes all cores for computations?

Software :: Alias Make To Automatically Use Multiple Cores?

Jan 27, 2010

Newbie question here. I just realized that I can tell make to use multiple cores to compile by doing PHP Code:makewhich is just awesome on a quad core with hyperthreading (I just compiled 2.6.33-rc5 in under 5 minutes!) I know aliases are possible, though I've never had much need. What I would like to know now, is if it would be safe to alias make to mean PHP Code:so that by default I use 6 of the procesors when building or if there would be occasions that compiling on multiple processors would be a bad thing

General :: No Sound In Mathematica 8.0.1?

Jun 11, 2011

I have a huge set of events in Mathematica that I need to react to, and it's not practical always checking for it, especially since events are randomly distributed in time.So I wanted to add a simple sound to remind me to go check the event. I wanted to use Beep[] but I get no results, in fact, I didn't realize till now that mathematica is making no sounds whatsoever.I use Debian Squeeze Stable and have no trouble with any other application using sound.

General :: Does Running Commands Verbosely Make Them Slower

Jul 20, 2011

I've found myself using the -v flag for lots of applications less and less (especially for trivial stuff like tar and cp). However, when I did and I was, say, unzipping a large file, it would take longer than when I didn't use the -v flag.I assume this is because the terminal has to process the text and I'm filling up whatever buffer it might have. But my question is, does this make the application actually run slower or does it complete in the same amount of time and what I'm seeing is the terminal trying to catch up?

General :: Find Which HT-cores Are Sharing A Physical Core From /proc/cpuinfo

Sep 2, 2011

There is a computer with two "Xeon(R) CPU X5550 @ 2.67GHz" CPU. The Hyper-threading is enabled, so it looks like 16-core system, but really there is only 8 physical cores.

I know that when hyperthreading is enabled, each physical core is splitted into two virtual cores. I want to know, which pair of virtual cores shares a physical core and which are not. Or, how (in what order) will Linux enumerate HT-cores comparing to real cores. (enumerating is done for sched_setaffinity and taskset masks).

I have a dump of /proc/cpuinfo file from the system.

I think there are possible:

CPU0-CPU7 are not sharing phys. core. CPU8-CPU15 too. But sharing is in pairs CPU0+CPU8, CPU(i)+CPU(i+8) and so on. or CPU0+CPU1 are from single physical, CPU2+CPU3, CPU(2*i)+CPU(2*i+1). or exotic CPU0+CPU15 sharing, CPU1+CPU14 ... or random?

The hard moment in this case is that there are 2 physical dies of CPU (two sockets), and usual recommendation of using "physical id:" field can't help

The cpuinfo:

processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 26
model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5550 @ 2.67GHz

Sometimes, and only sometimes, the screen goes to the error in the attached picture, stays there for about 5 seconds, brings me to the login screen. When I log in again, all of my applications that were running, open folders, and my terminal windows are closed.

Slackware :: Make Special Keys Run Commands Without X?

Jun 6, 2010

I'm installing Slackware 13.1 on a Samsung N150 netbook and am stuck trying to make the special keys do their normal functions when using a virtual terminal, that is not under X. Under X + Xfce it can be done via Menu->Settings->Keyboard->"Application Shortcuts".

In essence the question is how to make a special key (example Fn+Up to increase screen brightness) run a command in the background.

Changed title and text to make clear that the command should not run in a virtual terminal but while the display is being used for a virtual terminal, that is after Ctrl+Alt+F2 for example.

OpenSUSE Install :: Commands Make System Boot To Grub Shell Instead Of Grub Menu?

Apr 17, 2010

I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Code:
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.

If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 262 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 263 13316 104856255 83 Linux
