General :: Copy To A New Directory And Rename With Date Stamp

Newbie 1st post here. Trying to find the most efficient way to copy a file to a different directory and rename it with a date stamp extension. Looking to accomplish this with one command if possible.
File = make_file
Full path /home/user1/bin/scripts/make_file
would like to move to the following directory /home/user1/bin/scripts/archive/
I'm trying to find out how to use command substitution along with the date command that when I copy the file to the archive directory it gets renamed with a time stamp extension. It should look something like "make_page_12:00:00-24-10-2010" I've tried a few different combinations using the cp and mv commands but can't seem to get it to work the way I want to.

In the Windows world where I came from, Irfanview freeware easily renamed a large folder of JPEG photos by EXIF time & date stamps, appending a unique number if the time and date stamps were the same. Is there an equivalent rename-by-EXIF information batch command in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid? For example, change (based solely on EXIF information): FROM:DSC_0001.JPG TO:20110224_09:34:56am.JPG

Create a copy of the file above and call it commands.sorted. Use the vi command to manually sort this file. I.e. use yy to copy a line, P or p to paste a line, and dd delete a line. Order the commands with the two lines starting with double quotes first. Then list the rest of the command in alphabetical order.
Anyone have any ideas what he's talking about? Can I copy a file and rename it at the same time while copying it to the same exact directory again? Now sure what the two lines things means either. I have an email out to him but it usually takes a long time for him to answer me. I got alot of work to do so everytime I get hung up it kills me.

I am trying to rename multiple files in a directory and add the Date/Time stamp to the file name.
Example:
file1.txt
file2.txt
file3.txt
Renamed to
2009_02_01_21.txt
2009_02_02_21.txt
2009_02_03_21.txt
I am able to accomplish this using this command:
mv file1.txt "`date +%Y_%m%d_%H`".txt
But I want to automate this task, I have many files to process and I dont want to do them one by one.
I already tried this but it does not work
mv *.txt "`date +%Y_%m%d_%H`".txt

I have a mess in my photos folder; I want to sort them according to date in EXIF information and rename according to the date (like 001.jpg, 002.jpg and so on).
How can I do this in Linux? I have used ImageMagick for some basic bulk processing tasks before (converting and resizing, etc), is it possible to use it for this task?

I've been trying to use the stamp function in pdftk. I'm trying to stamp a pdf document with a pdf I generate on the fly that contains the current date. Below is what I have so far. The problem is that pdftk says "Error: failed to open stamp PDF file". the file is in the same dir as execution, I've made it 776, I've specified full paths... nothing seems to work. I've even tried the "prompt" option and specify it manually but I get the same behavior. This is pdftk version 1.4.

I have a list of .jpg files from two cellphones that I would like to rename to the file creation date... but so far I can't seem to find a suitable script (or anything remotely close to what I need).
These are jpg's snapped on cellphone cameras, so no EXIF data exists.

I'm looking for some help for renaming files that contain a sequential number. The files are spoken word radio programs that have a sequential program number. I want to have a date in the file name ie. Pgm 3028 Abcxyz 2010-01-18.mp3. Here's a catch, the program only air Mon-Fri, yet I want all the programs to play in sequenceDoes anyone know of a script out there that can do this? I don't have programming knowledge to do myself.

Sequentially number files based on date modified (rename cli)
I'm almost done a larger script which takes all the pictures in a folder, converts it to video, and emails it to me. Everything worked fine until I realized the picture filenames weren't always starting at 1, then ffmpeg chokes.
I have a bunch of files in a folder which I need to rename to:
I don't want to install any additional packages and I'd like this to run in a single command if possible.
If not possible, then a bash script would work too.

I'm currently running Meerkat beta AMD64. I've been using Audacious in Ubuntu for years, before that I used XMMS.
In Windoze I used to use Winamp. Winamp has a plugin called gen_yar. Gen_yar would allow you to right-click on the playlist and copy your current playlist files in track order to any folder on your hard drive, or to a USB mounted mp3 player/thumb drive, whatever.
It had several checkboxes in the settings.
1) Rename the files adding the track number as the prefix (01_, 02_, etc).
2) Create a .m3u playlist of the tracks in that new folder using #EXTINF: instead of the full path. That way I can copy that folder to any gadget or another computer and the playlist will still play those files.

I have yet to see this feature in any Linux media software. I've tried just about all of them. The only thing close would be drag-n-drop playlist files from Rhythmbox.
Does anybody know of a plugin for Audacious or Rhythmbox that will do this?
Alternatively, is there a Nautilus script that when I right click on a folder full of mp3s, it will create a playlist of files in that folder, and save that playlist file inside the folder (without the full paths as mentioned above)?
I hate having to boot into Virtual Box just to use Winamp to create portable playlists.

I am using my media server as my podcast collector. I am in the process of learning the ins and outs of NFS so i can mount a NFS directory and transfer my podcasts from server to player. For now i am using scp to transfer podcasts from server to desktop then to player. The problem is the path to the directory of one of the podcasts is /home/user/gpodder-downloads/The BILL&TIMMY Show Podcast.
whenever i try and run my scp command it fails because it thinks that TIMMY is a script i want to run in the background. I have tried to back-slash escape the character, i've tried single quoting and double quoting the character and i still get the same problem. as it sits now i have to move all podcasts to another directory and then transfer them to my desktop...but i would like to transfer the podcasts without un-necessary steps.

I moved to Mac OS X recently and bumped into the "feature" of Mac where copying files from an external drive resets the file modification/update date/timestamp to the current date (which Windows does not), causing a disaster for my 10+ years of backup work files where date is important. So, before I learned how to avoid that (e.g. using the -p "preserve" flag in the "cp" copy command) I have in the meantime added to my new Mac hard drive many more files as well as updating existing old files.
I have a backup external hard drive with all my old data and proper modification dates. I have a Mac hard drive with reset modification file dates (a single or two particular days). The Mac hard drive has all the "true" and "current" file contents with files modified and added. I need to Copy all the original files from the external harddrive, preserving file metadata (really only modified date), but ONLY overriding the new internal Mac hard drive IF
The file contents (md5 or whatever) is the same or The file was updated after the day (which of course I can see on all files) on which the original disasterous cope was performed (implying the file is new or modified) Ensure the copy leaves all the new and modified files completely intact on the Mac internal hard drive. "No prompting/stopping of the copy of any kind (i.e., not verbose) is required but is o.k". "Recursive copy - obviously I would like to copy all* files folders and subfolders found in export".

I would like to copy the contents of a directory into another. I don't want to copy the directory and all files and directories under it, but just the contents of the directory just as if it were a regular file. Doing cp -r target dest copies the directory and the entire hierarchy rooted in it. I get error if I do not include the -r option. (I am calling cp from within a C program.)

Is there a way to copy a directory (retaining the permissions and owners) without copying the contents of the directory?
If there is no such thing... then I need a way to determine if a target path is a file or a directory, and if it is a directory I need to make a new directory elsewhere that has the same name, owner and permissions.
Basically, I'm trying write a script to copy 200 GB of files over a network to a new server, and I'd like to do it by generating a list with the find command. That way, I can migrate large chunks of the files over the course of a week, and on the day of the migration generate a new list of files that changed in the last week and then copy just the chagned files over minimizing the down time. However, the list will contain directories that I can't just use the 'cp' command on because it will copy all the contents of the directory.
