I want to host 5 websites on my new virtual server so I have created 2 nameservers that point to my virtual server's IP addresses as a glue record. What confuses me is when I create a new domain on my server it gives the new domain it's own nameservers (ns1.thenewdomain.co.uk etc) do I need to change these records so they use the nameservers I created earlier? If I do? Which particular records should I change? I'm running a Unix virtual server with a Plesk control panel.

In the office there is a local network with samba+openldap PDC. The local domain name is company.net. The company desided to create a corporate Website on a remote hosting and desided that the site's domain should be company.net which is same as local network's domain name. So now it is not possible to reach that corporate website from within the company's local network because, as I guess, bind9 which is installed on above menioned PDC looks for company.net on a local webserver. Is there a possibility to let people from this local network browse the remote site?

I am trying to create a new domain on an Ubuntu server version. the man page tells me to type
[URL]
When I do this it tells me that the command CREATE is not recognized. I realize (and hope) that this is probably extremely simple but can anyone help me with this? To give an idea of what I am trying to do. I am a network technician and I work with a Windows Server 2003 network. I am trying to create a separate domain for our training classes with linux to reduce costs. I still want to connect to the internet through our existing domain. I have all of the computers connected to the internet and set up including this server but I have not been able to get the server to become a name server so I can change the domain on all of the linux computers that I set up to have them on a separate domain.

I am currently interning at a place and my job is to essentially learn UNIX. My supervisor gives me problems here and there to help guide me with my learning but for the most part I'm doing this all by self-teaching myself. Needless to say I have run into a few obstacles...for instance-Create a *one* line command that, using tar, will collect the full /usr/local directory (you need to run this as root again) and copy the whole /usr/local structure under /optFor example /usr/local/bin/hello will become /opt/local/bin/hello, etc. I want this as follows:1. /usr/local is collected by tar, but the output of this tar command is its stdout.. what you get from the previous stdout, you compress with gzip and send it to stdout again 3. get this output and decompress with gzip.. get this output and pipe to tar in a way that will extract the tree under /opt.If anyone knows how I could go about doing this, please let me know, or at the very least point me in the right direction. What I've got so far (which could be completely wrong) is:tar cvf - usr/local/ | gzip -c - | gunzip -c - | tar xvf -in theory I feel like this should work (except for extracting the tree under /opt...i'm kinda stuck there)

I would like to know if it is possible (and, if so, how I would go about doing so) to temporarily limit my Internet connection on a Linux box.
I am developing some new features for one of my Web sites, and I want to see how it performs when using a slower Internet connection. Although it's great for most aspects of my job to have a lightning-fast connection (around 25000-30000 kbps download and 20000-25000 kbps upload speeds), it really makes it difficult to know even what average users might experience when using some of the aspects of our Web site.
I have Linux Mint installed in VirtualBox on my computer, and I'd like to find some way to potentially temporarily "trick" that installation into using a much slower connection to the Internet for testing purposes.

Is there anyway we can add a local domain alias so that if we enter [url] in the browser it would point to [url]
In Windows XP I used to do it by editing the "hosts" file from the following directory

I'm working with a dual-boot laptop running Ubuntu 10.0/Windows 7 and a Debian 5 VPS while the OS's shouldn't have much impact on my question.
What I would like to do is create a html page that I can upload to my VPS which lists all of the files/folders on my local 2TB hard drive (Specifically media such as Movies, Music, TV Shows...). The media obviously will not reside on the server, but I would like to at least have a list which will allow me to select, for instance, a bands artist so that it redirects me to the albums in the directory below.
Ultimately, I'm looking for Open Directory Browsing without actually having the media on my server. I have been attempting to create something to this effect using lynx, however, I'm not sure if it can be done with this command or if it's even possible for that matter.

Backround:
I'll have 2 routers:
- ADSL-router (D-link DSL-2640U)
+ NAT on (needed as one static IP from ISP)
+ Server's IP as 192.168.X.xxx
+ router firewall port-forwards set for needed ports (21,22, 80 etc) to 192.168.0.xxx - 2nd LAN-router
[Code]....
Is there any setting/file on Debian-user-machine, where I could fix that abc.mydomainXYZ.com/defg is always in something to do with 192.168.X.xxx

I used Likewise (specifically, likewise-open-gui) to add my computer to the Windows domain at work. I can log into the computer with my domain credentials.
Until I reboot.
If the computer ever shuts down fully, I get an authentication failure when I log in using the domain account. But if I log in using a local account and run likewise-open-gui again from there, everything works. I don't have to rejoin the domain, only launch the program, close it, and log out of the local account. This seems to allow me to log into the domain afterward.
Is there something in specific that I can add to my startup scripts that will connect me to the domain before login?

Have a domain registered on a public ip. The domain server for the domain is on the same local network as the web server that uses the domain. The web server naturally has a local and public ip address.
The problem is that whenever I try to access the domain from my local network the lookup for the domain fails, as it cannot find the server from the local network. What's the most painless solution to this problem?
TL;DR: need for my domain to be accessible from both my local network and the outside world, now it's only from the outside which is a problem.

I'm trying to set up a *simple* MTA in my local network. The only thing it should be able to do is send system / daemon mails to admin@mylocaldomain. but at the moment I'm pretty much overwhelmed by everything i *should* know in order to set up this MTA
my infrastructure:
- servers:
* test01.mylocaldomain --> should send mails (with exim) to admin@mylocaldomain
* dns01.mylocaldomain --> dns-server
* mail.mylocaldomain --> mail-server (postfix / iredmail package)
I configured exim to be in "internet"-mode. now i have a variety of errors I can choose from (and a variety of solutions that i don't like ).. my test is always an email from test01.mylocaldomain:
echo "Hello World" | mail -s Testmail admin@mylocaldomain
- after running the config, i get the error: admin@mylocaldomain: all relevant MX records point to non-existent hosts --> google says, edit and udpate update-exim4.conf.conf --> dc_relay_domains='mylocaldomain' --> but this exim installation should not be a relay at all. it should only be able to SEND (to this domain), not deliver it. or do i get something wrong?
- after i added dc_relay_domains='mylocaldomain', i get --> SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<admin@mylocaldomain>: host mail.mylocaldomain [192.168.x.x]: 550 5.1.1 <root@mylocaldomain>: Sender address rejected: User unknown in virtual mailbox table --> but i don't want to create an account on the mailserver for the SENDER...
- ...so i thought, i'd config exim with the domain "test01.mylocaldomain" (including the server name), so that the sender is clearly from another domain than the mail server handles (e.g. user@test01.mylocaldomain).. but then i get this --> SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<admin@mylocaldomain>: host mail.mylocaldomain [192.168.x.x]: 450 4.1.8 <root@test01.mylocaldomain>: Sender address rejected: Domain not found
I really just wanna send mails in my local network.

Allow me to access local copy of site that's on computer (located : /var/www/developmentsitename/) using www.development.loc in browser./and2a. What do I edit to create the server accessible by other computers connected to same wifi connection. 2b. If another computer can connect to this site now, can we create a virtual desktop setting in which workers can work as if they have their own partition on the server to work on and upload work onto the development server.

ever since upgrading from karmic to lucid, i cannot ping fqdn hosts in .local tlds. nslookup & dig work, but most other utilities fail (ping, traceroute, etc...). i know .local is an invalid tld, but apple seems to have made it a defacto standard on private networks, so i'd imagine somebody else has seen this issue before... is there a simple fix that doesn't require managing hosts file entries on a bunch of systems?

Armed with only this info; is there a way to recreate the previous domain so the users and machine accounts could recognize it?

I have QPopper and Sendmail setup on a Red Hat server, they both seem to be running ok and listening on usual pop and smtp ports 25 and 110.
QPopper is running through xinetd and the config file is as follows
Code:
service pop3
{
disable = no
flags = REUSE
socket_type = stream
wait = no
[Code].....
The problem is I get an error in the maillogs when trying to send mail from a PC on our local domain about the canonical client name which is to do with reverse dns. I understand this can be turned off at runtime of qpopper but nowhere seems to detail how to do this, apart from -R flag at runtime but as it is running through Xinetd I am not sure where to put it.
A few more details on the problem, if I VPN onto our network from my home desktop I can send mail fine. Receiving mail is also no problem, it is just sending. I have setup only our local domain in the access file for sendmail.

I want to use single label host names on my local LAN, without using any domain (at least no registered one). My machines should be named in a fashion similar to 'myserver', 'mydesktop' etc. so that i from a browser on any LAN machine may write 'http://myserver', and get the webserver on 'myserver' (so NO domain part, e.g. myserver.domain).
Do i need to create a DNS zone for each host or is there a way to put all host in a single zone, if so; which? Would such a name be considered a root domain?

I have public IP and registered domain mydomain.eu. On domain provider DNS servers, mydomain.eu points to my machine called solis (10.10.10.1; this is gateway, dhcp and dns server; eth0 is outsite, eth1 inside my network). I have also laptop which is connected to eth1 through wireless AP. From laptop and solis I have access to outside and inside network without problems. Of course my dream is to have access to solis from local network using name 'mydomain.eu' but not fully name 'solis.mydomain.eu'.
